Beschreibung
We are Kedar, Rajesh, and Ajay, and we are based near Tenkasi in South Tamil Nadu, close to the mountains and waterfalls of the Courtallam / Old Kutralam area.
Kedar is French Canadian and settled in Tamil Nadu in 2025 after many years of living and working in Western contexts. Rajesh was born in Chennai, has also lived several years in Canada, and remains an important part of the project while currently moving between Canada and India. Ajay is a local friend who is now gradually joining the project more closely and training into a hosting role as things continue to grow.
Together, we are developing a small ashram-style space rooted in simple living, spiritual practice, nature, and human connection. We recently purchased land near Old Kutralam, where the main space is now under construction. While that building is being developed, we are living in a rented house about 10 minutes away, where we currently host guests in a simple shared home environment.
This project is still small, personal, and evolving. Rather than a formal retreat centre or traditional ashram, it is an intimate space for shared living, spiritual practice, cultural exchange, and honest human connection. It is a place where Eastern and Western approaches can meet naturally through daily life.
We are especially interested in practices such as meditation, chanting, singing (guitar, harmonium, voice), puja, havan, contemplation, empathy circles, connection practices, and other forms of self-inquiry. Depending on the person and the moment, we may also offer simple meditation guidance, reflective exercises, or conversational processes adapted to what feels useful and relevant. Some days are more structured, with shared practices or outings; other days are more open and spacious. We value depth, playfulness, curiosity, sincerity, and real exchange more than rigid schedules.
About the place & local area
The house is located in rural Tamil Nadu, in a conservative South Indian setting where English is not widely spoken and Western travellers are still relatively rare. This is not a party destination or a polished tourist hub. Part of the experience here is learning how to move respectfully and comfortably within a local Tamil environment that remains largely untouched by Western culture.
Within walking distance there is a small village with very basic amenities such as a tea shop and vegetable store. We regularly drive to the nearby town, about 15 minutes away, for markets, temples, and daily needs, and often make trips further out for temple visits, waterfalls, hikes, and exploration of the surrounding region. Bicycles are also available for local exploration.
What we love about this area is its natural beauty, its living temple culture, the rhythm of village life, and the feeling of being slightly off the beaten path. For people who appreciate authenticity, slowness, simplicity, and cultural immersion, it can be a very special place to experience South India.
How we live & who this is for
This is a shared living space, not a service-based accommodation. At the moment we usually host one volunteer at a time, though we may soon be able to host more with additional sleeping space.
The exchange here is based less on heavy work and more on participation, presence, adaptability, and genuine engagement. We especially appreciate people who are interested in joining shared life in a natural way — whether that means helping with simple tasks, taking part in practices when they feel called, exploring the area together, offering thoughtful feedback as the project evolves, and contributing to a respectful, balanced atmosphere in the home.
This experience will likely suit people who are open-minded, emotionally mature, spiritually curious, and comfortable with a slower, more relational way of living.
A small nuance: I would keep “we” throughout once Rajesh is reintroduced, even if in practice you are the main host most of the time. It reads more stable and welcoming. Then elsewhere in messages or video calls, you can clarify the current day-to-day reality more precisely.

Kultureller Austausch und Lernmöglichkeiten
Cultural exchange here happens primarily through shared daily life and lived experience rather than through formal lessons or presentations.
Guests are invited to experience South Indian culture from the inside, including:
• everyday life in a rural Tamil Nadu setting,
• interaction with local communities where English is not widely spoken,
• learning how to move respectfully and comfortably in a conservative village context,
• becoming familiar with local rhythms, customs, and social norms.
A central part of the experience is exposure to living Hindu temple culture. This may include:
• visiting local temples and sacred sites,
• learning who the deities are and how temples are traditionally approached,
• understanding basic temple etiquette and ritual sequences,
• exploring how ritual, devotion, and symbolism function in daily life rather than only as abstract philosophy.
I also share my own cross-cultural perspective, having lived for many years in Western contexts and now resettled in South India. This creates a natural dialogue between Eastern and Western approaches to spirituality, psychology, embodiment, and self-inquiry.
Cultural exchange is also supported through:
• shared meals and cooking,
• music and chanting (voice, harmonium, guitar),
• circle-style conversations, empathy circles, and connection practices,
• informal discussions around meditation, contemplation, and personal practice.
Rather than trying to “teach Indian culture,” the aim is to create conditions for direct experience, reflection, and mutual learning.
A few subtle improvements I made:
• “authentic relating games” became connection practices, which reads more naturally on Workaway.
• “for our guests and for ourselves” was removed, because now the profile is centered more clearly on you as host.
• “becoming familiar with” sounds a bit more natural than “understanding” in one of the bullet points.
Arbeit
This is not a traditional Workaway focused on heavy physical labour or rigid schedules. The help here is light to moderate, varied, and woven into shared daily life rather than based on long hours of repetitive work.
On most days, contributions naturally add up to around 2 to 5 hours per day, 5 days a week, usually spread throughout the day. This may include:
• helping with cooking and simple meal preparation,
• washing dishes,
• light cleaning and keeping common spaces pleasant and orderly,
• helping maintain a calm and organized shared home environment,
• joining regular visits to the construction site,
• watering trees on the land,
• tending to the earth and helping plant new trees from time to time.
Beyond practical help, an important part of this exchange is genuine participation in the life of the place.
I am especially interested in hosting people who enjoy:
• joining shared practices such as singing, chanting, puja, havan, meditation, or circle-style conversations,
• exploring the surrounding area together, including temples, waterfalls, hikes, and village life,
• offering reflections and feedback as the project gradually evolves,
• participating in music, self-inquiry, or simple shared practices when it feels natural.
From time to time, depending on the person, I may also share meditation guidance, reflective exercises, or other simple inner-work structures. These are offered in a flexible way, based on interest, energy, and what seems relevant in the moment.
Most activities here are invitations rather than rigid obligations, and the rhythm is adapted to the day, the people present, and the general flow of life. At the same time, this is a shared and relational environment, not a place for living completely separately or staying isolated. I am looking for people who enjoy being present, curious, adaptable, and genuinely involved in shared life.
This experience is best suited to people who are comfortable with fluid schedules, shared responsibility, and helping co-create a warm, respectful living environment rather than following a fixed program.

English is commonly spoken between us, and we enjoy conversations that naturally touch on language, meaning, and cultural nuance. We are interested in natural language exchange through daily life. Tamil is the local language here, and guests are exposed to it through village life, travel, temples, and everyday interactions. We also enjoy sharing basic Tamil expressions and cultural context, but this is informal and experiential rather than structured language teaching.
Unterkunft
We currently offer one private bedroom with a double bed and an attached private bathroom. This is the standard accommodation and is suitable for one person or a couple.
We are also in the process of adding a bunk bed, which may soon allow us to host more than one Workawayer at a time.
The house is a shared living space, so guests have both privacy and access to common areas. The accommodation is simple, comfortable, and home-based, reflecting the early and evolving stage of the project.
We offer three vegetarian meals per day. Depending on the day and the flow of life, I may cook for you, or we may cook together as part of shared daily life.

This project is still in an early and evolving stage, and I see hosting as a mutual exploration rather than a finished or polished offering. I value open communication, flexibility, and honesty, and I like to check in regularly to make sure the exchange feels balanced and meaningful on both sides.
This is a relational space. While personal time and solitude are respected, the experience works best for people who enjoy being present, curious, and engaged in shared life rather than staying on the sidelines.
I live in a conservative rural Tamil Nadu context, and sensitivity to local culture, dress norms, and social dynamics is important when moving outside the home. I am happy to guide and support guests in navigating this respectfully.
Photography and sharing on social media are welcome only with the consent of everyone involved.
Before confirming a stay, I like to arrange a video call to make sure expectations and intentions are aligned. This helps create a good experience for everyone.
