We are an off-grid, clothing optional, eco-campsite in Montenegro. We open the site to paying visitors and tourists from May - September each year. We welcome a limited number of volunteers during this period to help us run and develop the site.

So who are we? We are Steve & Denise and we emigrated from the UK to Montenegro in 2006 and realised our dream of opening an off-grid, clothing optional campsite and eco project in 2009.

Off grid means that we have no mains electricity, sewage or water. We use solar power and a small generator to provide our electricity needs. We have state of the art dry toilets, our water is pumped from or collected by hand from local springs, and all our waste "grey" water is used to irrigate the vegetable and flower gardens. We are passionate but pragmatic about reducing our impact on the environment and reduce, re-use & re-cycle at every opportunity.

Clothing optional means that guests and volunteers are free to choose whether or not they want to wear clothes around the site. There is absolutely no pressure either way. Depending on the weather and time of day/year it is likely there will always be those who choose not to wear clothes. The freedom of choice means that we are a popular destination for those wanting to ease into their first experience of a naturist/nudist environment.

Facilities on site include a fully equipped summer kitchen, with two gas cookers and two small gas powered fridges. We have a barbeque area and fire pit (use of this may be restricted during prolonged dry spells). There are covered and open air eating spaces, shaded outdoor lounge areas and an indoor library and games store. The unisex shower/WC and washroom area is also covered.

Although originally from the UK we have now lived longer in Montenegro than any other place in the UK. We have tried to understand and adapt to local customs, culture and history but in our opinion the more you learn about Montenegro, particularly the conflict that gave rise to the break up of the former Yugoslavia, the less you understand it. We'll happily share our take on it but as seen through the eyes of two immigrants from the UK. We'll leave you to form your own views.

In terms of what you might learn on-site at our camp, we hope you will be inspired by our eco-journey. Particularly how adversity can lead you down new roads. We were not eco warriors when our camp began to evolve. We faced practical problems for which environmentally friendly approaches provided pragmatic solutions. As part of your induction into our team we will give you a detailed tour of our facilities so you understand why we chose these solutions and how they all work. We hope that many of the ideas and systems will make an impression and perhaps be relevant in your own life at some point in the future.

We're often told by guests and volunteers that there is a community atmosphere on-site. We're not entirely sure how this happens but it does. We believe the clothes optional environment is a factor. A chance to interact with people as they really are, no hiding behind designer labels or some false skin. A chance to be yourself. We believe clothes have two primary functions, protection and decoration. We hope you'll learn that, for a lot of the time, we don't need either. We hope you'll learn that there is no such thing as the perfect body and that all bodies have a beauty. We hope you'll gain greater self confidence in yourself as a result. Be sure to let us know if this aspect of living is of interest to you or if you have experienced clothes free living in the past. If you'd rather remain clothed then that's no problem either. Nudity is not central to Camp life, it is almost incidental and most certainly your choice.

We offer 2 types of volunteer opportunities: Short term, for periods of 7-14 days. Medium term, for at least 4 weeks or more. There may be an option to extend both if we all get along. We are an English-speaking site, so a reasonable command of English is important. Nudity is not mandatory for guests or volunteers, but our clothing optional policy means you will need to be comfortable living and working around others who may choose to be clothes free. Other than that – everyone is welcome, solo travellers, groups of friends, mixed or same gender couples.

We ask you to volunteer for 5 hours per day but in practice this may involve a few hours help in the morning before it's too hot, time off after lunch and then help again towards the end of the day when the dog needs to be walked & gardens watered. You may be expected to be 'on duty' in the evenings, helping us with tidying up & being available to help. Some of the work can be quite physically demanding at times, especially in the brutal Montenegrin sun.

Short term volunteers can expect to help us with almost any aspect of running the site. The skills we most need can change as the tourist season unfolds but some things remain constant. The pattern of the day can be very dependent on the weather & number of guests.

We hope you’ll find the following calendar summary helpful.

Early May. The priority is to get the campsite up and running. Everything is packed away for winter and must be brought from storage and set up. A fair bit of lifting, carrying and deep cleaning during this time. It’s also an opportunity to learn about our eco systems as these are brought into operation. It’s fun to watch the site evolve from a relative wilderness to a welcoming camping resort. We like to host 4-6 volunteers during this period. With few guests around there’s a great team spirit & community feel to the place. There’s also work to be done in the organic gardens. Preparing vegetable & flower beds, planting out & potting on seedlings, mowing the grass terraces.

Mid-May to Mid-June. Once the site is up and running focus shifts to special projects. This year there will be dry stone walls to repair, clearing overgrown areas of the grounds and boundaries, painting, maintenance of our irrigation, solar water and power systems.

Mid-June – End Aug. As the temperatures rise and visitor numbers increase, work on most special projects is put on hold. This is the best time to visit us if you are seeking cultural exchange. Last year we enjoyed the company of visitors from 22 countries across the globe. There is still work that needs doing in the gardens and grounds as well as essential maintenenance but largely the day is spent helping us create a sense of community. This means doing your fair share of whatever needs to be done to maintain a welcoming environment for everyone. Our friendly dog, Daisy, will eagerly join you on walks around the local countryside.

Early Sept – We start the process of packing the site away for winter. More lifting and carrying. Depending on the weather, as the site gets less busy, we may embark on special projects.

Longer term volunteers will be hosted for particular skills and have a more focused community building role. E.g. If you love to cook we’d love to hear from you. Likewise, if you’re a videographer, photographer and/or have proven experience in social media marketing we’d welcome any help you can give to help us promote what we do to through our various internet presences. Denise and I like to grab a day or night off-site occasionally, if you’re comfortable with the prospect then we may ask you to caretake the site on our behalf.

Last but not least, you will help us create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our guests. It is a small campsite with a maximum of approximately 20 tent pitches available. We strive to create a sense of community on site but respect the space and privacy of our guests.

In summary, you will live the kind of life we lead.

We can provide a tent and comfortable bed and three meals a day that you'll share with us (and any guests who want to join us). Non-alcoholic drinks are available as and when you want them. Our offer to guests does include the rental of our tents if they need them, so if you can bring your own tent & sleeping bag that would be helpful but not essential. We'll ask that you be part of the on-site team for 5 days a week but we can be flexible about when you get days off. We actively encourage you to go out and explore Montenegro on your days off. It is a beautiful country. There are no real set hours. The day typically starts around 8:00 with breakfast and a team meeting and finishes when you want to go to bed in the evening. At the height of summer the day time temperatures can soar and work slows or stops so you will find you will get opportunities to relax in the shade (or the sun) for periods in the middle of the day.
