We are a small hobby farm located on Haida Gwaii and surrounded by ocean and beautiful forest.
We have chickens, ducks, and goats right now. Our farm produces vegetables, eggs, fruit, and meats (poultry, pork and goat) we also milk goats to make cheese and yogurt.
Being in such a remote location and with storms often disrupting food supplies to our island we are learning to be as self sufficient as possible and produce as much food as we can, currently eggs, poultry, pork, goat meat, vegetables, apples, berries, wines, cheeses, soaps and jelly. Harvesting wild foods is also an interest for us and we are always processing and preserving what is in season.
We are Alaska milling wood on our property to make our own planks for decks on on the house, cedar shelving for the living room and beams for a new barn and greenhouse.
Due to an old injury, I needef a hip replacement and had surgery in February but should be well into recovery by mid April and I would be happy to teach you whatever you would like to learn. We are still growing vegetables, making kombucha, yogurt, hummus, cookies, sauerkraut, wines and what ever else we set out minds to.
Daily volunteers will be milking goats, collecting eggs, watering and feeding chickens, weekly you would be cleaning out the chicken and goat houses, usually there will be weeding in the garden or moving compost to the fields. There may be help needed with building projects such as fencing and a new greenhouse. We also may ask you to help with local Elders that need help in their gardens due to handicaps or age related illness that has made their gardens unusable. Usually there are precious food sources for the island that are shared by the Elders when they are able to access fruit trees and bushes and they really need our help. I am also a vendor and a volunteer at three of the island farmers markets and I will ask if you can come out to help with setting up events such as the Tlell Fall Fair in July/ August or the Seedy Saturday in the spring! For your help you will receive room and board and also I will pay for your food and treats at the events and entrance fees. You will learn how to make cheese, yogurt, soap, jelly, meat, wines, and what ever else we are making "in-season". Ask what we are up to and what you will learn during your visit as this changes depending on the season. We are making cheese daily but we only butcher in the fall, etc. (We put 2 goats in the freezer in September and 2 pigs in April last year.)
We accept volunteers year round and are happy to exchange room and board for help on our farm and the chance to meet new friends!

Travelers will learn about wild harvesting, gardening and learning how to be self-sufficient on our farm as well as helping with whatever is being made seasonally such as wines, preserves and soap.
On-island there is a rich, living Haida Culture as the Natives revive their language in a never before written form.
You could help us outside with the chickens, washing eggs, working in the garden/field, assist with whatever building project is on the go and chopping firewood. Any inside help is always appreciated for those who prefer inside work with cooking, cleaning, organizing and jelly, kombucha, wine, soap and cheese making.
