Greetings to all the travelers who want to know other places and ways of living in the world!
My name is Maria. 60 years ago I came to this beautiful planet. I love nature and people.
I have been volunteering for 21 years and the experience has always been very pleasant; Since at the moment, I cannot travel the world, let the world come to La Encina! Volunteering is a bit like traveling!
Whoever visits La Encina come prepared with a sleeping bag if possible, normally we will go camping and hiking through beautiful places in the land of Don Quixote! And if it is summer we will go to the placid rivers and lagoons to swim and camp for a few days next to the coolness of the water and the leafy trees.

La Encina, the place where I live and to which I invite you, is located 4 km from Carrion de Calatrava in the province of Ciudad Real, Community of Castilla la Mancha. It is the land of Don Quixote. Land of olive trees, vineyards, Mediterranean forests and scrubland, with many rivers and lagoons. Cú, a cute white cat shares the space with me. Twice a year my lovely children and grandchildren usually visit me, they live far away; sometimes I also receive a pleasant visit from some friends. Sometimes on the farm there are bnb tenants.

In the garden there are fruit trees, olive and almond trees; also recreational areas with shade trees and ornamental plants. I love growing a small garden for self-sufficiency. I usually use permaculture, although I am not a professional in this form of cultivation if I put into practice what is important to me, such as growing long-lasting plants, such as artichokes, Brussels sprouts; and plants that self-sow, such as parsley, chard, calendula, etc. It is also important to respect the cycle of the plants, for this reason I do not start the summer ones until a few days before the first frost; I don't till the land either unless it's very necessary, sometimes years go by without tilling and always without going deeper than 10cm. sometimes some biodynamic agriculture, but it will always be an organic and healthy garden. I love that volunteers bring their experience and creativity as well.
Here in November you will pick olives by hand, tactfully chipping the branch. Generally they pick them up by sweeping or with machines that vibrate the olive trunk, but both ways seem very aggressive to me. We will collect the almonds in October, we will prepare the soil in spring and autumn and we will sow. In summer water and clear brush too, feed the chickens and collect their eggs. chop branches from the prunings and organize them in boxes and firewood. We will do maintenance work throughout the year, although they will generally be easy and pleasant.
We can collect aromatic and medicinal plants when we go hiking if you are interested in it and if it is the season.
I have done a lot of personal work. I have worked for 10 years with Krisnhamurti's teachings, deepening and learning to live according to his philosophy of life. I studied psychotherapy. Sometimes I do self-knowledge workshops.
I have done a lot of yoga. Now I practice it less, but it will be a pleasure to practice together, as well as meditation and deep dialogue, although I don't spend energy arguing.
I love to laugh and listen to live music although I don't play any instrument professionally, sometimes I practice with the djembe and the organ, for pure pleasure since I don't know anything about music theory.
I love walking, cycling, when the weather and work allow it; camping near rivers and lagoons and in forests. Because walking through nature is my passion.
Cheer up! The land of Don Quixote is the great unknown but it is also very beautiful and bucolic.

With the practice in the orchard and garden, together with the observation of Nature that has shown me so much, I have learned a lot. The relationship with everything alive in the field has been my greatest school.. ; The spring, summer, and fall orchards are lush and somewhat wild; and supplies us with the consumption of vegetables and aromatics. The entire area is very visited by birds: sparrows, goldfinches, tits, swallows, owls, scops owls, magpies, blackbirds, woodpeckers, raptors, nightjars, bee-eaters, yellowtails, hoopoe and others that I don't know their names but I really enjoy their presence. I increasingly feel the call to walk longer. A very beautiful time to live in this part of the earth is autumn, its pleasant temperature and the diversity of colors make these months something very special in this landscape. Spring too, of course? It is another very beautiful time to share in this climate. Although the summer is hot, it is pleasant to go camping by the river and take a dip when the heat hits. The house is kept at a good temperature and there are fans. At this time of year we do our work during cool hours, which there are, ha ha. In winter, the heat from the firewood is very comfortable and the environment warm. Your help will be welcome at any time of the year. winter is cold du

During the night and in the morning, temperatures usually rise to 12/14 degrees at noon, when it is very pleasant to ride a bike along the many trails in the area.
What can you learn here? I love creating almost always improvised dishes in the kitchen, although simple; I like to learn recipes from different parts of the world. Regarding sustainability, I can teach you how to knit a sweater, sewing, natural soaps, we can speak with knowledge about almost everything.
We will especially work on self-knowledge and spirituality on a day-to-day basis since it is my forte and the work of awakening consciousness.
I prefer to receive volunteers who have at least basic knowledge of the Spanish language. Since my English is very poor and misunderstandings are often created if we cannot communicate verbally.

He hecho mucho trabajo personal. Estudie psicoterapia. A veces hago talleres de auto-conocimiento.
He hecho mucho yoga.

Here in summer it is hot: up to 35º during the day, in those cases we work during the cool morning, about three or four hours, which may or may not be divided into morning and afternoon. The work is light.
In La Encina volunteers normally work 4 hours a day and free one day a week, but it is also possible to work 5 hours and free 2 days.
An activity that I usually do with the volunteers are outings to beautiful natural sites and free camping. We also do cycling or short bike rides. In the summer we go to lakes and rivers.
The food is ovo-dairy vegetarian. In general my menu is austere; but when there are volunteers I try to adapt to them, always within what I can afford. I am respectful of life so I do not tolerate wastefulness or bad eating habits.
BUS SCHEDULES TO GET TO Carrion De Calatrava, the closest town to La Encina. You should look at the bus company AISA. They leave from Madrid South Station. I pick you up in Carrion de Calatrava. If you come by Ave to CIudad Real capital, you can take a bus to Carrion. And sometimes I can pick you up directly at the Renfe station in Ciudad Real.
