She loves animals and was very curious about Iceland´s geology and history. Unfortunately she just missed the last eruption by days! We are so grateful to have had her to help with animals
… read more and gardening. She made lovely meals for us, organized our fridge and we spend many evenings playing all kinds of games. Leonie got along wonderfully with all members of the family and was 100% reliable around the animals and house. We were able to leave everything in her trusted hands whenever we had to go away for a day. We hope very much that she will return for visits and hopefully she can do some farm sitting again in winter time to see the Northern Lights properly! Thank you for being such a great help, Leonie!

Maria stayed with us over the winter months and it was not an easy winter with snow storms, heavy frost and very challenging weather at times - but she just braved any storm Iceland threw at her with a big smile and never ending enthusiasm! We are very grateful for having her at our place because she is such a wonderful person to have around.
… read more Always kind, always cheerful and so positive! Maria is so much more mature than her young age suggests and for me personally she was a great companion in the everyday duties we have. She was super reliable with the animals and the house and we had so much fun skiing in arctic temperatures. Need to mention that she is an excellent skier and I only saw after her heels down the slope! Her travels to South America were such an inspiration for us since we will probably never make it there ourselves. We thank her from our heart for her wonderful help throughout the three months she stayed with us! Hopefully her travels will bring her back to Iceland some day!

Every member of the family is super kind, fun and smart, even every single animal has their own special character to be remembered. I felt, like I found a second home in Iceland in a very short time! :)
Due to Icelandic weather, you might sometimes have to spend more time in the house (strong winds or really really cold weather) than originally planned, but there`s always something to do – play with the animals, read, have good talks with the family about literally anything. Thanks to Annalo`s book recommendations and playing cards with Ralf and Meike, I didn`t get bored or felt lonely.
We often did small trips to the surrounding sightseeing spots, to forests to walk and hike a little bit or went to swimming pools, which is very refreshing and also means getting to know the Icelandic way of living.
Overall, I feel like I got in touch with the Icelandic culture and their laidback kind of living The weather is very special, can quickly change and cancel plans, but I think, that comes with getting to know the authentic Iceland. Also Meike knows tons of knowledge about geology, culture and the island itself, so you can really understand the country better. I can totally imagine coming back to this beautiful country and this lovely family, either for a visit or for another workaway experience.

Amazing food, conversations on the veranda, relaxing in the hot tub and adventurous riding tours kept me busy besides working in the stable and household. It was nice to have something to do when everybody else in the house is working or studying too.
When I look back at all the pictures I took it almost feels like a dream. In my free time, I even got to borrow the car sometimes so I could explore the area. We did that together as well, which was nice as Meike can tell you a lot about icelandic history and geography. It’s almost like having a private tourist guide 24/7.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this host! It was my first workaway experience and I am super grateful I got to stay with them.

I stayed with Meike and her great family from the beginning of May to the beginning of June and even though it was more than a month, the time seemed way too short. I was supposed to go to another family first, but then decided at the last moment for this family and I think it could not have hit me better. Right from the start, I felt very well

Meike always made sure that everything was fine with me and helped me with everything possible and Anna-Lo did the entertainment for me (thanks again for that :D). In general, we have done a lot together, such as going out to eat, going to the movies, a sightseeing tour or a day ride.
The horses are all very nice and well trained. I was allowed to ride as much as I wanted (with 8 horses you are quite busy). Also I was allowed to ride out alone, but most of the time Meike or Anna-Lo came along.
Meike always motivated me to do something and came up with great ideas when I was bored (going to the swimming pool or just looking at the surroundings on the motorcycle).
The regular work was very simple. Basically, every day it was just feeding the animals and helping out around the house.
The accommodation is fantastic, with private bathroom and very spacious room.
At this workaway you are really treated like part of the family and not just someone who is there to work.
It was very hard to say goodbye and I hope to come back again!

The whole family could teach me a lot about Icelandic history, culture and sagas. Especially Meike could teach me a lot about Icelandic geography and helped me when I was planning a trip through Iceland - she had many insider tips.
