Beschreibung
We are looking for a committed and respectful volunteer with enough energy to work 5 hours a day to help us in our daily lives. We will accompany you to do gardening, painting, cleaning and other tasks are possible according to the needs of the moment and your skills. We live in Nantes in a pretty quiet house with a large garden. I work in Nantes in a supermarket. You can discover Nantes, Pornichet, and even Vannes :). On the leisure side, I do mushroom picking, I am very good at that, what to discover new flavors, running, board games, outings, castle visits, walks, cycling, beaches, fishing on foot, kayaking and cooking are our activities. In addition, I offer to help you improve your French and teach you French cuisine. Who wants to come :)? We have already received a lot of workaways, all of them gave us 5 stars. I live with Cédric.

Oh wow, staying with Philippe makes me wish I could leave one 6 star review a year! Let me explain why..

1. The host - Philipe 7/5. He is a kind and warm and really funny guy. Also incredibly generous. If we go shopping in the supermarket and I want to buy items, he be like “ no you are Workaway you don't spend money. “ He will also say buy what… read more you want I will pay. He is always finding different ways to be the best host possible. Like if friends come who speak French he or his friend Cedrick will always translate what is happening or he will look for special French ice cream or cakes as a special treat. . Weekdays he bring me cycling to the city. And weekends he offer to drive me to the beach or to stay in his other apartment in different city.

2. The work - 5/5
Basic home maintenance and upkeep. Sweeping, painting, washing, weeding, strawberry harvesting and mopping. Making a large mural was my main and really rewarding job! Plus if Phillipe feels you are working too much he will think of way to reward you like bringing you to somewhere very French or play some games for a nice work life balance . I'm a board game enthusiast but he has maybe 40 different games that even I've not seen before. He empowers you as a worker and gives great instructions so after 10 mins I know how to run the place, recycle, dishwashing , washing machine and I know the schedule.

3. The food - 7/5. Some Workaways I'll buy my own treats and snacks just because I have huge appetite and I don’t expect the host to give me that much food but if you last Workaway has not been feeding you, this is the BEST place to be in. I've eaten more cheese and cake here this month than the last 10 years. There is so much food I literally have to say stop. Plus it's delicious also.

4. Location. 5/5 - it's a nice chill place. Quiet but pretty architectural and super cycling friendly. There is cycling paths and drivers actually stop for pedestrians and cyclists which is mind blowing for me. You can cycle to the horse paths and parks or the town or even the beach if you're a hard core cyclist. Intersting architecture everywhere. At least 10 types of chimneys in a 100m radius. I absolutely loved the oil paintings in the museum I walked to. It's an hour walk but nice views. Best 9 euros I’ve ever spent in my life. If you love art the museum is a must see along with the huge chateau.

5- Accommodations 5/5. I’ll say it’s better than half the hotels in south east Asia. It’s good and place is always so clean. Huge toilet for nice hot showers. Views is normal but wifi is great.

So, I stayed with Philippe and Cedric for 3 months. Originally I had planned on staying only one week, so that really says something! I'll give a brief description here, and then more detailed below. They are the two most welcoming people I have ever met; they really really cared about making the experience as good as possible for me and all other… read more workawayers that I met; they went out of their way to make my stay incredible in any way they could; I felt as part of the family and they are very social people so there's always something to do, people to meet and games to be played! If you work hard for them and do your hours, they will treat you like a real friend and you will gain so much from it. Philippe is a great cook and was super accommodating to me being vegan--it was no problem at all and they even stopped eating meat for my first few weeks there before other workawayers arrived! They do like if you participate, considering that you're in their home, eating with them and spending weekends with them. If you want to gain as much as you can from the experience then you're not expected to do more than your hours (4 hours per day, always weekends off) but during that time it's nice to work as if you're being paid for it, because essentially you are gaining way more than you put in with all the food they buy and the trips they take you on. That's not to say that the work is hard, at all. There were simple gardening jobs, painting, cleaning and then slightly less simple jobs like sanding and painting the garage door and shutters etc. which was enjoyable to learn. I enjoyed the work a lot because I could just get into the zone of it and work hard, always knowing that they appreciated it so much. The reason I'm focusing on this point is because some people I worked with didn't do their hours, which is a big shame when Philippe and Cedric give so much.

**I would advise that some older reviews might be a bit misleading, because that's back before they had moved to Nantes.**

So, the detail:
I was welcomed by Philippe at the airport and having read previous reviews I was kind of worried about not speaking any French, as people had said they spent the whole time speaking French. This is definitely true that you can learn and if I had the very basics of French before I arrived, I could have learned a massive amount. They spoke English with me the whole time, unless I wanted to try to speak in French. Cedric is particularly helpful in regard to learning French, taking the time to help whenever he can. I went to 3 different cities in my first day (Nantes, Vannes and Angers) which was pretty cool. I spent the first few days in Angers with Philippe, then the following 2 weeks in Nantes with Cedric. They were very appreciative of the work I did and even offered to try to get me a job at the supermarket that Philippe works at. I wanted to work doing fruit-picking, so I declined the offer and yet they helped me by calling farms and helping me loads in creating a French cv to get a fruit picking job. They then offered to take me to Spain with them for 2 weeks on their holiday with lots of their friends, which was amazing! I can never thank them enough for what they did for me. When we got back to France, I was joined by other workawayers which was fun; from about July onwards there always seemed to be atleast 2 other workawayers. I then accepted the job at the supermarket, which Philippe managed to get me because he puts so much time into every workawayer and he appreciated that I worked hard. I did this alongside working for them and spent a lot more time with Philippe at this point (as he works in Angers); I felt like I had become totally accustomed to living there, as if I was a native.

They took us kayaking, to other cities, for meals out, drinks and pizza, to see their friends and many barbecues, among many other things. The meals were amazing, with wine and beer every night and games afterwards a lot of the time. I got on well with the other workawayers and one I'm actually studying in Edinburgh with, so we're good friends now! In Nantes the house is still in renovation, but it didn't bother me after the first day. It's nice being a part of making the garden into their image of it for the future. I went on lovely walks everyday from the house, as there is a large park and other walks very close by. I could use one of their bikes to go into town and I felt that I had so much freedom there and also structure with the work and the weekends, which were usually planned for. I could talk for days about all the ways Philippe and Cedric were the most perfect hosts anyone could hope for. I absolutely recommend them and I don't think you could possibly find more generous and caring hosts. If anyone who hasn't gotten bored of reading this wants to ask me any questions about my stay or what to expect, feel free to message me!

To Philippe and Cedric: Thank-you so, so much for all the ways you helped me, gave me your time, gave me great meals, introduced me to your family and friends, took me places and treated me as a friend. I am eternally grateful for the whole experience.
