Welcome to our Foundation!
Where is our foundation about?
Leaf is focusing on capacity building and enhancing lactation to promote exclusive breastfeeding in Ghana.
The foundation is set up by Albertine (a Dutch nurse and IBCLC lactation consultant).
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she is working remotely from the Netherlands and visiting Ghana on a regular basis.
What are we doing?
Our main focus is currently a breastfeeding program we have developed for the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). But the fieldwork is still on hold because of the ongoing pandemic. Therefore we are looking into digital options to keep helping the babies receiving breastmilk for a healthy start in their tiny lives.
We got a virtual clinic where mothers can reach out for help in case they are in need of breastfeeding support.
But since we also would like to upgrade the knowledge and skills of health workers we are now developing support and educational program for them as well.
Where are we looking for?
A helping hand to update our website and social media profiles, ideally with nice pictures and videos of our projects.
So if you're creative and willing to join us in the field to collect these pictures and videos, able to edit them and use them in our social media strategy you are most welcome.
Besides that, we are looking for people with some interest in healthcare (especially in breastfeeding) who can help to develop an online platform for health professionals. You don't need to be a health worker yourself perse, you will be working under the direct supervision of Albertine and the needed content is provided.
A helping hand in local and online fundraising is also most welcome.
If you have any experience with that, please come and share it!
When do we need your help?
Throughout the year.
What can we offer?
We'll host you in our house where you'll share the room with a maximum of 1 other workawayer.
It's a 4-bedroom house on a gated compound.
The room will be fully furnished and gas/water/electricity is provided.
If you want to come with someone, it won't be any problem. We can host 2 guests at the time.
Ideally, you're available to work roughly 15 - 20 hours a week and the rest will be free time
to explore the city and country.

You will be working with an international volunteer team. Besides that, you will be sharing the house with the Ghanaians who are staying here. One of them is available for our volunteers and workawayers to let them feel at home and be a kind of a guide to ensure our workawayers will get to know more about Ghana.
Albertine has been working with a travel agency in Ghana before and also has been hosting international students in Ghana for years and she is surely willing to help out with travel plans based on their interest.
We are keen on the safety of our visitors and therefore sharing some advice as well.
We're ready to introduce you to the Ghanian culture and its habits, especially when it comes to healthcare since that's the field you will explore most during your work. You will see the differences in the way of living and start realizing what your values are. Apart from that you'll make new friends and continued connections to the country.
We would like to learn from you some skills related to online visibility and fundraising.
If you want to explore mother & childcare in Africa - you're at the right place!
Ideally, we're learning from each other - that is what we believe - together we can do more.
Help to further expand our online services and social media presence, ideally with some good pictures and video's of our work. So if you are creative and willing to join us to collect these pictures and videos, able to edit them and use them in our social media strategy you are most welcome.
The main priority, for now, is getting the online platform for health professionals ready so if you are interested to help develop this we can wait to have you around!
Last but not least, if you have experience with fundraising we really appreciate getting us started with that too.

Self compound 4- bedroom house. You'll share the room with a maximum of 1 other volunteer or workawayer.
The room is furnished and gas/water/electricity is provided. You can make use of all common areas in the house like the kitchen, hall, dining area/office, porch, and garden. Food is not included, but you can use the fully equipped kitchen and there are several food joints around in the area at walking distance as well.
For the working hours, we are providing data, but we'll ask for your contribution for the personal use of the wifi.
Our house is about a 5 - 10 minutes drive to get to a bus station to get easy access to other parts of the town. Besides the bus station, there is a big local market. To get to the 'tourist' part of town it will take you about 20 mins by car if there is no traffic. There are uber and similar services available in town, which also make a pick-up from the house available.
Beaches are also close. During free time you can visit the beach or have a drink or meal at one of the many nice spots in and around Accra. There are very active salsa and kizomba communities in town.
With public transport, the Southern part of Ghana is easily accessible and it's safe to travel on your own by daylight.
For trips to the Northern part, we advise you to travel with a recognized company (we do have connections for that).
Since the house is on a compound we don't allow loud music and parties.
Also is the place non-smoking. When you walk outside, please take notice to be dressed properly to respect the culture. (no shorts or skirts above the knee). To wear this at home or at the beach isn't a problem of course.
