We are both Dutch. We live in Portugal for over 30 years. We've met at the language course for foreigners in Lisbon in 1982. Got married in 1987 and live in Portugal together ever since. In 1994 we moved from Malveira da Serra to the Ribatejo.
We now managed to buy a 'casal' = a group of housings within a plot in Santarém. We would like to turn it into a student’s residence.
The main buildings are fairly new, but weren't painted during the last 8 years,
For all this happy rewarding but somewhat physical work, I can’t count with my husband as he is limited in his mobility.
The place needs outside and interior wall painting, some high pressure cleaning, some infiltration treatment, some arrangements, some bricolage.
Your handy help will be greatly appreciated
We are both fluent in Portuguese, Dutch, German and English. We could teach you some basic vocabulary in Portuguese and some basic verbs. The population around us is entirely Portuguese, warm and welcoming people.
Now in the first stages we would need:
1) Separating and throwing away some stuff left behind.
2) Clean the walls, the patio, surrounds of the Swimmingpool (not usable yet :( ) with a high pressure cleaner.
3) Paint white with white acrylic wall paint on roller.
4) Paint some of the iron fencing and hand rails green and white.
5) Restore fibre pvc panel roof over central patio.
6) Maybe some assistance with other maintenance and bricolage, straighten out some walls.
Santarém, on the banks of the big Tagus River, has a beautiful old inner city centre with a rich history.
. You can find Santarém an hour north of Lisbon with a regular train connection from Lisbon going all the way to Porto.
We are on a high spot with a terrace on high looking over the hillsides of Santarém. The house has about 8 rooms of which 4 are immediately usable. We have hot and warm water showers everywhere. We can cook at home in a ready to use kitchen or grill/bbq in the summer kitchen outside near to the not yet ready swimming pool.
Our location has public transportation at the corner of the street able to take you to either Santarém's central bus or train station.
From Santarém you can visit city's like: Leiria, Tomar or Fátima, or pay a visit to Óbidos, Caldas de Rainha, or the ocean beaches on a day trip..
Your time off, you could spend: to take a walk into the city-centre or go jogging, ride a bike, go to the big aquasplash swimming pool closeby. There are some bars, pubs with music and small talk, nice restaurants too. We use a big self-service restaurant in the direct neighbourhood quit often.
We would appreciate non-smoking habits, we do sometimes drink wine or beer at the table. We eat moderately fish and meat, but appreciate fresh ideas.
