I stayed with Merce and her two children last summer for 4 weeks and it was brilliant! I think about the trip often and miss them a lot! Merce, Abril, and Nil welcomed me into their lives with kindness and made me feel like family. Merce communicated with me about what she expected, but was not strict and allowed me to plan with the children for
… read more their activities. Merce works 5 days a week, but was home by 3pm most days, so I was alone with the children for 6 hours a day. The dad, Pere, lives 5 minutes away and the children spend every other week with Pere. We spent lots of time at the beach, the local pool, visiting family friends, and travelling in the local area almost every night. They have close friends who live 5 minutes away and we would spend lots of time with them. The friends had a workaway person too, so it was nice to have a friend at the beginning. On weekends, I could to go to Barcelona or Tarragona for tourism. On evenings, if I wanted to be alone or go into Tarragona without the family, that was allowed and encouraged. Merce gave advice and helped me navigate travel in Catalonia.
The children are very clever and very funny. Abril's English is incredible for her age and we only spoke in English. I think she will be fluent soon. Nil is younger and has had fewer English lessons; we struggled to communicate at times because my Spanish is limited. This caused frustration at times from Nil and from myself. Talking to Nil when he is upset can be helpful sometimes to explain my feelings. Sometimes I had to rely on Abril or Merce to help me talk about his feelings. Having a good level of Spanish or Catalan is very helpful for this workaway, especially to talk to Nil or Pere. It is not essential to be fluent, but I wish I had learned more before I went away.
It is important to be calm, have patience, and be responsible to do this workaway. Sometimes the children can fight with each other. This is normal for their age and is understandable for a long summer. It was a learning experience to learn how to enforce rules and provide some discipline during difficult days. When it was a difficult day, I always spoke with Merce to tell her what happened and she would give me advice or speak to the children. I made a couple mistakes, but was able to learn from them. If you want to do this workaway, you must be comfortable with being the responsible adult for two children and managing if they get hurt or upset.
The workaway was very safe and supportive. Merce became my friend during our stay and felt like a big sister at times. She is very friendly and loving. We stay in contact now and I would love to visit again when time allows. Merce and Marta (her best friend) helped me a lot with my Spanish and took me to their favourite local spots. I didn't have to pay for anything, other than travel and my solo trips. If I bought extra groceries, Merce would compensate me. And we cannot forget, Oreo, the magic family cat who lives Merce and the children. He is beautiful. I never loved a cat before I met Oreo. He is the best cat in the world and I miss him.
This is a great workaway if you want to be immersed in a culture and be with a Catalan family. Everyone is kind and friendly to you (as long as you are also kind and friendly). I felt like I was with family and I know I will come back to visit or maybe to live one day. I ate some of the best food on this trip! My Spanish improved a lot and I have been able to hold good conversations since I returned. If you do this workaway, please be responsible and safe because you are looking after children. The children are wonderful, but when they fight it can be stressful and you need to stay calm. Overall, I promise you will have lots of fun and laughter with this family!Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

Having Yvanna at home has been a vibrant experience. From the first moment she conquered us with her bright smile and her vital energy.
It was amazing that the first night she sat on the rug with our kids and started sharing stories and books with them.
The coolest thing for me was that she had Abril tell her a story in Catalan by translating it
… read more directly into English. It was a powerful exercise for her english. I knew at that moment that the experience would be worth it.
She was willing to help all the time...with the kids or the house. She was so energetic and creative that she was everything we were looking for in our children. She spent a lot of time finding creative activities to do with them... like origami and crafts... She taught them about Asian history and culture...
We shared walks and conversations and I felt that everything was very easy with her. A sincere and clear person.
I would like to repeat the experience with her and have her stay longer at home with us.

I'm so lucky to have had my first workaway experience with of Merce, Pere, Abril & Nil! 💛
Abril & Pere are just so open-minded and curious. They often asked about my culture and the places I've traveled to. They were also very eager to share about their family and culture. They cook AMAZING FOOD! We go the beach a lot, I think we went 3x in a
… read more week. The rest of the time, they showed me around Tarragona and La Pobla. I felt very much like part of their family.
Abril is a very special kid. She is very resourceful and kind and takes good care of her brother Nil. We spent a lot of time doing arts and crafts. She showed me what she liked and suggested activities that she wanted to do. One rainy day, she even left me a surprise by leaving an umbrella in my room after she found out I was planning to walk around la pobla. She speaks english extremely well and helps translate to Nil at times. I usually take care of the kids between 1-4pm when Merce and Pere are at work and when Merce comes back we travel and explore.
Tarragona is easy to get to, with multiple daily trains from Barcelona. And from Tarragona to La Pobla, there are multiple trips throughout the week except for Sunday which only has 4 trips. La pobla, although small, is a pretty cool pueblo with very friendly people. When I walk around, people talk to me and I get to know a bit more about the culture while practicing Spanish!
Overall, it was really an amazing experience and I can't believe how lucky I was to find this family. They're very welcoming and at the same time, made sure I had enough space and time. The parents set boundaries with the kids so I didn't have to. Their way of parenting is also commendable, one where they treat their kids as their own person, not coddling them nor giving into everything they want. The kids set the table, clean up and take care of themselves. I can't recommend the family enough and if my time permits, I'd love to be part of the family again in the future!Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

What an unbelievable experience! I don’t know how to write a review for people who feel like another family to me, but I’ll do my best :)

The kids were not shy for long, and had a million questions and things to show me- their energy is infectious and wonderful!! Abril is kind, compassionate, helpful, and genuinely fun to talk to. She and I bonded over our favorite songs, fun sunglasses, and American candies ( ;) ), and I miss my little Spanish sister so much.
I only speak a little Spanish, but Abril’s ability to speak English takes a huge level of stress off, especially when it was just the 3 of us, since Nil doesn’t speak a ton of English yet.
Nil is funny, passionate, energetic, and entertaining. He is an emotional little man, affectionately nicknamed the “drama king” by all of us, but he could not be more of a joy to be around. Taking care of kids requires patience, but at the end of the day Nil will always make you giggle, and helping him through some of his tough spots taught me a lot, and helped me grow as a nanny and as a person in general.
Merce and Pere are simply incredible people. Their passion for life, the love they have for their children, and their open-mindedness taught me so much. All the conversations I got to have with Merce, the laughter shared with Pere, and seeing them set examples for their children was incredible. Pere is also an AMAZING cook- I consistently got to eat the best food of my life with them, and I can NOT wait till I go back and get to eat more paella, arroz negro, y Fanta Limon!!! ;p
I cannot express enough positives about this family. If you get the opportunity to stay with them, take it- you will have an incredible experience.
Love and smiles!!

This family is quite extraordinary. I find it difficult to express, but they have such an open, reflective and energetic way of being. I also felt they sincerely wanted to know me and be my friends beyond being grateful for my dedication to English teaching.

Thank you Mercè, Pere, Albert, Abril and Nil. It was a pleasure to have met you. I suspect I will forever be reminded of you whenever I hear the songs "We are the champions" or "mamma mia" :o)Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.
