The school was started by Alex, family and friends to help children in Muke village in Zambia grow and facilitate a quality education.

The staff includes Alex (school Director)
    Teacher's names:
    Ophaness
    Patricia

    Cookers: Auntress and Rosemary

All the staff at the school are volunteers and the school provides meals and school materials only through donations.

School is held in a building made of natural materials built by Alex and the community. Recently we were able to build a second school and thank you to the volunteers who helped us with the build! (Pictures of the natural structures are in the photos section).
We are cooking, teaching, and looking after the children outside or in the natural building.
Hopefully this will be a temporary solution until we raise enough money to build a solid structure.

The school looks after children, our community and other surrounding areas of Muke Village. Children are suffering walking long distances to find other Schools. Your support is valued to us and the future of our children in the community.
The closest neighboring school is a trust School that has helped us get started and has provided us supplies.

Volunteers are welcome to come participate in caring for the children of the school. We kindly ask that you are respectful and appropriate when volunteering with the children.

The Muke village is about 20 minutes' drive from Livingstone Zambia. In Livingstone there are many tourist attractions such as the beautiful Victoria Falls (one of the world's wonders).
There are many delicious restaurants to try and open-air markets with plenty of artwork and crafts from Zambian culture.

The Muke village is very close to the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and the Zimbabwe National Park.
Other options are going on safari tours in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park to see wildlife such as hippos, giraffes, zebras, elephants and more. At the Victoria Falls there is bungee jumping, rafting, zipline, and many more activities.

The Muke Village is in walking distance to the beautiful Zambezi River where you can possibly see crocodiles or hippos with the locals as a safety guide. It is possible to take a paid boat tour down the Zambezi River to see elephants, crocodiles, and hippos too.

We have cats and dogs that roam around in the village for people to be aware if you are allergic or afraid of them. The cats and dogs are friendly.

Travellers will benefit from learning about Zambia's culture in the Southern Province near Livingstone. Travellers will have the opportunity to see wildlife such as elephants, baboons, hippos, crocodiles, zebras, and more. There are many travel destinations in Livingstone Zambia including a natural wonder the Victoria Falls. From Muke Village to Victoria Falls it costs 1,200k (this includes the driver waiting for passengers too). It will be more cost effective for volunteers to plan on traveling to Vicotria Falls before coming or after leaving Muke Village.

Travellers will be able to cook with families and eat Zambia's traditional food.

    Arbeit

Travellers are welcome to come volunteer at the school to assist with teaching and taking care of young children (preschool age). Classes run daily from 8 am to 2 pm and on Friday they go to the sports field. Activities include playing with the children, teaching basic subjects such as math, English, writing, etc.

We are currently in the process of building a natural shower and toilet for the volunteers. As well as a natural structure for the volunteers to sleep in. Volunteers can learn from Alex and community how natural structures are built in Zambia. If volunteers are able to come in the next few weeks, we will probably ask for help with these projects.

Also, we are working on making the garden bigger. Volunteers are welcome to help in gardening too.

With the help of the community members and volunteers there is a traditional style house for volunteers to sleep in. Pictures are provided of the room, bathroom, shower and kitchen area. We have 1 room with 2 beds for volunteers to sleep in. There is a shared communal kitchen with a cookstove that volunteers can use to cook their meals.

If more than 2 people are wanting to volunteer at the same time we have tents that can be set up inside the office building. If there is a group/family more than 2, we can find a way to accommodate.

Volunteers are welcome to bring their own tent or campervan too if they prefer.

Please reach out if you have any questions on accommodation.

    Food:
Volunteers will need to bring their own food or purchase their own food to cook for all 3 meals. If you would like to cook a traditional style Zambian dish with us, we would love to teach and cook the meal together.
Since we can't afford to provide 3 meals a day, we only ask volunteers to work a maximum of 15 hours a week (2-3 hours a day, 5 days a week, with 2 full days off).
The schedule can also be flexible if volunteers want to plan a trip to the Victoria Falls or other sight-seeing destinations.

    Advice on packing:
Bring clothes for hot days and also light jackets for the night or windy days. A raincoat, if you are coming in the raining season.
Since it is not easy to get medication and other related items close by, please also bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent besides your normal medication. Some people take Malaria prophylaxis pills when traveling to Zambia too. We have some mosquito nets but also advised to bring your own too for sleeping (these can be purchased at ShopRite in Zambia too). We have some solar panels for the village, but charging can still be limited. It is wise to bring a charging bank for your electronics.

    Directions to School 🚙:
To reach the school from Livingstone, Alex can assist in organizing a local taxi for you, which will cost K350 one-way trip.
Alternatively, there are local shared taxis available as well, charging K80 per person one-way. Please note that these taxis may take some time to depart as they wait to fill up with passengers. Alex can contact a driver for you.
Some volunteers like to take public transport but on Sundays the public drivers are not working. If volunteers are arriving on Sunday, it is required to use the local taxi for K350.

    What to Bring:
Since we can only provide 1 meal a day it is advised to bring groceries. It depends on what you eat and how much, but previous volunteers have said they budgeted around $35 to $50 USD per week per person for their meals. To pick up any groceries, there is a supermarket called Shoprite located in the center of Livingstone. They have a wide variety of items available. The newer Shoprite near Pizza Hut is larger and offers even more options.

It is advised to bring your own drinking water. Depending on the length of stay it is advised to purchase the large 5-gallon water jugs at Shoprite (it is not expensive). This will cut down on waste from plastic bottles because the 5-gallon jugs can be returned to the store, recycled, and reused. You can simply use your own water bottle and pour water from the 5-gallon jugs. We have water on our site from a pump for washing dishes, clothes, etc. but it is not advised for foreigners to drink this water.

We cook mainly using wood fire or sometimes coals if we have them. We cook "Nshima" every day and we are delighted to share our meals with you. Thanks to the volunteers, we tried new foods like spaghetti, couscous, many new types of beans, vegetables which we really enjoy!
If you need any assistance with cooking, my wife Antress will be available to help you. She is always willing to help our volunteers.

We can eat always together and share our meals!
