  I'm a Ugandan Human Rights Defender who grew up in western Uganda. My mother died when I was one year old, and my father raised me alone with very little income. In 2004 and 2005, when I was 16 and 17 years old, I was forced out of school and into work because my family had nothing. I stopped working in 2006 and returned to school in 2007. Those years as a child laborer are not a footnote in my story — they are the foundation of my work. When I founded this project in 2021, I did so because I understood exploitation from the inside. That personal history gives this organization something that institutional programs rarely have: the genuine trust of survivors and communities who know I understand their reality, not just their circumstances.
  
  Our community literacy outreach project
  We empower children aged 5-17 in rural districts (Kasese, Mpigi, Bunyangabu, Ntoroko and Gomba) through literacy, active play and community engagement.
  What volunteers do:
  At The heart of our project is volunteers moving into rural communities to physically interact with students—reading books together, practicing writing, playing educational games and engaging in interactive learning sessions.
  
  Your presence as someone from a country with established quality education systems provides tremendous motivation and inspiration to these children. When they see international volunteers investing time to read and play with them, it opens their minds to educational possibilities and shows them that learning is valued. This cross-cultural exchange sparks curiosity, builds confidence and helps children dream bigger for their futures.
  
  Our approach:
  Interactive Literacy – Volunteers lead one-on-one and group reading sessions using culturally relevant, engaging materials in safe community spaces.
  Learning Through Play – Traditional games, jump rope, hopscotch, rhymes and creative activities teach teamwork, discipline and life skills while making education joyful.
  Mentorship & Support – Our trained field team provides structure and guidance, while volunteers offer encouragement, personal attention and living examples of educational achievement.

  -Explore Uganda's natural beauty — from the Rwenzori mountains in Kasese to the wetlands of Mpigi, learning about local agriculture, resources and environmental stewardship
  -Develop adaptability and resilience by navigating life in a context different from your own
  -Gain clarity on global inequalities while witnessing the strength, joy and dignity of communities often labeled "disadvantaged"
  -Return home with new skills — patience, creative problem-solving, cross-cultural competence and a deeper understanding of what true community looks like
  This is genuine exchange. You'll give your time and presence, and in return, you'll receive lessons in community, resilience and joy that no classroom can teach. The children will learn from you, but you will likely learn just as much from them.

  Arbeit

  We are seeking compassionate volunteers to join our rural community literacy project in Uganda. This is a hands-on, immersive experience where you'll work directly with children aged 5-17 in some of Uganda's most underserved rural districts.
  You will be required to:
  -Lead one-on-one and small group reading activities with children using our collection of culturally relevant books
  -Help children develop their writing skills through guided exercises, storytelling and creative expression
  -Assist with basic literacy foundations, pronunciation and language development
  -Organize and participate in traditional games, jump rope, hopscotch and physical activities that make learning joyful
  -Facilitate drawing, storytelling and imaginative play that build confidence and teamwork
  -Talk about your home country, culture and educational experiences—this inspires children and broadens their horizons
  -Engage children in informal English conversation to build their communication skills naturally
  -Your presence as an international volunteer demonstrates that education is valued globally and opens doors to possibilities
  -Partner with our field staff who will provide structure, guidance and local expertise
  -Adapt activities based on children's ages, interests, and literacy levels with support from our team
  -Immerse yourself in rural community life and build meaningful connections with children and local families

  WHAT TO BRING
  Volunteers should bring their own bed sheets, towels, toothpaste, toothbrush and other personal items to ensure comfort during their stay.
  IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
  Please be aware that Uganda is a developing country, so some services, infrastructure, and amenities may not meet international standards. We encourage volunteers to approach these differences with an open mind and cultural sensitivity, embracing the opportunity to experience life in a different context.
  HEALTHCARE & ESSENTIALS
  The accommodation is conveniently located near shops, groceries, supermarkets and pharmacies. Basic medicines and health supplies are readily available for purchase locally, so volunteers don't need to worry about accessing essential items during their stay.
  TRANSPORTATION
  Public transport is easily accessible in the area. Shared minibus taxis operate throughout the area, providing an affordable way to travel to different destinations. Boda-bodas, which are motorcycle taxis, offer a quick and convenient option for shorter local trips.
  TIME OFF & TOURISM OPPORTUNITIES
  During free time, volunteers have the wonderful opportunity to explore Uganda's stunning natural beauty and incredible wildlife. Our trusted local tour partner, Butseme Adventures, offers experienced guides who can arrange wildlife safaris to Queen Elizabeth National Park, mountain hikes in the Rwenzori Mountains and cultural excursions to nearby attractions. These tours provide opportunities to see gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants, lions and many other species in their natural habitats. All tours are arranged at the volunteer's own cost and are entirely optional, allowing volunteers to customize their experience based on their interests and budget.
