My stay at Bert's castle has been my first Workaway experience, and I'm grateful that I lived such a beautiful three weeks. I learned a lot about wood, garden caring (also thanks to the help of Ruben, the other workawayer) and dutch recepies; also I shared my experience in italian cooking. I had some trip in other cities of Netherlands. Last, but

Unforgottable experience!
Our first Workaway experience took place at Kasteel Obbicht in the Netherlands and it was really special. Being the first time we participated in this kind of exchange, we were a bit uncertain and also a little worried about how it would go. We did not know exactly what to expect, but from the first moments we felt welcomed with warmth and

Bert, our host, is an extremely affable person, nice and always available. It has a spontaneous way of making you feel at ease, and has been very attentive to our needs from the beginning. With him you easily create a nice dialogue, and it was really interesting to share moments together, listen to his stories and find out more about life in the Netherlands.
Obbicht Castle, surrounded by tranquility and greenery, is a charming place full of atmosphere. We really enjoyed the beauty and uniqueness of this place, which made our stay even more enjoyable.
This experience left us with very positive memories and, above all, the desire to continue with other Workaway projects. We are really grateful to Bert for making this first step so serene and inspiring. We recommend this experience to anyone who wants an authentic, enriching and full of humanity stay in the Netherlands.
We were so lucky to be guests at Bert’s beautiful place by the Maas for two weeks.
Bert is a wonderful host—hospitable, a great communicator, knowledgeable, and humorous.
He is a true storyteller, sharing the most diverse experiences from his life.
Two weeks were far too short to hear all his stories, so we will definitely come back to hear the

Vincent and I mainly worked with wood. Moving wood, burning wood in the enormous stove, processing branches from the pruned weeping willow, pruning six linden trees and processing that wood, cutting branches from the fallen chestnut tree and setting them aside to dry.
We also did a lot of gardening in the flower border, allowing the daffodils and hellebores to reappear.
It was beautiful to see color return to the garden—truly a spring feeling.
What I (Marjo) especially enjoyed was taking care of the Indian runner ducks.
After a week, they recognized me and started chatting excitedly whenever I walked by.
But maybe it wasn’t about me... maybe it was just about the food I gave them? :-)
The surroundings are beautiful, with a stunning view over the Maas and the spectacular locks at Born.
Obbicht is located in the narrowest part of Limburg, making it very easy to cross into Belgium (cheap fuel) and Germany (affordable groceries and drugstores).
In our opinion, Maastricht is the most beautiful city in the Netherlands, and it’s very easy to visit from Geleen-Lutterade station—just a 15-minute train ride.
It was great to meet Bert’s friends and be immersed in the Burgundian Limburg lifestyle.
If you’re looking for a unique Workaway experience, be sure to contact Bert.

Vom Workawayer (Rubén) für Host
The only bad thing about meeting Bert is realizing that your life is boring compared to other people's.
A privileged location. Great meals. And Bert, a top-notch companion.

We had a fantastic three weeks staying with Bert in the Limburg region. Bert was a great host who was incredibly accommodating and thought us so much on Dutch culture.
He was a great cook and always made sure we were well fed and looked after.
The property is breathtaking and will always be something we look back on with great fondness.
Bert

We spent most of our work time in the garden which was nice and peaceful.
I highly recommend staying with Bert.
Thanks again for everything!
Great guy - he introduced me to Workaway.info. - want to thank he for doing so.....we became friends in a short time!!!
I stayed with Bert for two weeks in late Summer '24 and will definitely be coming back to visit! You might just meet me there. Bert has beautified his place to a large extend already, and had all kinds of interesting projects for me to take on. But first and foremost, I tru-ly enjoyed him and his friends who he invited during my stay. As well as
… read more his art teacher friend and the sculptor friends living close by which have an amazing flower garden with statues and more and more. A garden of Eve truly. Had a nice adventure together excavating a Mesosaurus with them and creating rock art as well haha!
Bert has a lifetime full of amazing stories to share, so much so that he could seriously write a couple of books about them. He is social, understanding, artsy, a great cook and just generally a very good guy to stay with.
There is plenty of water and nature at and around his place, and he did his best to show me around while also juggling with a monument caretaker's responsibilities. I had my own place, plenty of roses to cut, wood to take care of, areas to brighten and evenings of laughter with him and his friends.
Special shoutout to his gardener Raf who's always in for a laugh, a good story and is there every TuesdayHelp us with gardening in the small village of Grootschermer, Netherlands
