Beschreibung
Hear the call from Central America!
Nestled in the mountains of central Honduras is Minas de Oro, a municipality of just over 5000 people that has been home to my family since the mid 1800’s. At 1000 meters above sea level, it is a quaint, peaceful village economically driven by small coffee farms.
I am Miguel, a retired educator and world traveler. I am currently fulfilling a life-long dream of remodeling my family’s 90 year-old house and creating a space for artists, artisans, educators, and optimistic souls from around the world. Most of the construction and remodeling has been completed, leaving opportunities for mural painting, furniture building, limestone carving, and other creative maintenance work. The land is also being transformed into a mini food-forest and, more significantly, to a flower garden that will attract birds, bees, butterflies, bats, and beings of all kinds.
I invite you to spend some time imagining and creating tangible art, helping with plant care, building walking trails, weeding, improving fences, planting flower beds, constructing wooden bridges and trellises, and assisting in a variety of other garden features. The goal is to bring in more plants, insects, birds, and people to a diversified continent of the senses. Chickens likewise run through the property in fenced-in spaces, allowing them to enjoy what the land offers in a managed rotational approach where new plants can thrive.
As for me: I enjoy listening to travel stories, getting a taste of your musical playlists, hiking, reading, eating, and exploring how to complement the grounds with artistic expression. I strongly support healthy people in healthy communities. A smoke-free, drug-free, and responsible use of alcohol environment is promoted, and maintained at all times.

Arbeit
The garden is always ready for planting, pruning, and weeding. Around the house, there are many DIY opportunities for creating, repairing, and enhancing. I have ensured that a variety of tools (analog and electrical) are available for you to accomplish tasks, desires, and dreams. Art supplies are also available and abundant for the creative souls. Most activities happen in the early hours each day as I rise and set with the chicken's schedule. Activities are not structured, meaning there will not be a task list or set routine. Activities are instead determined each day, allowing for creative opportunities and spontaneity.

Unterkunft
There is a private bedroom with a shared bathroom for your stay. Internet is available most of the time, except when there is a power outage. The Internet is sufficient for communication and some entertainment; however, please be aware, constant video streaming will use-up the monthly allocation for all. You will have free access to a well-equipped kitchen and locally available food items to prepare your meals. Hopefully you enjoy cooking and can share your expertise! I will be happy to stock food items for your creativity to flourish and to supply our coffee–it is magical.

We are surrounded by nature off the beaten path, and life in the village is very, very quiet. Please be aware that this opportunity is for people who like experiences in remote places–my house is in the middle of rolling mountains and surrounded by coffeefarms.
It is expected that you are self-driven, able to work independently, and have an eye for what can be done next. A guitar and a violin are available for the musically inclined. Yoga mats and wonderful spaces to practice are available. A soccer field is just a 15 minute walk away; there are pick-up games every afternoon. Local outings are often organized to visit neighbors around their coffee farms (at 1600 meters altitude), where we will search for new plants and learn about their planting practices.
The most accessible large urban area is Tegucigalpa, 120 kms away. There are about three daily bus departures to and arrivals from Tegucigalpa. Cost is about 150 Lempiras ( ~6 USD) and takes about 4 hours transit time. I travel to Tegucigalpa about once per month to buy supplies and some food items not available in town. You are welcome to travel along. The new international airport (XPL) in Comayagua is 80 Km away. Two daily buses (cost @ 200 Lempiras ~8 USD ) are available and the ride is through pristine mountain scenery. Please note: Banking and ATM services are not available in Minas de Oro.
As an adolescent, many years ago, I was an exchange student to the United States of America and so, I do appreciate the life-energizing experiences Workaway may provide for you, and for me as your host. ¡Bienvenidos!

They are a joy to chat with, filled with wonderful travel stories and life lessons, and fully committed to social initiatives in favor of migrants and disadvantaged populations.

Que tus caminos te sigan llenando de asombro, aquí los nuestros quedan llenos de gratitud y de esperanza.
Miguel is a poet and storyteller, though he would blush at my calling him that. A lover of nature, patron of the arts, academic scholar, and profoundly deep thinker - Miguel welcomed me into his grandparents' home with utter kindness and generosity. There, amongst his flowers… read more
