Hi, i'm Joe,
I'm 30 years old and from a small country-side village, in South-East England, which you won't have heard of. 5 years ago I sold everything and bought a one way ticket to Costa Rica, setting flight across the Atlantic with a small website design business. The 'pura vida' spirit caught my heart and I spent around a year enjoying Central America, before flying over to Colombia, where the wild soul of the Sierra Nevada inspired me to settle down and realize one of my dreams of living close to nature.
THE PROJECT(S)
Recently I acquired a small but beautiful spot of land in a village called Minca, nestled a few hundred meters above sea-level, 20-30 minutes drive from the hustle-bustle seaside town of Santa Marta. At 700m altitude, Minca is perched comfortably on the edge the Sierra Nevada, in an area which boasts one of the most spectacular and diverse selection of flora and fauna in the world.
I'm relatively new to permaculture and would be grateful for anything people can teach me. Right now there are about 30 cocoa (cocoa) trees, which I are suffering from disease, and i'd really like to clean them up. They sometimes have fruit, but can be sporadic. Recently i've been working on making some good compost, preparing for chickens, and planting some new fruit trees, among other things. I have a number of other projects in mind for near future, including constructing a compost toilet and platforms for tents from materials on-site. I'm also playing with ideas to set up a local aid project, using the cacao, and would be grateful for anyone with experience or just time and motivation to help make it happen.
THE FINCITA
The plot is located around 20 minutes leisurely stroll from the village itself and perched on top of a awe-inspiring, semi-private waterfall. Nothing can be guaranteed at any one time, but so far i've seen howler monkeys, rainbow-beaked toucans, spider monkeys, giant butterflies, miniature hummingbirds (smaller than a little finger!), big cats (i've not seen one, but there have been a number of claimed sightings, over the years), possums, anteaters, red-headed woodpeckers and of course a colorful array of frogs and insects.
Project could be ideal for a couple or introvert, since the farm is slightly isolated and I am currently studying social psychology whilst maintaining a small web-design business, so I tend to spend a fair amount of time in cyber-land.
Hope speak soon,
Joe
