We are a little family who travelled the world a lot. We live in a farm in central Portugal. We have a non-for-profit association to promote good practices in agriculture and health. We are certified organic since 2020, we use permaculture as much as we can, and we try to use mostly mechanic tools. We are surrounded by a little paradise ! We have olive trees, vineyards and many other fruit trees. We grow our personal veggie garden and medicinal herbs garden for our own use (we are originally alternative medicine practitioners). We are finishing building a passive house with timber frame and straw bales. We also have lovely animals!

    Kultureller Austausch und Lernmöglichkeiten

    With us, you will :
    - learn how to take care of organic vegetable garden, medicinal garden and orchard, using the principles of permaculture.
    - learn how to care for farm animals
    - learn how to do eco-construction
    - get introduced to food and energy self-sufficiency
You will eat the products of our land while enjoying a magnificent environment in a semi-mountainous rural area of this beautiful and endearing country that is Portugal!
Local people here are authentic: quite straighforward and hospitable.
In the village there is a café/bar, where French can be spoken. It is open every day until 11pm, there is wifi, billiards, table football and darts.
For shopping, you just have to go to Trancoso (10 minutes drive) where there are grocery shops and supermarkets.
In the surrounding area, it is possible to go for a few walks or hikes on the trails, but most of the land around is privately owned.
At weekends you will have plenty of time for yourself! We encourage you to go
explore the surroundings. There is a lot to see in Portugal including in our region:
    - The Serra da Estrela, 1 hour away, where you can do many mountain hikes.
    - The beach at 1h30 (Aveiro, in particular) or 2 hours (the dunes of Sao Jacinto)
    - Numerous river beaches, waterfalls, and even a small lake 25 minutes away, where you can swim in the summer.
    - The small towns of Trancoso, Marialva and Meda a 10 to 20 - minute drive away, with their medieval forts and festivals (medieval festival, chestnut festival, etc.).
    - The town of Guarda, 40 minutes away, with its old town, cathedral, museums...
    - The Douro valley, 1 hour drive (and 1h30 to Pinhao, on a river bank), famous for its fine wines.
    - The city of Porto, 2 hours away
    - Lisbon, 4 hours away.
There are daily buses to these cities, and the train is direct to Lisbon (leaving from Vila Franca das Naves, a larger neighbouring village).
The Spanish border is 1 hour away, and Madrid is 4 hours away.

    - Type of help :

Our non-profit farm is certified organic, and we do not use any non-natural agricultural inputs on our land. We put into practice the principles of permaculture, using mechanical tools whenever we can.
We try to diversify the tasks as much as possible, to avoid monotony. That being said, it is possible that the same task or objective last several days (for example, picking olives or pruning trees). We are subject to the constraints of the agricultural calendar and the seasons, so we cannot adapt the help to everyone's wishes. Similarly, it is not possible to choose which tasks you will be assigned, unless there are several tasks and several volunteers at the same time; in this case, we can try to distribute them fairly over time.

Please note that work is mostly physical and sometimes even difficult. Like other farm workers, we are outdoors most of the time, despite the heat, cold, rain and wind. Here is a non-exhaustive list of possible tasks:
    - Gardening (soil preparation, sowing, transplanting, maintenance, watering, weeding, treatment/prevention of diseases, harvesting, application of mulch or manure, tree pruning, etc.),
    - Animal care (feeding, milking, etc.),
    - Construction, renovation and maintenance (of greenhouses, shelters, fences, houses, etc.),
    - Maintenance of water points and dry toilets,
    - Processing of farm products (preserving, dehydration, cheese-making, etc.),
    - Cooking, storage and reorganisation of the different areas,
    - Wood cutting,
    - Participation in some events.

We can also occasionally ask you to take part in a task at another person's home in the village.

    - Number of helping hours :

Minimum of 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. If you are in the process of carrying out a task that is almost finished, we would be grateful if you could finish it and not leave everything unfinished. Prior to the end of your task, you are also asked to take the time to clean and store all tools and equipment; these are expensive and you are responsible for using them!
Schedules may vary according to needs and the climate (for example, in summer, the heat makes it impossible to help outside between noon and 4pm). And if it rains heavily one day, help may be postponed to another time, if indeed there's an urgent outdoor help to be made. Otherwise, indoor help can be envisaged (cleaning and tidying, DIY, cooking, preparing preserves, etc.).

In general, we start to work at 9pm. During the olive-picking season, the day starts at 8 am.
In summer we work mornings and evenings, to avoid the heat.
We ask for a minimum of 2 weeks attendance. We also have an open door to those who intend to join on the long-term! Although we are not too fan of big communities, we'd love to welcome for good more passionate and like-minded people !

    - Health and safety :

We will never ask you to do help that is dangerous to your physical integrity, and you always have the right to refuse help if you feel uncomfortable. However, we often use use tools (gardening, DIY) and of course, accident is a potential risk. For this reason, before coming you will have to either subscribe to a private travel insurance or apply for the European social security card (if you are European), which is recognised here in all public hospitals. This card can be obtained within a minimum of one month.
We cannot be considered as responsible in the event of an accident.

    Unterkunft

Several possibilities are offered for the accomodation (depending on the places available): in an independent room or studio (which can be shared), in the house with us, or camping (you can bring your own equipment or we can lend it to you, if necessary). We do not always have access to wifi. There is a good network throughout the area for mobile phones. The village café also has good wifi.
The winter is cold and can be humid; there is heating system (wood stove or auxiliary heating) but we avoid overheating, especially we do not heat throughout the day. So make sure you bring warm indoor clothes.
In summer it gets very hot (up to 38°C) but also very dry. We don't have any air-conditioning, but inside our housesit is much cooler. If you are in a tent, the night should not be uncomfortable as night temperatures are always cooler.
Showers and toilets can be outside. The toilets are compost toilets, i.e. without water and with sawdust. Everyone is responsible in taking to the compost box the full bucket!
There is a private or communal kitchen / living room.
Everybody participates in housecleaning and common areas: once a week, we all do a big cleaning together.
Laundry is done at the weekends and we give you access to a washing machine (and a thread to hang your clothes up).
Meals are all ovo-lacto-vegetarian (we don't buy industrial milk or butter but we may have home-made milk and goat cheese). We try to use organic, local, seasonal products as much as possible, and we always cook fresh, healthy and yummy food from our garden !
Breakfasts are eaten separately (we provide bread or oatmeal, jam, fruits, coffee/tea..).
On working days, lunch will either be ready (if there are leftovers from the day before) or prepared together with you (in which case it will be a quick and easy-to-make meal, so that we can start on time in the afternoon). We request for your help in the kitchen, including tidying up.
Meals on weekends are generally cooked by yourselves, to give everyone the opportunity to regain their personal space. We provide you all the foods. Please note that we do not accept meat or fish products at our place; please do not bring any from outside. Also, we ask you not to bring food products that generate too much waste.
If you have any allergies or intolerances, please let us know in advance.

    General rules:

The following products are not accepted:
    - chemical or non-biodegradable products, including hygiene products (soap, shampoo, washing powder, etc.). We provide you with home-made laundry. Please bring your own biodegradable soap, in order to not contaminate our underwater...
    - alcohol, drugs of all kinds, meat and fish. Smokers are required not to smoke on the land because of the risk of accidental fires, very common in Portugal. They can't either smoke in the house. The only place where it is tolerated is on the terrace, as long as you manage and keep your own cigarette butts.
In the same way, we appreciate a behavior of responsible adults who respect each other and apply the principles of non-violent communication. Intolerance and all forms of discrimination of any kind have no place among us. Any word or attitude related to this will lead us to ask you to leave.
We also need some privacy as a family, therefore, we ask you to respect our space (as we will respect yours) and in particular to knock on the door before entering our house!
We accept families with children, as long as they are already autonomous, and respectful of the setting, the rules of the farm and our environment. We will take the liberty of reminding them of the instructions and rules, as we do with our own children, if we feel the need.
We accept volunteers with their dogs, as long as they are sociable and well-balanced, and that they get on well with other dogs and humans in general.
Please contact us for other animals.
If you are leaving for the day or for a full weekend, you are responsible for your own meals, but we can provide you with some garden products!
