Please note that from 7 November until end of January 2023 the facility will be run with a skeleton team as I am going to the UK to visit my Mother
I will be looking for volunteers to help from February next year if anyone wants to book ahead
    Cheers, Tony

    FREE accommodation, 2 cabins available,
Both have water supply, at the moment one has a shower but we are working on separate shower for other cabin
    Cooking facilities in both cabins

I am looking (quite keenly)for volunteers (single or couple) to help out with a backlog of mostly small tasks for maintenance of our centre. Anyone want to come and work with Flying Foxes? (preferable with a rabies/vaccination) is more than welcome

We are a self funded center for rescue and care of native animals - we specialize in Flying Foxes so you have to be vaccinated (rabies at least) to be allowed officially to handle the animals. (PLEASE NOTE: The vaccination thing is NOT compulsory - read the whole profile if you want to understand us before you think about applying. As a general recommendation anyone traveling to SE Asia, for any extended period of time, should be vaccinated against Rabies (la Rage en Francais) - NOT Rabbits! Check the UK Government Rabies Recommended Page { })

The rainforest is a difficult environment, it is for the adventurous. Please – we only ask for resilient people who are ‘into’ the environment and wildlife. It does require commitment, compassion and a sense-of-humour – EVERY DAY!
If spiders cause you grief, we have some big ones, look up Golden Orb Weaver.
Also we get visited by pythons, (mostly Amethystine) and they have to be caught and then relocated (how’s your python wrestling?)

PS: Please like cleaning (sweeping and washing down floors) – our animals need care and a clean environment, Flying Foxes are meticulously clean.
We are a strictly non-smoking property and ABSOLUTELY NO DRUGS.
NO DOGS - we have resident Cassowaries.
There is VERY limited mobile phone coverage

Occasionally we have had problems with mosquitoes (which goes with living in a rainforest):
1: we DO NOT allow chemical/insecticide based insect repellent spays
2: we recommend local non-chemical repellents, eg: Moov
3: We provide citronella lamps for use OUTSIDE the cabin
4: We now recommend Sandalwood sticks to repel mosquitoes around the cabin, so bring some with you if you react badly to mosquito bites
5: When necessary we fog using natural insect controls

We have had people with breathing and other problems from Mosquito Coils.
I can refer people to research papers if you are interested
    and this comment as well:
"Not many people know about it, but the damage done to your lungs by one mosquito coil is equivalent to the damage done by 100 cigarettes."

We are also aware that some volunteers have tried to use us as free accommodation, for next to no help please note that if we suspect this to be happening, you will be politely asked to leave

Living and working with Native Wildlife on 45ac (18hc) of rainforest. Animals in care (mostly Flying Foxes) and rescuing injured animals in the wild. Local wildlife include two Cassowary (1 Female, 1 Juvenile Male), Tree Kangaroos at night (sometimes) as well as Bandicoots and Antechinus (look them up!!)
We also get the odd python visiting which we trap and release - pythons are after the Flying Foxes and scare the bejaysus out of them.

Anyone who is vaccinated against rabies will be able to experience working with the Fruit Bats (aka Flying Foxes). This is a State Government requirement. If you are not vaccinated you are not officially allowed to handle the Flying Foxes but you can still experience being with them.
We are also members of the Wildlife Lands Trust of HSI.

Mainly help in cleaning the wildlife cages in the mornings, chopping up fruit (approx 1.5hrs )and in the afternoon filling putting out food buckets(approx 30-45 mins).
If willing, we also like help in regular maintenance, We have recently replaced a veranda due to shoddy work by the builders. Softwood timber supports were used instead of hardwood and the veranda was collapsing, it was (still is after my repairs) the main entrance to the rescue cages. Some other areas inside the cages need some attention as well

    Unterkunft

Two separate detached cabins, one with 2xqueen sized single, other with Queen double bed Both cabins with deck into forest, hot water shower, cooking facilities (single gas burner soon to be double gas burner)' Shared use of composting private visitors toilet' We DO NOT provide meals - due to our financial status - I am retired and on a pension. The second cabin is now available but shower facilities are shared with our first cabin.

Any excess monies goes to buying food and medicines for the animals.

If you see 'mice/rats in the cabin they are Antechinus (Native Marsupials) that help to keep down unwanted insects.

Wi-Fi Internet is available at the cabin with unlimited access between 3pm and 6pm, some limited access in the evenings dependent on demand. The reason for this is because our service provider has 'over sold' the local exchange and download/upload is compromised.
Mossman is about 30kms south of us and we travel in most Tuesdays for shopping. We often go in on Saturday to visit the local markets. The nearest general store is Wonga Service Station about 15 minutes (not including ferry crossing and wait times) south of the Daintree Ferry and another local store about 12kms north of us but are a little more expensive

In general, there is a frantic hour or so to clean cages in the morning (around 8:30am) and chop fruit - plus about 45mins in the late afternoon (5pm-ish) filling and distributing feeding bowls. We can always work around this if someone wants to do a day excursion or whatever. We really appreciate people coming here who are truly interested in the animals - it also makes their life [the animals] more interesting meeting new people.

Otherwise the day is yours unless you want to help with the regular maintenance and upkeep of the facilities: there is always plenty to do and we really appreciate the help.

If you have a medical condition that may require attention please note that we are REMOTE. It takes a minimum of 45mins for an ambulance to attend our property (when the weather is good). We do, however, have a local nursing station.

If you are not 'self-driving' there is a regular return bus service from Cairns to Cooktown which drops off at the Daintree Ferry about 15 minutes from us, we can pick you up (This service operates with a 4WD vehicle each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Cairns to Cooktown and returns the same day from Cooktown to Cairns). The service is run by Trans-North and costs a bit less than the tourist buses that come up from Cairns. Ask us about contact details for Trans-North
