For the dates: January 24 - February 6 2026
I need one person to help take care of 7 cats, one young dog, plants in the garden and some baby trees growing up...
The house is in the countryside, in quite a remote place. The closest town is Castelmola, about 8 km far. So this Workaway offer can suit people who are ok in staying alone in a countryside location for the time i will be out. The tasks are very easy and basic: watering plants, walking the dog, feeding cats and the dog, and changing their drinking water every day. The rest of the time volunteers can enjoy their day in a natural environment, with clean air and the view of Etna just in front.
LOCATION: The location is quite remote; there's no public transportation, but I can pick you up at arrival and take you to the bus/train station when you leave, there are families and couples living in the area, so usually you can meet people along the road.
HOUSE: At home there are 6 cats (Rubacuori, Joshu, Piuma, Muezza, Principessa and Pasha) who are free to go in and out, and one young dog, Kokoro. Taking care of energetic puppy Kokoro requires some patience. There are many awesome walks that you can do in the area with Kokoro, who loves walking, running and exploring: i take him for a walk twice every day, in the morning and in the evening, for at least one hour each walk. As you can see on the pictures, the property offers an amazing view on Etna, trees, a hanging chair, a hammock and plenty of peace, and at home there's an excellent and stable internet satellite connection. We use a compost toilet in the bathroom: it has no flush and requires some care and attention but it is easy to use
EXPERIENCE: This workaway is for you if you enjoy countryside's stillness, if you love spending time in nature, if you feel like you don't need social events or a lot of social interaction during your stay, and if you are willing to commit taking care of the animals as well as the place. In addition to taking care of the pets, I expect the volunteers to also contribute by helping to keep the house clean with basic tasks such as sweeping the floor, cleaning the stove and keeping the place tidy
Taormina is the most popular town around the area. A very beautiful village on the east coast of Sicily, about midway between Messina and Catania, and very popular tourist destination since the 19th century. The village is perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. Besides the ancient Greek theatre, it has many old churches, lively bars, fine restaurants, and antique shops. Taormina is approximately a forty-five minute drive away from Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna.

The main benefit is the opportunity to stay for free in an area where accommodation is usually very expensive. Also, staying close to Taormina is a good opportunity to visit places near by, like Catania, Forza D'Agrò, Savoca, and spend some time on awesome beaches. Taormina is also a very interesting town from the historical and cultural viewpoint, a place where it is possible to enjoy beautiful art and architecture. The area also offers nice walks in an amazing landscape.

The help required from volunteers is very simple, but requires care: feeding the cats focusing on some specifications that I will give at the beginning of the stay or before, if required. And watering garden and growing plants

Possibility to use the e-bike to visit Taormina and the beautiful surroundings: like the charming Isola Bella and the small "fairy town" of Castelmola. It is also possible to visit the wonderful historical centres of Forza d'Agrò and Savoca, where some scenes of the Godfather movie were shot.

No pets: my cats become very upset when other cats are in the house, and since a few months there's already a young dog that i am training, therefore living all together is already a challenge. So, more pets would be a problem, and it could also be dangerous if you have a cat, who could be scared and escape.

Kokoro (2 Jahren)
Kokoro loves exploring and running, so his favorite part of the day is when he can go out to walk. He loves babies and kids, he also loves to meet other dogs and play with them, as he is very playful and joyful
Mini (1 Jahr)
Mini is the new entry, she fears nothing, and sometimes she doesn't come home for days. She is very curious and has a very soft fur. She likes to sleep near Kokoro, the dog, as she probably feels safer, because sometimes Principessa attacks her
Pasha
Pasha arrived from the surrounding countryside, and he was super wild when he started to stay around the house. Now he loves cuddles so much that he always asks for more. When it comes to food he tends to eat a bit too much, he becomes very vocal, and begs a lot for it. He is big and strong, and since he has not much control on his energy, usually other cats don't enjoy playing with him
Principessa (4 Jahren)
Principessa is the daughter of Muezza, she is quite big and strong, and wild too. She has the loudest purr of the house and loves her mum more than anything else. But she has a difficult relationship with Piuma, but even more difficult with Mini, the last arrived kitty
Muezza
Muezza is a sweet small mama cat, her daughter is Principessa. She is much sensitive, so she doesn't like too much cuddle, but she loves to stay on top of the bed just purring. She is is the best hunter, and is crazy for the two brothers, Joshu and Piuma: she loves them as if they were her babies
Piuma (4 Jahren)
Piuma is quite shy but very sweet and delicate, he's pure kindness. He will wait until all other cats have their food before he gets to his bowl. He is quite small and especially light so he can jump very high and long. Piuma has an allergy that makes him suffer in Spring and Summer, he has his special unique quirks and rituals that you will learn here, and sometimes he has a hard time with Principessa who may become a bit aggressive to him. Piuma is Joshu's brother
Joshu (4 Jahren)
Joshu is a very friendly and curious cat, very sweet, he will want to meet and get to know you. Some times he just meows to be cuddled, he likes to sit on your lap. He also loves Kokoro the dog: when we come back from the walk Joshu always comes to welcome and rubs on Kokoro. He is Piuma's brother
Rubacuori (7 Jahren)
She's the sweetest cat with humans, and she likes men especially ....but she's afraid of all other cats, so she only comes to eat in the morning, and soon after she escapes to the fields. She loves to stay in nature, and she may join you on the walk with Kokoro the dog. But if it's too hot she may get tired very soon.
