In northern Norway, just above the Arctic Circle, we have a small privatly owned island with old wooden boats, huts and spectacular scenery. The 21,5 meter wooden whalingship is now a living museum and this is also where you will be staying and organizing yourself. It is home port and this is also where Polar Explorer Børge has his private hideaway-cabin. This is a real adventure playground, surrounded by mountains and the sea, where kayaking, climbing, fishing, trekking and snorkeling are among the activities we offer to our guests and also volunteers in their spare time. We are looking for volunteers with high work ethics who can multitask and contribute to all the bits and pieces needed to be done on a private island/boat, and most of all who have the ability to always greet every day with a smile. We produce and forage some of our own food and our long term goal is to be totally self-sufficient. In addition to the owner Børge, the island habitated by the Dane (31) & Astrid (26) who will greet you onboard and organize your stay.
You will learn a lot through the variety of tasks we need to cover. We always focus on building great teams and you will meet a lot of great people. We were once part of the largest trading post in northern Norway, (established in 1690) and the coastal culture is a big part of our history. This is the area where Nobel price winner in literature, Knut Hamsund, grew up and found the inspiration to write some of his most famous novels. A visit to the Hamsun center is a must.
This is a beautiful area where you can explore various nature and beautiful breathtaking scenery.
Our priorities this season is to get help for in the house and garden:
- A mix of everything that is normally done on a farm
- Boat-driving (if you have an international or Norwegian boat certificate)
We are looking for volunteers who can help out with all the bits and pieces needed in a house, garden and farm for private activity. What makes us special is that we are surrounded by the sea. Experience with carpentry will be a bonus. The work is hard and will be everything from helping, painting, cleaning, manual help, eco-farming, boat-driving, fishing, taking care of our outdoor equipment like kayaks, boats, and climbing gear, go trekking or kayaking, (depending on skill-level).
We try to be as self-sufficient as possible, we fish, have wild sheep, chickens will come this year, we have a kitchen garden for our restaurant. If you can meet every day with a big smile, are friendly, honest and hard working, and interested in outdoor life, please feel free to contact us. Longer stays 3-6 months will be preferred. If you request a stay for under 1 moth you won't be taken into consideration - we highly value to have a stable team that has a chance to get to know us, the place and each other. This has always contributed to a calm and friendly atmosphere, and not too much in-and-out.
Stay mainly onboard the whaling boat (or in private house). It could be two persons per unit, or loft for 3-4 persons. You probably need to share room with another person. Private rooms are normally reserved for couples or volunteers that stays for 2 months or more and prefer privacy. Shower and toilet are in the same building or just next door.
In your spare time it's possible to use our facilities to kayak, fish, climb or go trekking. This is a good place to be and we want you to leave with good memories. We are situated above the Arctic Circle with northern lights in the winter and midnight sun in the summer. It is easy to get here from Oslo to Bodoe and then a short ferry ride to Steigen.
