I had a wonderful time in Carcassone doing a 12-day workaway with Alix. Carcassone is a great city and Alix’s home is a short walk to the downtown area. Some of the things I enjoyed doing while there included strolling around the downtown area, visiting the art museum, walking the path of the canal (very close to her home), and climbing the bell
… read more tower (great views!). I also really enjoyed regular walks to the Old Bridge (about 30 minutes) which leads to La Cité—an old walled village from the Middle Ages, now full of cute shops and restaurants.
My workaway work consisted of gardening (pulling weeds, raking leaves, cleaning gutters, etc.) and doing some deep cleaning in the home (kitchen cabinets, glass doors, floors, bathroom, furniture, baseboards.) The work was generally 4 1/2-5 hours a day. (On a few days, we spent some work time on English lessons as I’m an English teacher in the States.) We did have an issue arise regarding differing expectations regarding the work hours, perhaps due to the fact that I was Alix’s first Workawayer. For example, while Alix originally posted about working 4-5 hours 5 days a week, when I arrived she wanted to change it to working 4-5 hours 6 days a week instead; I informed her that her original posting of five days a week was more in line with the typical Workaway schedule. After some discussion, we were able to agree on a schedule that worked for both of us. For future Workawayers, I would suggest that they discuss specifics regarding the work schedule before arriving to avoid any differing expectations. Also, if your goal is to explore the city, seven days in Carcassonne would probably be enough time to do that.
Alex’s home is comfortable and the bedroom I stayed in was cute and cozy. Also, the great location of Alex’s home to the downtown makes it so convenient for exploring the city. Alix was very kind to pick me up from the train station near her home, and one day she also took me to an Orange phone store close to her house so I could get a SIM card for my phone during my stay. Alix and I have some different food preferences, so I bought a little of my own food for some meals and that worked out fine. One night we went to the cinema together, and my last day there we had lunch together at a restaurant in La Cité, eating the specialty of the region called cassoulet. Overall, my stay in Carcassonne with Alix was enjoyable and a great way to see a pretty French city and learn more about French culture.Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.
