Beschreibung
We are an alternative school located in the upper northeast of Thailand, 700 km away from Bangkok and 80 km from the Mekong River. The school is on the campus of a university. We currently enroll 275 students in the kindergarten through secondary grades. We believe in providing students with a positive and effective learning environment where they enjoy learning through project-based activities, outdoor activities and fieldwork, soft-skill-enhanced activities, cross-cultural programs, etc.

The school and parents have worked closely to sustain this program, and we have seen wonderful impacts on our students, parents, and teachers.

We are excited to collaborate with you because we both value meaningful learning and living. You will have a memorable experience as a volunteer teacher and community member.

The main feature here is the academic experience, but you will be a part of our school's active community as well. For example, trips over the weekends to nearby cities, hiking, attending meditation sessions, and craft or cultural workshops. Our city is well-known as one of the world's natural indigo cities.

I was keen to experience authentic Thai culture in an area of Thailand that is not heavily influenced by tourism. Sakon Nakhon was perfect for this. It is a beautiful town steeped in tradition, and as soon as you arrive, it is clear that you are in a place that is adored by its locals. It was amazing to be somewhere so genuine. I learned so much about the culture - from family life to how the Thai monks live. I also happened to be there during quite a few national holidays, such as Mothers Day and the King’s birthday. It was really eye-opening to be there during such special holidays, as I really learned just how much the Thai respect and celebrate such occasions.

The school itself was lovely; the environment that the teachers and parents have created for the children is so special. This particular school focuses on bringing creativity and more of a free-spirited environment for the children to learn in, and it definitely shows! I was surrounded by so many smiles and laughter from day one. It is clear to see that the children love being there. I spent my mornings and lunch times at the kindergarten and then headed over to the primary school in the afternoons to assist with the English classes, where I was able to help the children learn, which was very enjoyable. The little ones in the kindergarten did not speak any English but I loved being able to run around with them and be expressive! All the children were an absolute joy to work with, and always so curious and excited to see me and practice their English.

I was always eating with many families in the evenings and despite having travelled alone, I never felt alone! I was made to feel extremely welcome and I was greeted with such warmth and kindness. So many families took me out to eat and kindly invited me to their homes where I learned more about their lives and interacted with their children. It is important for the families to spend time with the volunteers so they can speak more English and encourage their children to do so. It is such a great exchange as it was perfect to be able to integrate with the locals, make friends and feel at home in a new country whilst also helping them to learn English. It was very overwhelming to be surrounded by such kindness and I know I have made so many friends for life just from one month there. Over the weekends, the families also took me to many places in and around Salon Nakhon and I saw more than I expected in just four weeks! From temples and markets to forests and fruit farms, I was very lucky to see so much.

I would love to return to Sakon Nakhon in the future and I can't thank the parents and teachers enough for a very memorable and fantastic month.

We were met at the airport in Sakon Nakhon by one of the programme organisers and made to feel incredibly welcome immediately. We went for something to eat and discussed the volunteer programme, it’s… read more aims and what our part in it would be. We were immediately at ease and eager to get started.

Our accommodation was excellent, we had our own room in a hotel which was a beautiful five minute walk away from the kindergarden and school. Both the hotel and school are located on a large university campus with lots of green space which came as a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok!

We spent our mornings in the kindergarden helping with English classes and learning by play exercises. The children were a little wary of us at first but soon became very warm and friendly towards us, although their level of English and confidence speaking at such a small age is not high, it was an absolute pleasure to spend time with them! In the afternoons we went over to the primary school and helped out in a variety of different lessons with the students there.

Sakon Nakhon doesn’t have the level of exposure to westerners and native English speakers as many of the more touristy areas of Thailand do, so our main task was to spend time with the teachers, children and their families speaking English and exchanging our culture. We were not responsible for planning or delivering lessons but were instead encouraged to apply ourselves however was appropriate with our skills and to be available to speak to anyone who wished to practice English and learn about our culture, whether they were students, teachers or parents.

The way we viewed our experience in Sakon Nakhon is that the more we put into the project the more we would get out of it. Although we spent more or less five full school days per week in the kindergarden and school this gave us the opportunity to connect with many different children and their parents and led to us being invited for meals and taken on trips on an almost daily basis.

The parents took incredible care of us, we spent time with many different families going for meals, visiting their homes and going on day trips. We were even invited on a camping trip to some local ruins and provided with a tent and camping equipment for the occasion! We can’t stress enough how much of a pleasure it was to spend time with such generous and welcoming people or how much we got out of the experience.

We miss you guys and hopefully we’ll be able to visit again someday!
