I stayed almost 3 weeks with Mélanie, Thomas, Jeanne & Capucine and I can say it was the time of my life and awesome first Workaway experience! They allowed me to immerse in French culture & cuisine (Saint-félicien became my favourite fromage and I got inspired by many recipes which I use at my home now!).

I was amazed at the girls because they have strong and placable characters. They are also extra cute! It was perfect for playing board games with them because it was such a great French lesson for me!
My love for apricots ❤️ has started in Chazay because I really enjoyed my work there. Everyday I woke up with a lot of energy, then I ate delicious breakfast - a dream! Listening to Radio Nostalgie and Rampapara (this is a Polish song!), dancing after peeling all of the apricots, trying and getting know how to make these très delicious sorbets and jams - these are my favourite work’s moments but there are pretty much more!!! Work was pleasant. Mélanie & Thomas gave me a great confidence with everything. I am super glad that there are people who are such easy-going, open-minded & trustworthy like them. Thanks to them for making me feel like a member of their family! I hope that I’ll meet them somewhere again (maybe in Poland?!). I am grateful for them for falling me in love with France!
And what about me? I gained more confidence in myself and travelling alone - impossible exist and you can do whatever you want!!!!

… read more french with Thomas while listening to music. Thomas always tried to make our job as pleasant as possible, switching tasks to avoid being tired of doing the same thing. I really appreciated it! Our tasks mainly consisted on chopping fruits to freeze them. It might seem boring but the atmosphere was so great that it was really great fun!
We shared our lunch with Thomas every day and sometimes Mélanie would come too. We didn't have to worry at all about food, there was always something healthy and delicious to eat (breakfast, lunch and dinner). I miss that food!
Thomas and Mélanie are super open-minded and respectful. It was really inspiring for me to meet them! Jeanne and Capucine were so much fun! We had great time playing and picnicking together. I wish I had spent more time with them! They are a very social family and some days had people at home for dinner and they always included us in those events, which were great to speak french and have a great time.
The village is small and lovely. The countryside around the village is beautiful. You can walk, bike or do wine tasting around. If you ever feel bored you can always take a bus and be in Lyon in 30 minutes for only 2€!

… read more week depending on what Melanie and Thomas wanted. We mostly processed fruits and vegetables for jam making, by cutting, chopping and juicing them. While we worked, we would talk in french and listen to music. It was very peaceful and always relaxed me. My favorite job was cutting up the peaches and removing the pits. They were so fun to squish! And If my coworker and I wanted a day off to explore, they would gladly rearrange the work schedule and were very reasonable in their expectations. If you respect them, they will respect you.
I got to watch the girls some days which was so wonderful. The girls are little angels and very patient if you are not fully fluent in French. They are so cute and very friendly. The girls like to bake, and Melanie and Thomas let me and the girls have full reign of the kitchen and make all sorts of desserts while I was there.
I am vegan and they were more than accommodating in providing plenty of healthy options for me and cooking for me. Melanie would ask what I would like from the store and always brought back what I requested and more.
I got to speak french 24/7 and when there was a miscommunication, they were very patient and would try to explain in English for me or simplify what they were saying in French.
Initially, I was a little bit worried about going to a foreign country by myself in which I did not fully speak the language and didn't know anyone. And then live with a bunch of people I had never met before, but Melanie and Thomas will truly take wonderful care of you and are very thoughtful. For example, I had expressed how I missed sushi, and the next day, Melanie went to the international supermarket and bought seaweed and sushi making ingredients for us to make later in the week.
I also must say, my co-worker was also fantastic and made the experience so amazing. It was great to gain a sister for a short time and work/explore with. I had my own room next to the au pair girl's room with a shower that was only used by the two of us. We had three delicious meals a day with all the family. Mélanie lent me her bike for going to work or making little tours around the town or to the river nearby. Chazay is a quiet little town with limited shopping possibilities, but there is a bus every hour which takes you to Lyon in only 25 minutes.
Helping to produce the lovely jam and sorbets was a nice experience. The work was simple and concrete (mostly cutting fruits and vegetables) which I enjoyed because I usually don't work a lot with my hands. Mélanie and Thomas are both good at explaining things clearly and patiently, and they always looked out for fair working hours. I usually worked from 9 to 12 am and from 2 to 4 pm from Monday to Friday and got paid 40 euros per week, in addition to free accommodation.

I spent almost a month there, I used to work 5h a day for 5 days a week. I had to cut fruits, label pots of jam and deliver them from time to time. Usually Mélanie and Thomas hire two workawayers, so you'll never feel alone and always have a partner to travel around the region. Personally, I developed a very close-knitted relationship with my American colleague.
Chazay is pretty close to Lyon, you can easily get there with coaches which come and go very often for very little money.
Overall, I had an incredible time there and I highly recommend this work-away to everybody.
L’expérience chez Mélanie et Thomas fut Incroyable. Ils m’ont traitée comme si j’étais une de leurs enfants, ils ont une mentalité très ouverte et ils vous font vraiment confiance même si vous venez d’arriver chez eux. Ils sont très ouverts à la cuisine végane et végétarienne. Mélanie est très sincère et elle explique clairement ce qu’elle s’attend de vous. Thomas est très patient et il explique comment dérouler votre travail.
Je suis restée chez eux pendant un mois, je travaillais 5h par jour, 5 jours par semaine. Je devais couper les fruits, étiqueter les pots de confiture et les livrer de temps en temps. D’habitude, Mélanie et Thomas embauchent deux workawayers, donc vous ne vous sentirez jamais seuls et vous aurez toujours un partenaire pour voyager dans la région. Moi, j’ai noué une relation très étroite avec ma collègue américaine.
Chazay se trouve près de Lyon, qu’on peut rejoindre facilement avec des cars pour quelques sous. Ils passent souvent.

During our workdays, we had wonderful conversations, many tastings, and some French lessons to help me progress, with a break for some of Thomas' delicious cooking for lunch. When I arrived in Chazay I was very sick with high fever, and also a bit nervous about becoming part of an (at that point) unknown family. I found it very hard to speak French 24/7, too. And so, the first days weren't easy for me. However the family
… read more welcomed me very warmly from the first second I walked into their house. They took great care of me, were always patient and enthusiastic, booked me a doctors appointment and even gave me a room in their house (instead of the caravan) because it was extremely hot and the house was cooler and more comfortable.
Mélanie and Thomas are very relaxed people, who are happy to share their home and (plentiful!) food with you. Their two little girls are very energetic and they love to talk and show you things, which I needed to get used to in the beginning, because I'm used to live on my own very quietly, but ended up loving since they bring so much life and excitement to your day.
When it comes to the work, it's pretty straight forward and not very tiring. I worked from 8:30 in the mornings until lunch time and then another 2 or 2,5 hours in the afternoon. The tasks in summer mainly include cutting fruits and vegetables to freeze them for winter. Occasionally I also put labels on jars of jam, and one weekend we went to a nearby local festival to sell ice creams. I really loved that trip!
Since, as an office worker, I'm not really used to work with my hands, I couldn't work as fast as Mélanie can (she peels tomatoes faster than lightning!) but for sure practice helps a lot and I was always assisted very kindly and got a very honest merci each and every evening. I really appreciated that!
The family tries their best to include you in everything they do, from eating all together to going on little trips to nearby places, swimming in the river, or even arranging sleepovers with one of their friends while travelling around the region in the weekend.
So all in all, I had an amazing stay and I would definitely recommend this Workaway. I have had lot's of opportunities to speak French, never cut so many onions and courgettes in my life, ate heaps of amazing home made sorbet, had many good laughs and felt very welcome and at ease. … read more swimming in the nearby river, and took me to see some of the most beautiful villages in the region. The work, too, was perfectly suited to explore this part of France: Summer for Mélanie and Thomas not only means a lot of fruit that needs to be cut and frozen for the winter, but also a variety of different markets and 'ruches' (like a market, but ordered and prepaid online) where you can help them set up the booth and sell their products. This type of work allowed me to see at least one new village every week, as well as train my conversational French.
However, Mélanie and Thomas were also happy to let me spend my time alone - time in which I was able to discover all the different sides of the wonderful city of Lyon which (by bus) is only around 40minutes away. To explore the landscape that is more close-by, Mélanie offered to lend me her bike, which also granted me a way to make independent visits to the neighbouring villages or the supermarket.
To me, it really was a perfect balance between working and enjoying our time together, and (be that on my own or with the family) exploring a part of France I had never been to.
