Due to Covid-19, borders of Costa Rica had been closed from mid March to August 1, 2020 for International tourists. However, now Costa Rica has gradually been permitting international tourists, including most all countries and all states in the US starting November 1st, 2020. There are specific protocols and requirements before entering.
Our farm is an animal rescue, rehab and sanctuary. Our doors are open to animals in need. We currently have 6 rescue dogs, two goats, two pigs, a horse, and four cats. Some came off the streets, some were abandoned, others were injured and no longer wanted. We actively seek responsible people to adopt the animals and give them new homes full of love and positive attention.
Although we are primarily and animal rescue and sanctuary, weather and help permitting, we grow organic fruits and vegetables. We always prepare and eat tasty vegan meals, we minimize our impact on the earth, and we enjoy the company of our Costa Rican friends and neighbors. We have run a volunteer program for over 10 years, and have had several hundred people come to work with us!
The property (roughly 3.5 hectares) is covered with many tropical fruit trees, including water apple, mandarin orange, banana (many varieties), guayaba, guanabana, cas, ciamito, lime, coffee and araza. We also put in plant beds with peppers, cilantro, cabbage, tomato, onion, squash, beans, arugula, kale, etc. in the dry season. What we grow is 100% organic.
We lead a healthy vegan lifestyle, and those that stay on the farm eat plant-based (no animal products whatsoever). Those interested in staying should be somewhat like-minded. If you are a smoker, this would not be the place for you. Our minimum stay is three weeks, and the maximum is three months. We are not set up to accommodate those traveling with children or pets.
If you are interested in helping, write us a short message and we will send you a link to our website so you can learn more about our farm and programs. From our site, you will complete the online questionnaire (if traveling with a companion, one from each person). We look forward to hearing from you! Please note: our 6 spaces fill up many months in advance. Inquire early - particularly if you are traveling with a companion.
We are looking for people accustomed to physical activity and working outdoors, willing and eager to work with animals in a very hands-on fashion, and importantly, willing to commit to staying and working for the entire length of time selected.
Best wishes! -- Allan, Patri & all the animals

You will have an opportunity to experience the authentic Costa Rica, as we are not in a touristy region. You will interact with our Costa Rican friends and neighbors, and if you wish, have the opportunity to work in the local elementary school. You will learn about the plight of abandoned, abused and neglected animals, and you will learn how to care for them.
Help Required: 5 hours per day, 5 days per week. Once a week you will do afternoon duties - takes less than an hour, and everyone takes turns doing it once a week. That being said, the animals do not care if it is after hours, your day off or a holiday. And if an animal is in need during these times, we would hope you would be stepping up to help. If you find this contrary to your principles, our program may not be a proper fit.
Daily duties will include animal care (creating dog food, washing animals, providing attention, cleaning of pens, walking dogs, cutting or pulling plants/grass for the pigs, goats and horse), working in gardens (creating plant beds, weeding, planting, harvesting fruit), farm maintenance (clearing trails, canal maintenance, repairing fences, cutting weeds, mixing concrete, making sidewalks), etc. Minimum stay: 3 weeks, maximum stay 12 weeks - possibly longer by invitation after you have been here. We provide a tropical fruit breakfast (mango, papaya, pineapple, banana, etc.) with oats and a hearty lunch on working days. Pasta, rice, garbanzos, lentils, black beans, red beans, and corn flour are provided for you to prepare on your own in the evenings. Organic fruit on the property is always available to harvest and eat at any time.
We offer a free exchange with tent camping (covered tent platform, tent, pad and bag provided) with specific vocational skills as needed and only in the dry season. Other optional inside housing arrangements are available. We tend to fill up months in advance, so inquire in advance. We do have last minute openings from time to time.
On your time off: Hike to the river, the waterfalls, volunteer teaching English at the school, go white water rafting, hang out at the river that borders the farm, do yoga, read, go bird watching, visit La Marta wildlife preserve, visit Volcan Irazu, go to the Caribbean coast, visit the sloth sanctuary, or just hang out in the hammock and do nothing at all! We are on a major bus route, so getting anywhere in the country is relatively easy by catching a bus right outside the gates of the farm.
Our website contains numerous resources that will assist you in planning your stay. Email us to inquire and we will forward the link.
