The farm focus is on sustainability and building resilient community. We steward medicinal plants, shiitake mushrooms, vegies & tree fruits, ducks & geese, solar home & solar business, intentional community, and permaculture design. We are working on healing our spot on the planet, right here, right now.

We are a small, family-run homestead, in the beautiful Appalachian foothills of rural Alabama, located in a 40+ year old co-operative intentional community on eighty acres of beautiful central Alabama earth.

Our intentional community’s land consists of meadow, woods, creek and pond, and several family “holdings” for intentional community members. That pond is a 3-acre cold-spring-fed pond (think swimming, boating, fishing). We have diverse creative homes (underground, yurts, solar, all hand-crafted) and enjoy beautiful hiking to the local close-by river. Our intentional community has recently opened to welcoming new members. If you are also interested in intentional communites . . . then all the more better!

Other intentional communities and extended ‘tribe’ (what we call our friends) live close by. We have created a good life here and gather together for WorkPlay Days, Game Nights, music jams, pot-lucks, movie nights, talent shows, parties, book groups, volleyball, fermenting, contra-dancing, tai chi, and protecting our local river. It’s not just a dream, it's not just possible … we are all working on making a better world NOW!

We have plenty of plants growing and construction projects, and harvesting & processing medicinal herbs in our new tincture press, and site mapping, inventorying of trees, shrubs, herbs, and other permaculture oriented activities to keep us, and you, busy.

Room and board and instruction, is in exchange for 4 to 5 hours a day of help, with a couple days off for every 5 you have been here. The rest is your time. Potential duties: planting, weeding & cultivating, watering, harvesting, processing, earth moving, a variety of construction projects, and duck & geese care. While we are part of an intentional community, the farm itself is just ours, so expect to spend some-to-a-lot of your time working alone or in pairs.

Some gardening, farming, or building experience is appreciated, but it is not required, for the right person. Do bring your desire to learn and your positive attitude and we are good! We are a safe opportunity for newbies, as we are definitely, and always will be, learners ourselves. We love to learn from you, we all have something to share!

We have enjoyed the many volunteers that have made it to our little haven and sat at the table with us. We've been hosting guests consistently since 2008.

We expect you to be positive, a hard worker, a self-starter, and a person of great honesty and high integrity, who honors your commitments. NO drugs and absolutely *no smoking* is allowed indoors or outdoors. Due to our work with vegetables and medicinal plants, many of which are susceptible to tobacco mosaic virus (transmitted by smokers via skin-to-plant contact), this farm is a strictly non-smoking environment.

Accommodation depends on how long you will be with us. Long term guests usually reside in a separate apartment in our solar basement with lots of windows, a wood stove and fans, a double bed, sink with hot and cold running water, small fridge, an attached mini-greenhouse, and Wi-Fi. (It's the latter part of December, and we still have tasty little tomatoes growing in the micro-greenhouse, yu-um!). Installing a toilet and shower for the apartment may be a project you work on. A dining table, cookware and dishes are provided, and in the winter, it is easy to cook on the wood stove. We'll teach you how. Our solar cooker works year-round, anytime the sun is shining.

Short term guests are welcomed for a minimum stay of 2 weeks to a few weeks, depending upon the skills you have and our needs at the time. With mutual agreement, and space available, you may be able to stay longer. Please contact us a minimum of 2 weeks in advance, so that we may check your references. Short term guests might room in our home, in a camper, or in a tent you bring.

At the moment, everyone shares the toilet and shower with us on the main level (though not at the same time, LOL!). Board is included from vegan to clean-food omnivore. Expect to share in cooking meals, washing dishes, and light clean-up duties in the house.

We met at The New Alchemy Institute on Cape Cod, MA. We are both graduates of Permaculture Design courses and hold PDCs and one of us is a graduate of Earth Activist Training (EAT ’06). We also run a solar (PV & Hot water) and energy efficiency business. One of us is an RN (nurse).

We speak English y hablamos un poco de espanol con nuestros amigos y vecinos, suficiente por conversando sobre las cosas importante de la vida.

Opportunities to learn about solar and to participate in our Intentional Community, as a guest, are possible. You must be comfortable and loving with children & dogs. We have many pets here so we cannot welcome your pets. We are LGBTQ friendly.

For all volunteers, references, a detailed application, a medical history form, and a thorough interview process are required. It is the agreement we have made with our intentional community so that we can welcome guests here.

We look forward to hearing from you~!

    Daryl and Sara

Helping process medicinal plants into tinctures, teas, salves, etc. Helping build a composting toilet. Helping label plants. Helping identify both problem and helpful insects. Helping paint signs to educate folks touring here. At the moment, we are adding on an extra room, so folks who are handy with tools and construction are encouraged to apply.

Contra-dances, art and other types of museums, music venues, theaters, and more, and train, plane & bus stations are in large cities 1 hour south & 1 hour north of us. There are many beautiful places to hike nearby and within a couple hours drive. Since we are so rural, having a car works best, though folks in our community can occasionally help car-free folk get around. An occasional guest has taken advantage of the bicycles here.
