Corona update 12 March 2021:
People entering in Peru do not need to go in quarentine anymore! You do need a negative PCR test to enter the country. Furthermore facemasks are obligatory and we have a 10pm curfew, but restaurants and shops etc. are open like normal.
So in case you are interested in coming to us it is possible! just get in touch with us and we are happy to answer any of your questions.
We are an officially registered asociation dedicated to rescuing streetdogs which are sick, hurt or abandoned. We have a dogshelter in Huanchaquito where we take care of the rescued dogs until we find them a home.
We are 100% dependend on the help of volunteers and donations.
The asociation is runned by Marjolein (The Netherlands). Volunteering with us will give you an amazing and very rewarding experience. Every morning volunteers go to the dogshelter (7 min bus) where they take care of the dogs, play with them, walk them, feed them and clean the terrain. We are improving the shelter whenever we have the funds. So handy volunteers are also more then welcome.
Around noon - 1 pm we go back to Huanchaco.
Around 4 pm 2 persons go back to the shelter for preparing the dogs for the night. this means some dogs get a second meal and some dogs need to be locked in for the night. the water will be checked etc. and ofcourse some cuddling needs to be done! not all volunteers are needed for this. this is a 2 person job, but everyone is welcome to join. Back in huanchaco around 5.00/5.30 pm.
Besides this volunteers can help with newly rescued/sick dogs, at time you can see the veterinarian in action and help with fundraising activities. There is never a boring day:-)!
if you are not stuck to a travel schedule and have plenty of time and are interested in taking on more responsibility and getting proper work experience working with dogs, the position of dogshelter manager could be an option for you. this is for a minimum of 3 months. you would get compensated for the days you work (free stay). the function will only be giving to volunteers that first prove themselves in a month of volunteering. duties would involve training volunteers, taking care of the dogs (including medical attention like administering meds and cleaning wounds if needed) and report back to the owner and managing day to day routine at the shelter.
We also have a need for volunteers with veterinarian experience to help us take care of our dogs who often need medical care. besides this we can offer you a placement in an animal hospital in Trujillo where you will be able to assist the vets in their daily work. this would be in the hours outside of the shelter.
Besides the help in the dogshelter we organize fundraisers (karaoke evenings for example) to raise money for dogfood, medical expenses, construction etc. You will also be helping with the organization and on the evening itself. its always fun!
Volunteers will have plenty of time to enjoy beautifull Huanchaco, go out and go surfing!
We ask for a minimal commitment of 3 weeks. reason is that every volunteer needs to be taught, things explained and be guided. any shorter then this is for us not feasible.
To be qualified as a volunteer you must be minimally 18 years old (or have a adult chaperone you), you must be a real animal lover, you must feel committed to the cause and you must feel confortable around dogs.
This workaway is not the right job for travelers who are just looking for any job to extend their travelling.

Helping in a dogshelter is very rewarding. The dogs need people around them and you will soon fall in love with many of them. You will learn how life for dogs is in peru and how things here are so different.
A shelter in Peru is a lot different from animal shelters in developed countries where they often are put in cages. With us the dogs live together. We have to do with a minimum of facilities but if you love dogs you will find it only so much more rewarding to see how your presence is making such a difference.
you get to know the local vet and see him in action. if interested and with the right experience you can even help out in the animal hospital.
At the dogshelter:
- help in the dogshelter in the mornings and/or afternoons (depending on the season we change feeding hours from mornings to afternoons) : changing the water, cleaning, feeding, walking dogs, socialiazing with the dogs
- in case of dog rescues help out
- if qualified and interested see the veterinarian in action
- help with fundraising activities
For veterinarian students we also have a position to take care of the 50+ dogs in the shelter with the local vet, combined with working at an animal hospital in Trujillo. If you would like to combine this or you only would like to work with the dogs in the shelter is up to you! The dogs in the shelter need a lot of medical care and veterinarian students therefore are more then welcome!
We have available a very nice and confortable volunteer appartment in the center of Huanchaco where 7 volunteers can stay. there are 3 rooms with 7 beds in total. There is hot water, electricity and wifi. its located about 100 meters from the beach.
Huanchaco is a beautifull surftown. In your free time you can take surflessons or go surfing. If you would like to improve your spanish there are some good spanish teachers here.
If you like to go out in the weekends there are some nice bars. If you like to go to the city Trujillo is just a 20 minute busride from here. And besides all of this there are some beautifull archeology sites to be visited. But be carefull because Huanchaco is known as a place where travellers tend to stay longer then planned:-)!
