We are an indigenous community (arround 60 adults and 70 children) that has been living in the forest since always. Now we are taking our first steps at the communitary tourism. That means that beside our community (200 meters away) We builded a place to show our indigenous knowledge and culture to tourists while we kept living in our way. We want to share our culture in order to preserve it and help to the forest sustentaniability by showing that is possible to live pretty much in harmony with nature avoiding the huge devastation of resources that "economical progress" is carrying to our world. Thas why is so important that our children and adults can learn English language to be empowered and transfer the knowledge of our culture to our visitors as well as preserve the nature.
We are Kerlly and David, a workaway couple who is writing this in English cause Luis, the comunity leader for the moment is not able to write in English neither use Workaway as well as internet stuff. We have met Luis by walking arround the road and just looking for a place to stay by asking local people. Now we are doing their first volunteer deal helping him indiferents things as well as to create the workaway profile, coordinate the firsts volunteers who want to help to develope their interesting project. As long as there is no internet at the community it may take some days to get the answer. Don't worry, is possible to find internet 30 minutes walking from the comunity.

Despite is very easy to reach the community by road, the area is amazing, and the experience of living in a genuine Amazonian village will be unforgettable.
You will be invited on all the activities of the community and also learn about us. Minga is very common (all community working together in behalf of the community). You will be living 20 meters from a beutifull river. There is also incredible as well as excellent hiking opportunities and flexible schedule.
The nature and Indigenous knowledge will surprise you a lot. From the community you will learn another way of living without WIFI and how to live in peace with the jungle. You will learn about chicha (one of our traditional drink), indigenous culture, traditional dances, nature knowledge, thoughts and unforgettable experiences.
Volunteers will be fully immersed in Wayuri culture for the duration of their visit. They will have the opportunity to learn Quechua language, learn about and see key species of plants and animals, and learn about the community’s conservation efforts.
Volunteers will work 15-20 hours per week organised depending on community and volunteer needs once you arrive. You will enjoy the trails along the communities, visit other communities, natural areas, canoing with traditional indigenous canoe, practice Quechua, learn how to cook indigneous meals, rediscover everyday the waterfall "Hola Vida" (1 hour walking from the community), enjoy the view from the amazing "mirador Indi-churi" and even see the cave digged inside the mountains or relax along the Puyo River.
We welcome all kind of help and we are so open to your ideas. Despite that, we have some needs in mind;
We are looking for an experienced, self-reliant and flexible English speaker to teach us (just having a basic english could help for the moment), for a unique volunteer position living and working in a indigineus comunity, in Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest. (being intermediate in Spanish required). The idea is teaching the adults or help at the community school with childrenn depending on the season. It will be basically teach by speaking in English and maybe some writting in the future.
We are also involved in reforestation and eco-building projects for our community, we want to work with creative people who have specials skills in ethnical art, building, design, landscaping.
We want to expand the trails of our community to explore tourists and locals, for this task we need people willing to work on construction projects, signaling and opening new trails.

The volunteer will live in a shared traditional hut (maybe with other volunteers or rarely with tourists), with a straw-thatched roof. You will be provided with a bed, mattress and bed sheets.
If you work 4 hours per day 5 days a week, three meals a day will be provided at no cost by the community. Meals typically consist of yucca, potato, or plantain, and fish or meat depending on the day.
If you want to cook by yourself, you'll work 3 hours per day 5 days per week and we'll give you the food and you could cook by yourself at our humble and simple kitchen.
The volunteers will enjoy 1 shared flushing toilette with toilet paper included (occidental toillete installed for tourists and volunteers shared) and also 1 shower with running water coming from stream shared between all the volunteers.
There are electricity to charge you electronic devices in the community. To use internet, the volunteer could walk some minutes to a neighbour who share his internet acces.
You will need to bring your toiletries: shampo, towels, napkins,etc.
SHOPPING
As long as there is not any shop arround the community we recommend you to buy in advance all you can need in Puyo city (like insect repelent, rain boots for working, extra snacks, toiletries, medicines etc.. ).
Once at the community you will be able in case of need to go shopping to Puyo city (45 minuts by bus).
TRANSPORT
The trip by bus takes 45 minuts from Puyo to Wayuri comunity. You should take the bus from Puyo bus station. Ask for the bus heading to "Pomona". Dont let them make you pay more thant 1,25 dollars for that trip. (no excuses, it cost 1,25 altough sometimes they had tried to ask us for more money). Once on the bus ask to get off at "Vencedores" point (that is the name of the area). Be aware that this is before arrive to "Pomona". Once you get off at "Vencedores" point you will keep walking on the same side of the road during 150 meters untill you will see a signal saying "Wayuri comunity". At that point go right and cross our pretty bridge to get into the Wayuri Community !! Welcome!!!
