I'm Aleksei - founder of the institute, and the person who will welcome you here. I came to Bahia with a background in engineering and visual arts, and a restlessness that only settled when I found this land and understood what it needed. Tatiana, my wife, shares this mission completely - she is as much a part of this place as I am, and her presence shapes the warmth and depth of everything we build here. Together we live on the farm, work on the farm, and are fully invested in what happens here - this is not a project we manage from a distance.

Our small local team keeps the land and institute running day to day, and around us a growing community of volunteers, researchers, artists, and local families has become something genuinely alive. We have full time farm administrator and gardener and part-time house keaper cleaner.

This place is a regenerative institute - we plant native Atlantic Forest trees on degraded land, build open science around that restoration, run artist residencies and community programmes, and work toward a model of ecological and cultural regeneration that can be replicated far beyond our 42 hectares. It is ambitious, it is serious, and it is also full of joy. We are a young institution entering a very old forest, and we intend to remain students of both for a long time. If any part of that speaks to you - come and be part of it.

Living here is an immersion in something much larger than the work itself. You will learn agroforestry by doing it — reading soil, choosing species, understanding how a forest thinks. You will join medicine circles rooted in the Atlantic Forest plant traditions, explore the spirituality that runs deep in Bahian culture, and encounter Capoeira not as a tourist attraction but as a living practice in the communities around us. The sea is close, the waterfalls are real, and the forest holds things that will stay with you long after you leave. Tatiana and I make a point of sharing meals, conversations, and evenings with everyone who comes — you will not be handed a task list and left alone. You become part of our home, part of our table, part of the ongoing argument about how to do this well.

We learn as much as we teach, and we mean that honestly. Our community is international — people arrive carrying knowledge from other forests, other cultures, other ways of restoring land and building meaning — and that exchange is one of the things that makes this place alive. We want to share everything we know about regenerative practice, Atlantic Forest ecology, and community building in Bahia. In return, we want to know what you have seen, what has worked elsewhere, and how you see what we are doing from the outside. If you come with open hands and genuine curiosity, you will leave with friendships, skills, and a deeper relationship to the living world — and we will be richer for having had you here.

🌱 On the Land (Physical & Grounding Tasks)
Agroforestry & Farming: Help with planting, crop care, nursery work, and everyday farm maintenance.
Building & Eco-Projects: Assist with bio-construction and sustainable building.
Science & Nature: Work on ecological monitoring, species documentation, open wiki updates, and educational programs.

Note: If you have a background in biology, ecology, soil science, agroforestry, or plant medicine, that’s fantastic—but a genuine curiosity and willingness to learn matter just as much as credentials.

💻 Inside the Institute (Digital & Operational Tasks)
Media & Marketing: Help us with communications, content creation, photography, video editing, and social media.
Strategy & Growth: Assist with fundraising research, operations, and strategic planning.
Professional Support: We always welcome writers, designers, lawyers, and organizers who can help with legal, administrative, or design tasks.

Whatever your skills, we will make sure your time here produces something worth the effort — for the forest, for the community, and for you.

We offer one clear arrangement, and you simply choose the sleeping setup that suits your rhythm: a private room in our house close to the beach, or camping directly closer to the forest, where we fully provide the tents and all necessary bedding for your comfort. For either choice, the rules are exactly the same: you will help for 5 days a week, 3 hours a day — a maximum of 15 hours a week. In exchange, we provide one main shared meal per day (either lunch or dinner) that we plan, cook, and enjoy together. For your other two daily meals, you buy your own ingredients and use our kitchen freely; local produce in Bahia is fresh, affordable, and excellent, and we will bring you to a big supermarket once a week for a main shop or you can walk to a smaller local shop yourself. Whatever you bring, we will make sure your time here produces something worth the effort — for the forest, for the community, and for you.

(!) P.S. When applying to join us, please describe in detail exactly what you would like to do and what experience (interests, ideas) you bring. Applications without this information will not be considered.

    Unterkunft

Here are the two options for staying with us:

Option 1: The House (Private Room)
You can stay in a private room inside the house where Tatiana and I live. It is close to the beach, equipped with two single beds, and has a private bathroom. This option offers a warm, simple, and comfortable stay with a classic Bahian charm, keeping you close to the sea and the comforts of home.

Option 2: The Farm (Camping at Fazenda)
For a more rustic and wild experience closer to nature, you can camp directly at Fazenda. You will fall asleep to the sounds of the Atlantic Forest and wake up right next to the land you will be working with. We fully provide the tents and all necessary bedding for your comfort. Camping is also the best option if you are looking for a longer stay.

Helping Hours & Food Rules for Both Options:
Regardless of where you sleep, the rules remain exactly the same:

Helping Hours: Maximum of 3 hours a day, 5 days a week (15 hours total per week).
Food Provided: One main shared meal per day (lunch or dinner) that we plan, cook, and eat together.
Your Responsibility: You will cover your other two meals, with full access to our kitchen, appliances, and fridge storage. We will take you to a large supermarket once a week for a big shop, or you can walk to a smaller local shop yourself.

Your days off are yours completely, and this part of Bahia makes it easy to fill them beautifully. The beach is close — Aritaguá sits on a stretch of coastline that still feels unhurried and real. There are waterfalls in the forest within reach, trails through Atlantic Forest that reward anyone willing to walk slowly, and lagoons that feel like they belong to another century. Ilhéus itself is a city with genuine soul — the birthplace of Jorge Amado, whose novels of cacao, the sea, and Bahian life are very much alive here. The historic centre, the cacao farms, the local markets, the music drifting out of open doors in the evening — it is worth wandering without a plan. Capoeira is practiced locally and we can connect you to it. The spiritual life of Bahia — Candomblé, plant medicine circles, the deep traditions of this land — is present and accessible if you come with respect and curiosity. Salvador, one of the most extraordinary cities in Latin America, is a few hours north and absolutely worth a trip for anyone staying two weeks or more.

For transport, Ilhéus has an airport and a bus station, and we will pick you up and drop you off at either — it is about 40 minutes from where we are. Getting around locally is easiest by moto-taxi, which is cheap, cheerful, and very Bahian. We will help you get oriented and make sure you know how to move freely from the first day.
