Dear Workawayers,

my name is Natalie and we have a family-run camping near Gandia, in the Valencian region of Spain.

We live and work on the premises and are looking for a person who loves to spend time with children and would be interested to come and stay with us and helping my young son Marcos with his English homework and practice speaking with him in English (he is 6 years old and goes to a British school). Marcos is very sociable and fun-loving! In exchange, we offer a studio with your own kitchen and bathroom plus one meal/day. This accommodation is available only during the low-season period (mid-September to the beginning of June).

During the high-season (July/August to mid-September) our restaurant is open and you would also have the opportunity to earn a small allowance by doing some small tasks such as helping us in the restaurant (you would not need to write down orders, simply taking out the plates to the tables and occasional cleaning).

We have had many great people staying with us over the past few years and got the pleasure to learn new cultures and languages. So here we are once again excited to see who shall be our next guest!

Depending on the period: we would ask for help with looking after my young son Marcos for 3 or 4 hours per day and helping him with his English skills. I'm flexible with the working hours for Marcos, since it depends when he sleeps or when I work.

And/or help with tasks here at the camping (waiting table, etc.)

We have a comfortable accomodation available (with kitchen and bathroom) where you would live alone.

We live in Xeraco beach, 5 minutes by car from the train station (3km). Xeraco beach is a small coastal town, very lively in the summer season, where you can enjoy restaurants, beach bars and above all one of the best beaches in the Valencian Community.

Our campsite has direct access to the beach! :)

Xeraco also has a mountain, the Montduber, where you can go hiking all year round.

We know he sometimes finds it difficult to get himself to concentrate but he tries so hard and he usually gets there. In between, we had interesting chats about football and his You Tube channel!
He is a smart guy and we know he can do it. We look forward to hearing about the outcome of the mock exams as well as the final exams in May! Wir drücken dir ganz doll die Daumen Ivan!
We also enjoyed the entertaining visits of cute little Marcos in our bungalow to pick up an orange, a Fanta or just join us at breakfast when he was not at school.
Big Ivan was always at hand if there was any sort of a practical problem......& we really enjoyed Natalie’s paella, fideua, frequent high quality coffees & our chats with her.
Ximo who works at the campsite is also always helpful and good company.
For other workawayers.... be aware that the campsite is in a beach resort, Xeraco Playa, which is very quiet out of season. From September to May, there are 3 buses a day from Xeraco Playa to Xeraco town & Gandia & although Xeraco town has a station with direct trains to Valencia, it is a considerable distance from the campsite. You’ll need the bus or a lift to get to it.
There’s a supermarket within walking distance where you can buy your basics, & Mario’s pincho bar next door to the campsite (Lizarran) gives you the opportunity to have a few beers with the locals and some decent tapas. There is a cafe by the supermarket and a Chinese restaurant that is open all year round....but that is it in the winter. And of course there is the beach....which had changing faces whilst we were there.....
With the help of the bus timetable we managed to explore Gandia and Valencia a lot and got to like both, but tended to stay a night or two as it made planning easier and you got a better impression of the places.
The countryside around is amazing, especially the hills, but there is no way of accessing it without your own transport- we hired a car to give us the opportunity to explore. And it was certainly worth it....there is a good network of walks and lots of caves (especially the cova del rull!) and (ruined) castles.
We taught a little and learned a lot during our time at the campsite....thanks to everybody.

He helped Ivan… read more prepare for a Biology exam scheduled for the day after we left and we were thrilled when Natalie messaged about how well he did. My son Linton (2 almost 3) loved playing with their happy and lively son Marcos, who had his 2nd birthday during our stay. (Such a gorgeous cheeky grin and laugh.) Young Ivan was also very kind towards our son, often entertaining him with his skateboarding skills after his studies.

Xeraco Playa is a lovely place. We stayed in a private bungalow at Natalie’s camping ground, which has a gorgeous beach right on the doorstep. We visited outside the busy tourist season of Jul/Aug, when there are less people and less things happening at Xeraco Playa. (It’s a small place and many of the cafés, restaurants and other local businesses only open in the busy months). We prefer a more peaceful and laid back life, so this suited us perfectly. If you love the sound of relaxing on a quiet, beautiful beach while contemplating your navel, this is the perfect place for you!

We also enjoyed a weekend in fabulous Valencia (a 50 min train ride from Xeraco station) and a day in Gandia (a 10 min train ride away). The old town of Gandia is lovely to walk around (and Ducal Palace is well worth a visit).

Natalie and Ivan – thank you once again for a great stay and please give your boys a big hug from us. Linton still regularly mentions his holiday in Spain and playing with Marcos, so even though they may have clashed occasionally (as toddlers always will) he clearly had a ball.

Some tips for fellow workawayers… If you’re considering tutoring but not sure where you’d begin, rest assured Ivan has excellent text books based on the school curriculum to support his studies. You will need to have good English language skills and be confident in understanding a range of academic subjects (in English) up to mid high school level. We enjoyed the freedom and privacy of the bungalow – with basic features (including a private bathroom and small kitchenette) but all we needed. There’s free wifi at the site – not accessible from all the bungalows but you can always use it from the main reception and bar/restaurant area. The campground itself has a bar and restaurant (and a good coffee machine). Outside Jul/Aug there are a limited number of local businesses open, but there was a good pinchos (tapas) bar open a 1 minute walk away. There’s a small supermarket 10 mins walk away, where you can get everything you need day to day. If you have access to transport, there’s a slightly bigger supermarket in Xeraco 5 mins drive away and major brand supermarkets in Gandia. Local buses to Xeraco and Gandia only run in the peak summer months, so bear in mind that if you visit outside this time without your own transport you may feel a little isolated. However, Natalie does have bicycles you can lend (which could be used to travel to Xeraco or Gandia) and some campsite visitors kindly offered us lifts when going into town. The town of Xeraco has a station with trains to Valencia and Gandia, and there is a local taxi service. We found we coped without our own transport but we’d ideally bring our car if we return for another workaway. This is simply further information intended to help other workawayers decide if this is the right experience for them. We had a truly wonderful time with Natalie and her family, and would readily return.
