Hi! We are Jannis (24) and Nele (26), a young couple living in our home in the beautiful Black Forest. We both work full-time, Jannis is an electrician and Nele is a physical therapist, but outside of work, we love spending time with our animals and working on the many projects around our property.

We bought our house about a year ago, so there is always something new to discover, improve or build! Jannis loves working on and restoring cars, while Nele enjoys being creative and trying out all kinds of different projects.

Our home is a large house with two holiday apartments as well as our own apartment. We share the property with one horse, two Shetland ponies, two big dogs, seven chickens and two cats, so there is definitely never a boring day here!

We love being outdoors and enjoying the nature around us. You can go hiking directly from the house for hours, and our dogs or even the Shetland ponies are always happy to join. We are also very close to the Swiss and French borders, making it a great place to explore the Black Forest and other parts of Europe.

We speak German and English and a little Spanish, and we really enjoy meeting new people, learning about different cultures and sharing our everyday life with others. We are looking forward to welcoming someone who enjoys animals, nature, getting involved in projects and simply experiencing life here with us.

For us, a Workaway stay is not only about helping around the house, we would also love to share our everyday life, our region and our culture with you and learn about yours in return.

We have a lovely group of friends nearby, many of whom speak English, and we would be happy to introduce you to them and give you the opportunity to meet some local people. We occasionally go to local events, especially during the summer when the wine region comes alive with wine festivals and other events. Basel is also very close by, with plenty of music, theatre, art, craft events and restaurants to explore.

We enjoy cooking and would love to cook together sometimes, whether that’s something local, something from your home country or simply trying out a new recipe. In summer, we often have barbecues, and we are always happy to sit down together for dinner, have a beer, or enjoy a cocktail evening. At the same time, we both work full-time, so we also really value giving each other space and independence. You don’t have to spend all your free time with us, we think it’s nice to have a good balance between shared experiences and time for yourself.

There are also plenty of things we can share with you. We can teach you some German and help you practice the language in everyday situations. We can show you how to care for horses and manage the stable, and Nele, as an animal physiotherapist, can also share knowledge about the medical and physical side of animal care if that’s something you’re interested in. There are also plenty of practical things to learn around the property, such as working with wood and preparing firewood for our wood-fired oven.

Nele also loves doing creative projects just for fun, so we sometimes have spontaneous creative evenings where we try something new together. And if you have a skill, hobby, recipe or tradition from your own country, we would love for you to share it with us too. Maybe you can cook us one of your favourite meals, teach us something new or introduce us to a little part of your culture.

When we have time, we’d also love to explore the area together, whether that’s going for a hike, visiting a small local café, discovering a new place or taking a trip into the surrounding region. We especially enjoy hiking and being outdoors.

Ultimately, we hope the cultural exchange goes both ways. We can show you a little bit of German and Black Forest life, introduce you to our friends and the local community, and share our knowledge and hobbies, while we are just as excited to learn about where you come from, your experiences, your food, your traditions and the things you enjoy.

We are looking for someone who would like to stay with us for around 4–8 weeks or longer and who enjoys a mix of animal care, practical projects and some light household tasks.

Animal experience is important to us, as helping with our animals will be a regular part of the stay. This can include feeding and caring for the horse, Shetland ponies, dogs, chickens and cats, as well as helping to keep the stables and animal areas clean and tidy.

As we are still settling into our new property, there are also plenty of practical projects to help on. Depending on your interests and abilities, this could include gardening, tasks with fences, tidying up the horse stable, general tasks around the house and property, or helping with other small projects that come up.

We mainly are looking for help with our private property. We would also appreciate some light household help, such as vacuuming, tidying and keeping shared areas clean. The holiday apartments will be taken care of, so we only require help with our own property.

We don’t expect you to help all day, we want the exchange to be enjoyable and balanced. There is plenty of free time to relax, explore the area, go hiking or work on your own projects. If you work remotely, that’s absolutely fine too. We have very good Wi-Fi and are happy for you to combine your home office with your stay.

In return, you will have your own guest room in our apartment and shared use of our kitchen and large living room. Most importantly, we hope you will feel comfortable here and become part of our everyday life for a while!

You will stay with us in our private apartment within our large house in the Black Forest. You will have your own private guest room, giving you your own space and privacy, while the kitchen, bathroom and our large living room are shared with us.

Our home is spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room to relax after a day of working or exploring. You are very welcome to use the kitchen and cook for yourself, and we are also happy to share meals together when it fits our schedules.

We have a very good and reliable internet connection, so working remotely or having a home office alongside your stay is absolutely possible. There is also plenty of space around the property to enjoy the outdoors and, of course, lots of nature right on our doorstep.

As we live together with our animals, the house is definitely a lively place, there will usually be dogs, cats and other animals around. We are therefore looking for someone who enjoys living with animals and feels comfortable sharing a home with them.

You will have a good balance of your own private space and the opportunity to be part of our everyday life, and we are happy to give you as much independence as you need during your stay.

We will provide meals. The fridge is usually fully stocked and we can always go out for a supermarket trip, to make sure your needs and wants are fulfilled. Shared meals will be offered in the evening, as we love to meet and get to know our workawayers. As we both work full time during the week, breakfast and lunch can be enjoyed individually.

We do have public transport nearby, but the bus connections are not very frequent, so having your own car would make everyday life and exploring the area much easier. A mountain bike would also be a great option, as there are lots of beautiful routes and places to discover around us. From time to time, we can also offer you a lift or take you with us when we go grocery shopping.

In your free time, there is plenty to do: hiking directly from the house, exploring the Black Forest, visiting nearby towns, or making trips towards Switzerland and France. Basel is also close enough for a day or evening trip.

We are looking for someone who is independent and comfortable making their own plans, but who also enjoys joining us for dinner, hikes, barbecues, local events or other activities when the opportunity comes up. We like having people around and sharing our life with them, but we also respect that everyone needs their own time and space.
