April 2020 - We are farming our hearts out and working on renovation projects!! We have now hosted WorkAwayers for several years and love meeting folks from all over the world! One of the best things about WorkAway is sitting around the dinner table learning about the folks that we host :) We are a small farm and are considered an agri-tourism destination as we have a "Healing Spring" on the property. Discovered in 1883 the water from the spring has many curative powers. We have a number of historic, renovated cabins that we rent (like a B&B) on a nightly basis.

We are near many great hiking destinations, Mt. Rogers, Grayson Highlands State Park, Stone Mountain, Doughton Park and the many trails off of the Blue Ridge Parkway that crosses through our part of the state of North Carolina. We are just off of the New River with fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Additionally, the Virginia Creeper Trail, Rocky Knob Park and the Railroad Grade trail offer great biking opportunities. We are just 10 miles from the town of West Jefferson with charming artisan shops, microbreweries, small movie theatre and great restaurants. We are just a short driving distance several larger cities. WorkAwayers need to have their own transportation to get around as we don't have public transportation in the area and you want to be able to go out and about on your own :)

We prefer folks who are looking for a longer term/ seasonal stay, but are open to conversations with folks who are 1st time WorkAwayers and want to "try" it for a couple of weeks or a month.

We raise Belted Galloway cattle, heritage breed pigs and heritage breed chickens (both egg layers and meat chickens). Our cattle is grass fed / pasture raised from conception to slaughter. Our pigs and chickens are pasture raised as well.
We do a considerable amount of jams & jellies and we make artisan soap with water from our Healing Spring for our use.

Our projects have a wide range from farm to construction - but for the remainder of 2019 and into the beginning of 2020, our projects are going to be predominantly construction / remodeling projects. We are looking for folks with painting, carpentry, plumbing and electrical knowledge. We are happy to provide lodging (with utilities) and pay in exchange for help with our construction projects. For the 2020 season, we could use someone to help the housekeeping team and assist the innkeeper with a variety of tasks. This position has a pay component as well.

We are drug free and insist that our Workawayers are as well. We don’t mind the use of tobacco, outside – away from any buildings. A beer after the workday is fine, but this isn't the place for you if you drink to excess. No drama, we get plenty of that from our cows!

We are happy to consider couples, friends traveling together, a family or folks with a dog.

Travelers will experience typical farm duties associated with having cattle, pigs, chickens and a garden along with the opportunity to work on a variety of renovations / construction projects. Host is also a soapmaker and we process jams & jellies made with local produce. Anyone interested in learning about agri-tourism will benefit as we have a cabin rental business in conjunction with the Healing Spring.
