We are Roy and Maria and we live on a (husky) farm in Eiby, approximately 13 km from the senter of Alta. We currently share our farm with: 35 Alaska huskies, Idèfix - the terrier - and our chickens.

We are including people (and animals) and we seek help with our tasks here on the farm. We are looking for someone who can "pull their own weight", i.e. help out with the animals, fixing equipment and contributing to the household. In other words; cooking and cleaning is part of being part of the team during ALL seasons.

During winter, work will consist of taking care of and cleaning the chicken-pen, defrostning and cutting meat for feeding dogs, re-fill kibbles and water, grooming, make sure the dogs have straw in their houses, keeping equipment in order (i.e sleds, harnesses, dogbooties, ganglines etc.), helping out With planning and making dinner. PLEASE NOTE - We only take in volunteers With sled dog-experience or carpentry-skills during winter season.

During spring/summer/autumn, apart from taking care of the animals, the work will mainly consist of: removing old straw from the dogyard, making/repairing/washing and painting doghouses, gardening/lawn mowing, setting and harvesting potatoes, fencing, painting buildings, fix/improve trails and repair gear. Another important project concists of gathering and making firewood for the winter. Great exercise! In Norway we have a saying that the firewood heats us up several times: when we cut the timber down, when we gather and cut it into firewood, and finally - when we burn it!

The autumn is also great in the Northern part of Norway. This is the time for wrapping up the projects of the summer and harvest from the nature; lingonberries, cloudberries and blueberries are abundant up here!

If you are thinking of applying, we are looking for people who:
-like and have experience with animals, especially dogs
-can see what needs to be done (like vacuming, start/empty the dishwasher, take out the trash…)
    -are in good health
-are practical and can fix things
    -can make a decent meal
-can communicate, have a sense of humor and a good mood
    -are flexible
-are hard working and able to function on their own as well as in a team
-have a licence (it is not a must, but we recommend it)
-are grown-ups or over 25 years of age

If you have the skills, you can also get go out with the dogs. However, this is not considered to be work, it's a bonus, Furthermore you can not be allergic to animals or hay/straw. Also we eat meat & seafood and so should you, since we have limited time for preparing several meals. Being a vegetarian/vegan this far north is a challenge in so many ways because of the long winter and poor choice of vegetables and fruits.

Still want to come stay with us? Please give us a GOOD REASON why we should pick you out of the crowd! Tell us about yourself and how you see yourself CONTRIBUTE to our team. And who knows, maybe our paths will cross!

We are both educated people and our English-skills are good. In addition to being mushers, we like fishing (during winter and summer) and hunting (in the fall). We live nearby the beautiful Eiby-river and close to the Alta-river. The latter is considered the best salmon river in the world. We have a lot of stories to share!

The nature around us is a great playground for both humans and animals! Alta is also the starting point for Offroad Finnmark (terrain cycling) in July and Finnmarksløpet (the biggest sleddog race in Europe, March). Alta has the midnight sun from the 20th of May until the 20th of July. Winter season normally starts late October and the record for starting the sled season from home is 25th of October, (though normal is around the 20th of November). The sled-season lasts until May. The dark season is from 20th of November until the 20th of January. During this time, the sun will not be visible in the horizon. But, the light is still beautiful! Also, Alta is the City of Northern lights!

There's a posibillty the moose and/or fox will turn up on your doorstep one morning... The Rock Art of Alta is on UNESCO`s World Heritage-list and worth a visit. Did you know that Alta has the biggest canyon in Northern Europe? There's also the posibillity to experience Sami-culture, doudji and silver art nearby. We'll introduce you to Norwegian cousine and the nature of Finnmark! But the best part is spending time with the animals :)!

The dogs - daily routines includes: changing water, preparing food/feeding, playing and exercising. And last but not least -poop-scooping (actually a favourite-routine for many, probably because the dogs really appreciate it). We have a checklist where routines are specified.

The chickens - daily routines includes: changing water, feeding, getting eggs and sometimes a bit of herding. Cleaning out the chicken pen is also necessary 2-3 times a week.

You will get your own room and privacy. There's a small livingroom and a toilet for the volunteers situated with the bedrooms. It's all warm, neat and clean and we'd prefer that you keep it that way. You'll share the kitchen and main bathroom (shower and washing machine) with us.

Eiby is 13 km from Alta city. Alta is 35 minutes by airplane from Tromsø and approximately 2 hours from Oslo. (Norway is a LOOOOONG country). So the easiest way to get here is by air. Bus from Tromsø takes 7 hours. We'll pick you up at the airport/bus station. Nearest train station is Narvik or Kiruna (Sweden), so we don't reccomend that (check map...). Hitchiking is considered fairly safe in Norway, but it might take some time... Anyways - safe travels!
