Vom Workawayer (Workaway-Mitglied) für Host
Thierry is what I would call "non-communicative", as such I don't recommend doing a workaway here.
I came to Thierry's home in Bordeaux excited to work on his cars (because that's something I love to do), and moreso to practice my French with a real French family. Before coming I had already done a workaway for almost a month with someone else,
… read more so I expected something roughly similar (work 4-5 days a week 20-25 hours, they feed you and give you a place to stay), needless to say it was not.
The first week, though I asked multiple times for something to do, I was given nothing. So I stayed at the house all day waiting for him to ask me to do work, wasting my time doing relatively little, it was during this time I realized communication with Thierry via phone was near futile. We had the first few dinners together which I was extremely grateful for, but once the weekend came, I waited home around dinner time, no one communicated to me that I was on my own for dinner so the first night I went without, the second I wised up and got myself some food before the stores closed.
The next week he asked me to pull up all the plants in his garden, I was glad to finally have work and feel I was earning my keep even though it wasn't the car work I was led to believe it would be. My only problem was that I asked for gloves at least three times which he just ignored, I ended up using plastic bags. That took me a couple days, after which I asked if there was more I could do to which he replied there wasn't. I had gotten sick of asking at this point so I stopped. I felt like I was bothering him each time I asked so I figured if he had more for me to do he would tell me. At this point I wasn't going to wait around all day for him not to come home anymore so I just started planning to eat my own dinners that I buy because it's less stressful than trying to guess what nights he'd be feeding me and waiting at home from 3-9pm which is the time he might come home but won't tell you.
For the rest of my stay I just tried to stay out of his and his family's way, I didn't spend much time around the house, I just cleaned up after myself and tried to make my presence unknown. When I saw him I asked if there was stuff to do but there rarely was and I'm quite sure he began to resent me for it, which makes 0 sense because he wouldn't give me anything to do. I asked about this afterwards and he said I needed to take positive initiative, which I suppose meant find my own jobs to do, but he never told me to do that, also if I try and clean his absolute mess of a house I couldn't possibly know where to put all of his stuff, I didn't know exactly what he wanted done to his pool or cars without being told, and if that was his expectation, it was stupid.
At the end he told me his job was taking him to Normandy in 10 days and I had to leave, which was fair, but now I doubt that was true and I think he was just too afraid to tell me he wanted me to leave. I say this because the 4 days before that deadline he told me I had to leave by the next day because I had been in conflict with his daughter (never happened, Nayah was great, and so was Emma). Then I was pretty sure he was just too afraid to say either time he just wanted me gone. Either way he left me a pretty aggressive text message in the morning about leaving two dishes in the sink (which I had ONLY done because I didn't want to wake him by doing them that night as he sleeps above the kitchen with no wall, I had done it 2-3 times before no problems doing them right as I woke up) and being disrespectful of him and his household. That cut me pretty deep as I always do whatever I can to be respectful and no one has ever accused me of being anything but before. In fact the only thing I asked Thierry to do when I came to stay with him is to tell me if I do something he finds disrespectful so I could stop asap.
Theirry, I am so grateful for you welcoming me in your home, but your lack of communication skills and the way you treated me towards the end are not conducive to workaway. If you host people in the future I recommend you work on that.Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

We spent two incredible months in the house of Thierry and they have been one of the most beautiful and enriching experiences of our trip.

We had a comfortable room for us and access to the entire house. Every night we had dinner together and talked about many interesting topics!
Thierry is an open-minded man, very interested in different cultures and will always be willing to help you! He is very cultured and really left us many teachings for our future.
He helped us in everything we need during those months, including job search to continue with our trip.
We spent many nights watching the most incredible series with him, TOUCH, sharing very nice moments!
Hermes, the dog, is beautiful and very affectionate. The girls, Nayah and Emma are lovely, two teenagers with strong and beautiful personalities. We feel them like our sisters!
We exchanged talks in different languages and whenever we had any doubts about French, Thierry did not hesitate to explain it to us while we repeated and repeated trying to imitate the French accent.
Undoubtedly we will miss you, we will not forget you and we are waiting for you in Argentina with open arms! We love you and once again, we thank you for giving us a place in the beautiful Pavic familyDu kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

I came to Thierry, Emma and Nayah (and Hermés) in August 2015 to stay for 2 months. In the end I stayed until the end of March - with just a break of 1 month :-)

Thierry´s house is a place of free spirit and as a workawayer you will be fully integrated in the family and get to know all their friends (all of them uncomplicated and welcoming!). You should like dogs, because Hermés likes to enter the apartment and he is a fellow who likes to be with people, very friendly creature, just always hungry. You shouldn´t be afraid of the power of Teenagers, too, because Emma and Nayah are vivid and straightforward girls with a lot of energy: cooking, music, beauty, flying, and a lot of school-work to be done...Thanks, girls, for offering me to move into a house together ;-) and for taking care of me and teaching me ado-French.!
The house (a very well designed apartment with a huge garage) is placed in the center of Bordeaux so it is easy to make just little trips to the Old Town for a nice café or visit exhibitions. Since Thierry is interested in music and cultural life he will take you to concerts in and around Bordeaux and show you the places to be. He likes to talk English! (But he is a good teacher of French, if needed).
It was a cultural exchange, too, and at some points it turned out that we were quite different...as for my cooking and food I´m not sure if I convinced the french soul....
I had a difficult and bumpy period between November and March. In this period I was very much supported by Thierry and the girls. Thierry is a very reliable person and he supported me in some difficult situations. Thanks again for that!
I enjoyed my stay very much and will stay connected with the Pavics :-)
I would fancy the prospect of seeing the garden and terrace finished .....Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.
