Farris permaculture farm has 500 meter boardering lake Farris. The lake offers possibilities for swimming/showering, kayaking, fishing, as well as ice-fishing and ice scating during winter. This lake is the drinking water lake for Larvik, and is also sold in mineral water bottles in the shops. The hundred year old farmhouse pumps its water from the lake, without filtration.
The property is large, mostly forest as well as 7.000 m3 over 3 areas to build 3 food forests of which one will become a nut forest. Food forest1 I started last summer, will become more or less 'ready' by October. Food forest2 and 3 will be started a little this autumn. The house is old. A lot has to be repaired, 'modernised' or painted. I especially need help this summer with the buildings.
The farm is about 120 km southwest of Oslo. Norway being 3.000 km in length and 750 km in width, so 120 km from Oslo means close to Oslo.
If necessary you can do here the second part of your quarantene, from day 4 after entering Norway, with your own toilet, kitchen etc.
Your host, Annette, 62. I am from the Netherlands and have been living in Norway since 1998. At the age of 39 I moved to Norway, where I worked as a strawberry picker one summer when I was 20.
Settling down on this small farm after having traveled the world, from the mountains in Ecuador, Cuba, Jamaica, Costa Rica to Laos, Cambodia, Nepal and Tibet, helping out on a reforestation project for Oerang Oetans in Borneo, etc. I have met many different cultures over many years. And I am interested in meeting you too. Looking forward in having many interesting conversations with you.
It is only one year ago, in June, that I moved to this small farm. Since then I prioritised my dream having a permaculture food forest. Besides green fingers I am a social, spontaneous, musical, ’sportive’ and early-retired clinical psychologist. I am retired because of Thyroid disease. Beside psychology I also studied medicine and natural medicine. In my head I am still young, but my body sometimes tells me different. I have low thyroid disease, which makes that I gradually get more energy from 11.00 and so less energy again from 15.00/19.00 hours, depending on how much energy I use in the afternoon. I probably will work several hours in the foodforest every (late) afternoon, do projects in my house or paint my house. On the one day a week I go to treatment and do all the shopping I can come home very tired, but one hour on my coach will make me socially and sometimes even active again.
I choose to rely on my immune system and herbal medicine and be unvaccinated.
With the possibility to have solar panels on the garage, my place will most probably be mostly off grid from 2022. But for starters the guest house and guest boatare will be off grid; first using portable solar lights and from summer 2022 using solar panels.
Today there are 6 free ranging White Sussex chickens, one of them a rooster named Anna. Maybe next year also a Yorkshire terrier and a cat on the farm, to protect the chickens and fruit trees and to get rid of mice.
You appreciate being ’at the end of the world’, in a very quiet and silent place, only hearing birds or the cock singing. You are a handy man or woman with at least some experience in that you are interested doing. You are able to work on your own, but I will give you an extra hand when needed. Sometimes we will work together. You have no problem to be the only workawayer on the farm, or two persons in case of a couple. While working you enjoy the view over lake Farris towards far away mountains. You like to go for a swim or snorkling, go walking or cycling (my bicycle need some small repairment first), go kayakking, go fishing (gear available). You maybe are interested in learning to cook on a fire. You are flexible and are not afraid to come with solutions where I maybe don’t see them. You are a non smoker and not addicted to the internet or want to experience doing without/less for a while.
This maybe is not the place for people who are used to, or like to have, a lot of people around them.
Vaccinated persons must be willing to wear gloves inside my house as well as wearing a mask.
You can enter Norway when you come from a country that is green on this map: fhi.no/en/op/novel-coronavirus-facts-advice/facts-and-general-advice/entry-quarantine-travel-covid19/#map-of-nordic-region-europe-with-status-for-entry-quarantine
Map updates early Mondays. Countries turn green if they have few new covid cases.
For coloured areas within Norway:
In case you come from an area which requires quarantine, you can do your quarantine on the farm.
You will have your own place to stay, toilet, kitchen, shower in the lake or have an outside hot water bucket shower.
Kvelde is part of Larvik municipality and has 2.000 inhabitants. It has one supermarket, 8 km away.
On school days a mini bus is running from Kvelde along the farm, in connection with the bus to and from Larvik (first bus 07.00 and last bus leaving 15.00).
Last bus leaving Larvik train station to Kvelde around 17.00, monday/friday. Make sure you are arriving in time on the Torp/Sandefjord airport to take the train to Larvik train station to catch the bus. I can send you links for busses, trains or find you the exact times. Just ask me.
With my 2-seater I can pick up one person from the bus stop at Kvelde church. Because of diseases spreading these days I do not want a long time drive pickup; sorry. I look forward offering all kinds of pickups again in the future.

You will be able to learn about permaculture, living off-grid in the guesthouse or boat, farm life and smell the Norwegian (and me Dutch/Netherlands) culture.
I can help you practice English, Norwegian or Dutch.
We can practise Qigong together with lake view.
If you are interested I can teach you about medical herbs and making tinctures, to make soap, green shampoo, or making cheese (without the use of milk), making rice milk, almond milk on your free day.
I hope to learn from you too!
I have several instruments (bongo, piano, flute, guitar, clarinet, violin, Cretan lute) so maybe we can make some music together too, but I myself need notes to play from.
Projects this summer:
Placing rain gutters along the barn and some on the cabin.
Building a chicken night area in the big chicken barn.
Building a rainwater outdoor shower.
Making a cabled fiberglass internet connection to the guesthouse, for wifi.
Closing all the holes and around windows in the boat with TEC7.
Cutting 8m+ trees with a motor saw.
Cutting cutted trees in pieces by motor saw (electric/gassoline).
Chopping fire wood with a wood cutter machine.
Cutting branches with a wood chipper machine.
Transporting wood chips or soil to foodforest1.
Building net protection around the fruittrees in foodforest1; 1 m2 around each one and 35 cm into the soil.
Building a small greenhouse and outside area for quarantining the chickens away from wild birds in case of chicken /wildbird influensa.
Making a little chicken door and installing chicken entrance.
Open the chicken coop between 07.00 and 08.00, until automated doors are in place.
Scraping old paint and painting front side of the big barn.
Painting some outside doors.
Building a passive watering system for foodforest1.
Hammering a new roof cover over the water pump house, with some insulating as well.
If necessary cutting lower branches of the forest boarder by hand. Cleaning the boarder for high grasses to protect the chickens from predators.
Slaughtering the excessive 5 months old cocks, before they start killing each other when becoming fertile.
Inside the house projects:
Installing a nonelectric ventilation channel in the bath room.
Installing a tap on the water pipes going to the barn, to empty the water before winter.
Building a small wall with a lot of glass between living room and staircase.
Barricading mouse holes to stop mice from entering; inside and outside.
Replacing kitchen tap.

If you want I can help you become better in speaking English, Norwegian or Dutch.
You will stay in the guest house, only a few meters from the water. When the guest house would be rented out, then you will stay in the boat. You will clean after yourself before leaving. You are also welcome to put up your tent or hammock somewhere.
There is an outside kitchen, camp fire place, your own private compost bucket toilet system, your own coffee/water cooker corner with a roof with possibility for electric charging/cooking/baking and a shared fridge just around the corner inside the barn. Water you collect directly from the lake. There are several outdoor eating areas as well as one outside eating area with a roof.
In case of cold autumn weather you can borrow a big size insulation suit to wear in the evening sitting outside.
Meals: All food will be taken care of. We will share lunch, dinner, coffee and tea breaks. We can eat dinner cooked by me or you, served at 13.00 hours or cooked by you served at 18-19 hours. (As it is normal that we always have to make our own meals, cooking is not counted as work.)
We can share our evenings too. Maybe overlooking the lake, the midsummernight sun or sitting around the fire.
Internet: You will have excess to Fiberglass internet on the main house terrace as well as the dinner place with a roof. Your phone/wifi will only work in this remote area on a few places on the farm. Because of the fact that there is almost no signal for mobile phones here your phone will be radiating a lot. Because I am radiation sensitive I prefer you to have your phone on airplane mode when not using your phone. Plan is to lay a fiberglass cable to the cabin, from where if will give wifi.
You have the possibility to help 5(x5hrs) days with 2 days off, or 4(x6hrs) days a week and so travel 3 days. Or maybe you want to help 10 days and so travel 4 days. Many possibilities we can discuss. Or if you prefer you can work 3 days - 1 day off - work 2 days - 1 day off and repeat. It is also possible to go kayakking in the morning and work in the afternoon and early evening now that it is light the whole night.
Right from the farm you can go kayaking, cycling, fishing or go on a few days hike, camping wild. So take a small tent or hammock with you if you would like to do this.
People visiting Norway come to enjoy nature, not so much culture. Musea in Norway are only open a few weeks a year. There are some very nice different kinds of open air concerts in Larvik, Sandefjord and Tonsberg during summer. In Larvik there are also indoor concerts, 1 pub with concerts and free use of the library.
The train in Larvik is 30 km, a 35 minutes drive, away. The nearest airport (Oslo) Torp in Sandefjord, 42 km. Tonsberg, 55 km, has a Viking festival. To Geilo it takes minimal 7 hours.

Smaller types of campers can be placed near the boat, having a very nice view.
When your dog is used to free ranging chickens, then no problem. Otherwise your dog has to be on a long leach while on the farm. In Norway from April until September 15 it is obliged to keep your dog on a leach while walking your dog in nature and elsewhere. We can put up a long 'chain' between 2 buildings for the leach to run on. And of course we can try to learn your dog to get used to chickens, so it can go free too.
