Beschreibung
Our Animal Rescue and Shelter is a volunteer based organization saving hundreds of abused, neglected, and injured cats and dogs a year. You can read more about our mission and organization on our website elrefugiocostaballena.com! Our shelter is located in the beautiful town of Uvita, Costa Rica, where the jungle meets the Pacific Ocean. In fact, the provided housing is only a 5-minute walk to Parque Nacional Marino Ballena, famous for the humpback whales that frequent our waters! Note: while there is a fee to enter the nearest beach, which is part of the national park, there are other free beaches nearby that you can access by bike (provided to you by the shelter). The wildlife in the area is stunning. It is common to see monkeys, toucans, and scarlet macaws in the vicinity of the shelter. Ours is a small shelter, often having between 3-6 dogs on site and 25 cats all being cared for to prepare them for their forever homes! We take pride in being a part of saving animals and working closely with the surrounding communities to educate about humane treatment, provide free care, free Spay/Neuter Clinics, and emergency financial assistance at our local Veterinarian Hospital.

Costa Rica has such a wonderful culture filled with nature, friendly people, and amazing adventure! While here, you can learn the Spanish language, enjoy typical meals at local restaurants called "sodas," hike along the beach, while appreciating all the wildlife, and speak to/educate the community about animal rescue. You will also gain experience in a shelter, working with animals that may be under intensive care, ideal for those with a desire to pursue careers veterinary care.
We have people at the shelter from Costa Rica, who would be delighted to share their passion and love for their country with you!Arbeit
We are looking for passionate volunteers, ideally with experience caring for cats and dogs in poor health or with unexpected behaviors. This is work to help abused and neglected dogs/cats. We do not require any specific skills from our volunteers, but give preference to those with some experience. You will receive training on the animals in our care upon arrival. Volunteers will be asked to work 5 DAYS A WEEK with a 4-5 hour-a-day commitment for AT LEAST 4 WEEKS, ideally longer. These hours will be split between morning shifts (8 AM - 11 AM), a long lunch break, and an afternoon shift (3 PM - 5 PM) with two days off per week. An ideal volunteer will be caring, enjoy teamwork, love animals, and want to immerse themselves in all the things Costa Rica has to offer.

A fully contained air-conditioned studio apartment is available for a SINGLE VOLUNTEER, COUPLES, or TWO CLOSE FRIENDS. It is on-site at our shelter and provides furniture, two single beds, bathroom/shower, all cookware, kitchenette, and washing machine. Volunteers will have their own private kitchenette for cooking. Food in Costa Rica is reasonably-priced (but not exactly cheap) and the local markets always have local and fresh varieties.
If you are a single traveler, we won't be pairing you with anyone due to limited space, so be advised you will be ALONE on-site. However, we are available to you whenever necessary and the Shelter Director within moments of the shelter. Was noch ...
On your time off, enjoy the beautiful beaches of Uvita, Dominical, and Ojochal (short bus rides away), hike in the jungles to a waterfall, go to weekend markets, enjoy food from around the world, try ziplining, visit Alturas Animal Sanctuary (wild animal rehab facility), and Reserva Playa Tortuga (famous for their sea turtle conservation projects - something you can get involved with while in the area) and of course, go out on a local boat and see the humpback whales that frequent our warm waters to give birth!

Besides the chores like feeding, giving medicine, walking the dogs and doing the laundry, a big part of the job is spending time with the animals. So you should really like dogs and cats. As a live-in you live right next to the cats. I liked that… read more
