Local NGO seeking volunteers to teach English to disadvantaged youths, Kandal, Cambodia

  Beschreibung

  This is an amazing opportunity to volunteer and make a real meaningful difference to disadvantaged youths’ lives.
  
  Started in 2000, this local NGO aims to help youth who have had dropped out of school, or can't afford to pay public school costs, to learn English.
  
  They have the opportunity to live all together with the teachers and volunteers in a safe, clean and caring environment.
  Some students who can afford to pay, give a small contribution towards food, but the majority of the students do not pay anything at all.
  
  They all have a place to stay in the students dorms, 3 meals a day and access to an alternative educational program based on human values, English communication and positive character development. They learn a lot about community life, solidarity, respect, environmental awareness, etc... They are taught daily tasks, as well, such as cleaning, cooking, repairing, building, etc...
  
  Through learning English, students will be able to gain better employment outcomes and have brighter futures, which is a great opportunity for most of the children who come from disadvantaged areas.
  
  The NGO is now looking for more English speaking volunteers to teach English to the students and be part of this beautiful project!

  Arbeit

  English Speaking volunteers are welcome to join and contribute in anyway they can.
  
  We are looking for open-minded, motivated, autonomous, creative and caring people to help us with our project. People who are patient, compassionate, honest, committed and have a good team spirit are very welcome to join and help us inspire our students (12 - 28 years old).
  
  Experience in teaching English is a plus but not absolutely necessary, as long as your English level is good. Our local teachers can help you prepare the classes.
  
  Besides teaching classes, we need help in conversational English practice, general maintenance ( gardening and building skills can be useful) and promotion of the project on the local and international scene (the NGO isn't well-known and any experience in NGO's administration/paperwork/marketing is welcome).
  
  Also, just spending a good time with the students during their daily routine, playing games with them sometimes and chatting, help a lot! They are always very happy to be able to interact with foreigners, as most of them have never travelled abroad and had never met any travellers before our first volunteers came.
  
  We are open to any kind of new ideas and projects!
  
  Priority is given to volunteers who can stay for a longer period of time, as we believe it is better for our students.

  Unterkunft

  Here at the school, things are very basic. Students and teachers usually sleep on the wooden floor in dorms.
  
  For the volunteers, we can offer a mattress in a room (private or to be shared with other volunteers, if necessary), pillows and blankets (if you have sheets or sleeping bags, you are welcome to bring them).
  
  Please try to let us know your date of arrival in advance, so that we can get organized!
  
  We all share the same food - 3 simple meals a day - with the students and teachers.

  During their time off, helpers can go visit student's homes, the nearby pagoda, the village's local market, play football, volleyball and other games with the students and teachers, visit other places in Cambodia, etc...
  The school is located 20km away from Phnom Penh. You can reach it by Uber ( about 10 $), tuk-tuk ( between 10 and 25$ depending on your bargaining skills ^^) or taking the public bus n.1 until the terminus Oknha Souy Sophan Bus Terminal (1500 KMR) then hitch hike or take a tuk tuk
