Staying at Thomas house was definitely one of the highlights of my 15 months trip in New Zealand.
I stayed in a super comfortable and modern sleepout right next to the house, with my own bathroom and kitchen, a big TV and air conditioning.
The first weeks i helped Thomas with different things such as gardening, digging, etc. But then we started
… read more the main project, in which we worked most of my stay here. It consisted in a big pond, and i had to bild a retaining wall made of tires. Every weekend Thomas rented a digger to make my job easier, so i could put the clay into the tires to keep them well compacted.
It turns out that Thoms owns a pest control company, and he hired me for a seasonal job for almost 2 months. The job consisted on cutting pines in the countryside, like 30 or 40 km away from Dunedin. Once, i went away for a week with Tom as we worked more far away from the city. We stayed in a very comfortable hotel and all the meals were included! The job itself was a bit hard, we had to walk between 5 and 10km a day and cut little pines, but it was a great experience for sure and definitely would do it again. While i was working in his company (and after that too), i just worked 10 hours a week for the accomodation and bought my own food. So i kept working in the pond project, on very flexible basis. I worked with Tom on Sundays 3 hours (he usually worked on his project on Saturdays, but as i was playing football in a team he decided to rent the digger on Sundays so i could rest properly for my games) and then the rest of the hours during the week i worked whenever i wanted. Thomas and his wife Lucy were the best hosts, great cookers, parents and persons. They invited me to have dinner at their house almost every weekend and had interesting chats. They were curious about how is life in Uruguay and i appreciated it very much. If you are considering staying at Thomas and Lucy, you won't regret it.

Thomas and Luci, their children Teresa and Martin and dog Wally, welcomed us on a short notice, with was a big help to us. We had our own little house to stay, ideally for a couple. We could choose when to start to work. We did a lot of tree work, green work, farm work and a bit of cleaning and cooking. We created a nice connection with the family
