Beate and Andreas were great hosts, and I had a wonderful time getting to know them, their family, and their friends during the month I spent there, and wouldn't hesitate to visit again. Most of the work I did was in the garden, and I had a lot of freedom when it came to which hours I wanted to work. If you enjoy working outside, there will be no problems.
I feel like I made some real friends, and it was also a great opportunity to improve my German speaking skills if that is something you are in search of. Can't wait to see them again :)

The only thing I regret is that I could not stay longer... But it was surely not my last visit in Wendland!

And I also strongly recommend this family to everyone who likes lovely dogs and who wants to hear (and speak) some perfect, clear, nice german.

I spent almost one month last summer, having an unforgettable time. As soon as I came back to Italy, I got sucked up into my chaotic university life, and I forgot to write down my feedback. I am truly sorry! Particularly for not informing all the would-be Workawayers about my jaw-dropping experience in that fairytale place known as Wendland!
The
… read more place: live in a red brick house, quite similar to the typical German “Fachwerkhaus”, all surrounded by fruit trees, blackberry bushes and a little pond just in front of the house. On the sunny days, I laid down on the hammock on the patio, reading a book, and everything felt just right. It is a countryside house, as you would imagine, with a small garden where fresh salad, spinach, green beans grow. Close off to the vegetable garden, there is a chicken yard where I learn the funny habit of the hens of following you and then stopping when you turn around. I lived in a super comfortable guestroom, enjoying the collection of books and DVDs, which Beate and Andreas were more than happy to lend me. I mean, I could go on describing to you the beautiful place where the family lives but, I may stop here and just tell you all that it is indeed a nice break from the chaos, the greyness and the packed apartment to which we are used in the cities.
The people: Since the beginning of my time with them, I truly felt welcomed. On my first day, I arrived late at night due to a train delay but, Andreas was at the train station anyway, waiting to pick me up. Beate and Andreas are a fun young couple, always willing to play some cards game or have a chat while drinking something together. Also, they are inspiring parents raising two kind, clever and independent children, Nicholas and Anneke. I had the most interesting conversations with Beate’s sister Tina, and I also had the pleasure to meet Beate’s parents, a friendly and funny couple. Everyone is unique, but they all share something: they are caring and inspiring people with many hobbies and many stories to tell. Beate and her daughter are gifted piano players, Andreas is a creative engineer always working on something, and Nico is the fastest puzzle-maker I’ve ever met. I mean, it is difficult to be bored living with them: they will always be happy to spend their time with you, just having a chat or watching a film together.
My job: My job there was nothing too hard. I helped Beate cook dinner, vacuumed every two days, and did some simple chores in the kitchen. From time to time, I helped out in the garden picking up the green beans or the raspberries (by the way, Beate makes the most delicious jam I’ve ever eaten). I also helped Andreas, who was working on a new building project in the garden (he was building up a little wooden house from scratch), and it was pure fun! In the end, I really felt I received much more than I possibly gave them with my help.
Why you should go there: Beate and her family are the most caring, inspiring, open-minded people you could possibly meet. And also the most patient people with my German! I sincerely enjoyed my time with them and everything I learned and received. I do have the family and Wendland in my heart! I would also suggest you visit them in the summer, to appreciate the green and warm landscape Wendland can offer in that period of the year.Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

I have nothing but fond memories of my 3 weeks here. It was the perfect place for me, and I think it is the perfect place for anyone who is fairly independent and wants a true north German countryside experience. More specifically:
The language:
Since one of my goals this summer was to immerse myself in the German language, I was very glad to
… read more have a lot of opportunities to practice it here. Beate, Andi, and Karin (Beate's mother who lives next door) all speak English and were able to explain things to me when I did not understand in German. Everyone was very patient with my German, even the kids! After 3 weeks I spoke so much better than when I arrived!
The work:
The work was always fair, flexible and enjoyable (especially since the dogs will follow you around and keep you company). We did a big weeding project on the driveway, and Beate was always very sensitive to making sure the work was never overly strenuous, which I really appreciated. We also did some gardening and I took care of around-the-house cleaning tasks.
Getting around:
If you want to experience the big cities, Wendland might not be for you. It is very quiet here, but the historic villages are quite picturesque and you can ride through the countryside with a bike. Andi was kind enough to let me use his e-bike to get around, which made everything super easy and fast. Since I'm an organist, I biked to a lot of different churches to practice. Andi works in Hamburg, Lüneberg is not far, and there are train stations around so it's also not impossible to take a day-trip somewhere else.
Food:
Everyone was so so so kind, understanding and sensitive to my dietary restrictions. Beate and Andi are both great cooks and it always felt great to be eating food straight out of the garden. They have so many vegetables and fruits, it's wonderful.
Free time:
Since you are in the middle of the countryside, I think that if you come here it is good for you to have something for yourself to do when you're not working or hanging out with the family. I spent a lot of time practicing music and studying German online. So for me, the balance of time between work, "me time" (studying/practicing), and enjoying time with the family was great.
The people:
The family is wonderful. Things here were very calm and simple while I was there. We all just enjoyed the summer days! The kids are fun to hang out with. Beate's parents live next door and they are always very kind and helpful as well. Beate and Andi are both very sensitive to making sure their workawayers are comfortable and have everything they need. Beate's brother and his partner visited for a while, and so did Beate's aunt. It was nice to meet some other members of their family and their way of living was inspiring.
Thank you so much for everything, Beate, Andi, Karl Heinz, Karin, Anneke, and Nico. These are some amazing people in an amazing place.Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

2019:
In 2017 I stayed for a month with the Franzke family, I enjoyed it so much I decided to come back and my original plan of staying for 2 months extended to 10! I felt welcome and at home from the first day Andi and Beate opened their home to me. Staying in this little town was the perfect opportunity to experience true German culture and immerse myself in the language. (Beate is very knowledgeable and helpful in helping you learn German) Their property is gorgeous with an orchard, garden, pond and two very sweet little dogs. The work was managable and the expectations reasonable. I cleaned the house and enjoyed trying out new recipes cooking for the family. There is always something to learn in the garden from Beate or her parents, and if you like working on projects Andi will have plenty to keep you busy (and teach you a few tricks along the way as well). I learned many skills that I hope to use in the future on my own property! Helping take care of the children is simply lots of fun, both of them are very clever and sweet.
If you're looking for a quiet place, close to nature, with amazing people I would 100% recommend Andi and Beate as hosts. Through my experience I've gotten myself a second family.Du kannst nur Workawayer mit aktiver Mitgliedschaft kontaktieren.

Incidentally, it was very surprising that such a young person is fully capable of supervising children, cooking, managing the house, and seeing what tasks have to be done !!
We are very impressed and say THANK YOU, dear Sara!!!
We hope (and we are confident) that we will see you again soon!

I stayed with this wonderful family for around four weeks last May/June. It is so fantastic how three generations live so closely together, and each member of this family is really nice, and they do a lot to make you feel at home. The farm is beautiful and has a huge garden with grass, fruit trees and a small pond. It s so idyllic and peaceful! Göttien is the most charming little village with calm surroundings.
The room I stayed in was also really nice and big, so that couldn't have been better :)
The work I had to do was really simple cleaning and garden work.
Thank you very much for a wonderful work away experience!
