You are welcome to come here with a recent negative corona test. You can self-isolate here. In fact, self-isolation is what happens here naturally. We are in the middle of forest, and have very little contact with the outside world.
The barracks are a disused former East German military installation for housing the troops of the inner-German border. I moved in here in March 2019 and, up until recently, have been engaged in a one-man transformative task.
I am creating a self-sufficient bastion of calm and contemplation. A place of art and love and conversation. Whilst the world outside tears itself apart with greed and ready-meals, here is a place where stillness and slowness reign.
There is much work to be done. The facilities are bare (but improving!).
The Workaway Suite has 6 comfortable bedrooms and a kitchen. It's clean and cosy. And the warmest part of the barracks due to all the curtains and soft furnishings and warming, happy atmosphere! It doesn't have a toilet or running water. Or heating. But we are finally into summer, so who needs heating anyway?
We do have a cinema, though. Noteevenkidding.
Last year, we repaired perimeter fences, acquired piggies, chopped a lot of wood, created the nut orchard, painted the cinema, renovated the table tennis table, and tended the vegetable garden to a harvest of great bounty! And then we dried it, pickled it, made jams and sauces, and learned all about how to store carrots and pumpkins.
We ate well, drank some rum from time to time, and exchanged pirate stories from all over the world. We culturally exchanged, we had good times!

In 2020, we tried to create the toilet and shower block. It turned out to be a lot more work that anyone thought possible. So, all of the ground work is now done, and this will be the first project of 2021. Do be aware, there is no hot water, showers, or toilets. Well, there is a chemical toilet, and we can heat water. Showering is up to you. Most people take a bucket into the woods :)
The huge range of practical skills you can try your hand at, from carpentry to brick laying, electrics, painting, interior decoration and, of course, self sufficient living. How to cut and split and stack wood is a constant learning.
There is usually some yoga going on somewhere! In the summer, I lead two classes a week - early Wednesday morning Ashtanga primary series (intense) and a 10am Sunday relaxed hatha flow vinyassa kinda thing.
The opportunity to learn from my decades of vegetable growing, preserving and pickling
Vegan cooking and a chance to experience self-sufficient veganism close up.
The opportunity to create. Living a few weeks entirely beyond the commonly accepted luxuries of modern living.
These are all experiences which are uncommonly offered. The aesticism of life here is most definitely seen as not just a plus, but intrinsic to the philosophy of what I am trying to build. It is not so much a rejection of modern living, as a wide-eyed amazement how modern living is so little questioned. If you want peace and quiet, you can find it here.
In other words, you are up for an adventure, you are of a happy disposition, and you believe in the transformative quality of hard work, I believe that anyone coming here will one day in the future look back on their time here and decide that, yes, it was indeed an important stepping stone which truly helped them find their path.
Vegan. Green. Drug Free. Drama Free.
We are always creating new productive areas from what is basically wasteland, growing food, pickling and preserving, saving seeds, whatever the season demands.
And there are "big project" improvements on top. I'll regularly update here with the next project. Check back frequently!
Currently: The vegetable garden is a mad panic to try to get everything into the soil which isn't there already. We're sowing like crazy, preparing new ground, watering and mowing and weeding daily
We've got a tonne of things to do with wood as well, from compost heaps to bee meadows and hotels
The pigs are in need of some loving. Come and give them a cuddle!
Thank you to all the wonderful workawayers who were with me in 2020. We rocked.

I try to keep The Barracks deliberately international. We love sharing languages here!
We now have two Workaway Suites. The main one has 6 bedrooms, a kitchen with all the basics, a drying line, and a stack of games. A constant undertaking of volunteers is to make these spaces better.
We're developing the "Digital Nomads" suite. If this is a title which applies to you, please get in touch and let's talk about your needs.
Tents and camper-vans are more than welcome!
There are only 3 rules in the Barracks:
1. No Drugs
2. Don't be a offensive
