Our first Workaway experience couldn’t have been better!
We arrived in the beginning of November with agreement to ”stay over the winter”. From the very beginning - starting from the first video call we had in April, we felt us welcomed. Camilla and Richard are very warm and friendly people who care how others feel. As Camilla said: ”We want

They spoiled us with few great dinners, christmas tree and other things.
As a basic routine we took care of horses in the mornings, the rest of the day’s work was from Camilla’s wish list - gardening, renovation of furniture, lumbering, general maintenance tasks at the stables, new window for the chateau, maintaining the tennis court for new season… There might not always be definitive list of tasks set, but one may find something that needs to be fixed or seems to be an interesting project. And no matter what the project is, they have the proper tools for it!
But it wasn’t just work, we also had wonderful excursions in the area. Camilla and Richard provided great tips where to go and they were very flexible with the schedules if we planned to take some working days for our adventures and there wasn’t anything that urged us to be available for help. Mutual trust and respect were the key words!
After five wonderful months it’s time to move on, but if the planets are in right position in the future we are extremely happy to come back! Thank you so much Camilla and Richard, and the rest of the gang!
Birgit and Joni are amazing. So nice and easy going. We have had so much fun while never imposing. And of course, they have been extremely helpful with all sort of things. Building windows, fixing the tennis court, gardening, cleaning etc etc. You name it, they do it! If you are lucky enough to have them stay with you CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Mareike och Nick stayed with us for two months and worked wonders. Spring 2024 was rainy and cold, but that didn't stop M and N from tirelessly mowing the grass, cutting down trees, and clearing the garden. M is also incredibly good with the horses and a skilled rider. Calm and confident, able to handle tricky situations and care for sick horses.
… read more M and N are incredibly fun and pleasant to have around. Completely self-sufficient and capable in every way. When we had an emergency, we could leave the entire farm in their hands without any problems. For which we are incredibly grateful.

During our stay, we mostly tackled the grass and weeds (growing like nuts in a very wet early summer), chopped and stacked lots of firewood, and cared for the horses during Camilla’s absence.
We loved the accommodation, which was spacious, cozy and private (plus the excellent internet, which makes it convenient for remote work).

… read more constantly remember the wonderful female dogs Lisa and Rosa and our walks together in the neighborhood. Day-to-day close contact with these wonderful beings gave us a lot and showed us other dimensions of life that are definitely worth it! Also, our canine miss Greys clearly misses her canine friends and happily wags her tail when she meets the "golden retriever" ...-:)
Thus, a number of videos were created daily with humorous pieces of the animal inhabitants of the manor". We were also glad that are able to help with the care of the garden and, in short, with everything that was needed. A fully equipped workshop allows you to make anything you can think of.
We also consider it a great gift to be able to stay at the castle residence, surrounded by history, about which it is possible to learn a lot from Camilla's mouth. History buffs will love this area of the Maine River, as the area is dotted with quaint historic villages. The nearby cities of Laval and Château Gontier ….. and finally, the nearby flea market gives the opportunity to discover rare catches here! (our car was bursting at the seams when we left!)
Camilla and Richard are kind-hearted people from whom you can learn a lot. If you are looking for peace and tranquility in connection with animals and nature, this is the place for you. Bobbi and Derek stayed with us for a couple of months during the fall of 2022. They are extremely efficient and hard working and get things done in absolute no time and then move on to the next project. The number of trees they felled and then cut up for firewood is impressive and will last us several winters. They continuously serviced the
… read more chainsaws and sharpened the chains. They are extremely handy and independent. They noticed themselves that the car needed an oil change and simply did it. They did A LOT of gardening, repaired the water boiler, built some stairs, they cleaned up several barns and work shops and drove many truckloads of garbage to the recycling centre. They were amazing with the horses and dogs. Nothing was a problem. Extremely reliable. On a personal note, Bobbi and Derek are lots of fun. They are great together and are a delight to hang out with. Lots of unbelievable stories from all their adventures. And very interested about everything. If you ever are so lucky to get a chance of hosting Bobbi and Derek, jump at it!

Where to begin....................Wow our stay was everything you could hope for in a Workaway opportunity. Richard and Camilla immediately made us feel welcomed and appreciated. They are down to earth, fun, honest and hardworking people that absolutely set you up with everything you need to be productive and successful. Our skill set was utilized
… read more to the max and we were allowed to set our daily agendas with flexibility without any micro managing. Any tools or safety items needed to perform our tasks were promptly provided.
The Farm house accommodations are comfortable and everything was there for an extended stay, seriously we could live there. Having use of a vehicle was invaluable based on location. We were able to take afternoons and weekends for tourist sightseeing, shopping and running about. The fireplace for us was the highlight with many cozy evenings snuggled in.
Their local and regional knowledge and advice was really appreciated, from travel plans to arrive from Paris to weekend getaways were so very helpful. We shared several meals together and trips to the market but always felt our privacy was respected and vise versa.
The property is stunning and honestly seem out of a fairy tale in the French country side. A very special mention to Lisa and Rosa the Goldens that we fell in love with and were able to get our daily dog lovers fix. Helping a bit with the Horses was a good learning experience and humbling to be part of.
All in all this was our best and most memorable workaway experience......to be continued.......

This was a first Workaway experience, and it met our highest expectations. We’ve spent two months and a half at Camilla and Richard’s beautiful château and the only hard time was when we had to say good bye.

We immediately felt at home, thanks to our hosts’ warmth and the beautiful old farm that workawayers have all for themselves, providing privacy both for hosts and guests.
Having a car at our disposal was extremely useful since there is no public transportation close by.
The area is beautiful, small medieval villages nested in soft rolling hills, mild weather... there are so many points of interests and activities in the vicinity and further away that you will never run out of projects in your free time.
We just left, and we’re already thinking of coming back...

… read more tasks done. Maddie and Carter took on an enourmous project in ovehauling all our fences. This was an endless jobb. Very tough both ridding us of bush that was growing around the poles. But also fixing poles, hammering them deep down again etc. The endless task was finished in time and we now feel so much better when we are away as the horses are much better enclosed and stay were they should be. You would be so lucky to have them!

Our days consisted of cleaning stalls, mowing and "whipper-snipping" the lawns, and a few other projects. We felt like we were completely immersed in the French culture and had good conversation over amazing french food. Richard and Camilla showed us the local markets and other happenings in the area and we never felt like we had nothing to do, there was often fun things planned in the week and Richard and Camilla really made us feel welcome. Johnny really enjoyed playing tennis with Richard and learning from the pro, as well as riding tips from the pro Axeline!! We were very spoilt!! Swimming in the pool in the summer was a big highlight for us and the grounds are well kept and everything had Camillas fantastic eye for design on it. Camilla and Richard are kind, generous, enthusiastic and there was never a dull moment in the three months we were there. They are full of ideas, hard working and have lots of projects on the go. We worked (and laughed a lot) along side Camilla who is a super woman!!! We renovated the basement into a sauna room. We also worked with the horses amongst various other tasks around the property. We got to meet their friends and neighbours who are all great people!
The Chateau and surroundings are absolutely incredible. Waking up every day to feed the horses with darling Ingrid the goat and getting stuck into work around the property was so enjoyable. There are lots of lovely villages close by to explore and the Saturday Laval Markets are great! The private cottage is lovely, comfortable and so cosy with the big fire. Having our own car was a huge bonus too.
We both found it very hard to leave, we could've happily stayed for ever. We now have the best memories, with our stay here being the highlight of our trip.

Tegan knows horses well and is a good rider. She also taught Dom to ride while here. They had no problems handling the chateau with all our animals by themselves. We actually left for a week a few hours after their arrival. This was no problem for Dom and Tegan. While they were very discrete and independent we really wanted to hang out with Tegan and Dom who became part of our family. We were very sorry to see them go and wish they could have stayed for ever! Anybody having the opportunity to get to know Tegan and Dom should jump on it!!!

… read more whom we got to know really well. Both Richard and Camilla have lots of energy, have a positive attitude to life, and are great fun. We learnt a lot about life in France while with Richard and Camilla – including cooking, wine, food and horses. They also helped us in so many ways to set up our long stay in France and with suggestions for exploring locally.
The Chateau is gorgeous. Every time we returned home it was like arriving at a fairytale castle and every morning when we walked up the drive from our lodgings towards the Chateau, it would take our breath away.
Being provided with separate, independent accommodation and a vehicle for our own use was simply amazing.
The hours and days worked were flexible which was greatly appreciated. We worked both independently and alongside Richard and Camilla. The work was varied and interesting. Our hosts were very grateful for everything we did and were never short of thanks.
We feel that Richard and Camilla went above and beyond our expectations in hosting us and we would highly recommend helping out at the place to anyone who is considering it.
Jen and Marcel stayed with us from mid April until mid September. Jen and Marcel are absolute gems. Lots of fun and great people to hang around with. We learned a lot about many things not only about New Zealand but also about our area. This as Jen and Marcel did a lot of exploring and encountered places we were not aware of.

New floor beams, sealing, tiling etc etc. Very difficult and challenging work that they completed in an extremely professional way. It’s not surprising that Marcel has been a professional builder and ran his own building company for years. And Jen is a great assistant to Marcel in this work. They also found time to keep the grouns, pool and horses spick and span. Never a complaint, always a smile on their faces. And lot’s of enthusiasm about the work, our place, the surroundings and people around here. Jen and Marcel made a bunch of friends here and will be greatly missed not only be us… They are welcome back here anytime and you should be only so lucky to have them!

Our accommodations was a restored farmhouse with a fantastic fireplace we used every night and were toasty warm. We filled the fridge with great food from the local grocery store and fresh produce from the Market every week. Don't get me started on the local bakery bread and pastries made fresh daily!! Camilla and Richard invited us to have dinner with them at the Chateau several times and each meal was so delicious and fun. We started with drinks in one of the large sitting rooms in the Chateau with a warm fire going and then moved to the kitchen for a great meal with lively interesting conversation. Richard took us to Market several times and we got to meet and enjoy some of the local people. Everyone was very friendly. This was the most enjoyable workaway experience we have had and I want to thank Camilla and Richard for making our time in France one we will never forget! We loved our morning walks with Ingrid the goat while we fed the horses, and being visited at the cottage by the two lovely but mischievous dogs Lisa and Babe.
We enjoyed spending time with Camilla, Richard and Axeline, they are the perfect hosts, so kind, friendly and easy to have fun with. They total independence was a great benefit as it is so much more enjoyable hosting workawayers that enjoy themselves and appreciate the experience. All their excursions were documented for the benefit of future workawayers.
Matt & Ruth are extremely discreet and never intruded. Not that we would have minded. Ours is not a huge property but still days could go by without hardly seeing them. But when we met up for cocktails, dinner or joint excursions it was a huge pleasure.
Hanging out with Matt & Ruth is always lots of fun. They are very relaxed, fun and interesting. Conversations were fascinating and we always learned something new. We also had the pleasure of getting to know some of there friends and family that came to visit them. The help Matt & Ruth provided us was invaluable. They are completely independent and once a task was explained it was carried out like clockwork and a smile. We could depend on Matt & Ruth 100% and the fact that they seemed to enjoy the tasks so much made it all so great. We left the property in their good hands on many occasions as we could take of on trips fully confident that the property and all its animas were in just as good hands as when we were home. This made our trips and vacations so much more enjoyable. Matt & Ruth truly love all animals and that to is such a benefit when hosting workawayers. the fact that the pets enjoy spending time with the just as much as with us makes a pet owner completely relax. We often had to retrieve our 2 golden retrievers , Lisa and Babe, at the farmhouse in the evenings as they wandered down there to hang out with Matt and Ruth instead of with us. And our goat Ingrid followed Ruth around the property as the most well trained dog. We think Ingrid underwent a slight depression after Ruth left her.

Richard and Camilla are truly the warmest, most kind, generous, interesting, genuine people who are great company and have a great sense of fun - we had a lot of laughs and good times together.
The accommodation is in a very private converted cottage in the grounds of the chateau. It's cosy in the winter with the wood burner and a cool oasis in the summer. It's right in the middle of nature, with amazing views of the stunning French countryside in all directions. There is as much outside space as you want, perfect for relaxing in the sun and alfresco dining!
The tasks were varied and fulfilling and soon became part of our everyday lives. Mainly gardening, groundwork and caring for the wonderful animals on a daily basis. We did some occasional house sitting, kept the prized swimming pool clean, chopped wood in the cooler months and tackled other tasks as they arose. It's a horse lovers paradise! We got to know all the horses with their different personalities, and whilst we're not experienced with horses, we learned so much about them and gained in confidence with caring for them - they are beautiful creatures.
We had close contact with Camilla, who gave clear guidance on the different projects that arose around the properties and grounds. A great communicator and a very special person - always smiling, full of energy and always happy to share her knowledge and skills with us throughout. She was truly an inspiration to us and is amazingly resourceful. Great tractor skills too!
Richard is a busy man, who loves to work hard and play hard! He travels frequently on business and takes it all in his stride. He's a great all-rounder when it comes to country living, and an accomplished and experienced horse man. He also shared his wealth of experience and helped us get to grips with tasks, as well helping us integrate into local French life - visits to local villages and markets. We really appreciated this, and once we began exploring the area, we couldn't stop.
The local area and the nearby towns of Laval and Chateau Gontier offer everything you could need during your stay. One of our favourite pastimes was walking or cycling along stretches of the stunning Mayenne river, along the towpath cycle track with its lovely locks and occasional cafes and restaurants. A quick check of the map showed us that a great many wonderful places lay within an hour's drive of the Chateau, and we loved exploring the region as much as possible. It's just stunning!
After such a wonderful summer there, we found it very difficult to leave not only our fabulous hosts, but their beloved animals also - Babe and Lisa (2 darling dogs, what a pair of characters!) and of course the latest addition to the family - Ingrid the goat. She's a bundle of fun, energy and mischief!

… read more Oysters, have coffee and buy local vegetables. We appreciated that a lot. Also, he introduced us to some locals and took us to a wine tasting. Camilla was wonderful in explaining everything about her beloved horses. We always felt comfortable with the very light and fulfilling work, being mainly brushing and walking horses, looking after their health and of course riding and longing them. Sometimes, there was also some fencing to do. They gave us very helpful advice and we learned a lot more about horses. Laura especially liked the Sunday morning when Richard was riding to the next bakery in the village with her.
They invited us to eat with them in the Chateau, sometimes with friends also, and the food was always great. Apart from that, we got money for shopping or Camilla brought us what we wanted and we cooked in our well-equipped kitchen. On Saturdays and Wednesdays, there is also a local fleamarket where Camilla took us several times. We enjoyed it a lot. We miss the lovely dogs and horses already and the old Gregers, a Falabella horse freely ranging on the property, became our best friend.
Producing the daily amount of firewood needed in our house was a little challange. It was hard for us to get the big, open flat warm especially on cold and windy days. So if you are staying at this host in winter you can enjoy a very quiet life but you should bring warm clothes. For us this was a great experience of a rural lifestyle.

… read more hundreds of years of birds nests packed solid. Its hard to imagine this but basically 3 meters of twigs packed solid to an almost earth like mass. This was a totally voluntary request as it was very hard and heavy work. And dirty. But Kay and Jim got it done in no-time with smiles. They took care of the place while we went for a weeklong trip, managing the estate, horses, dogs and the cat. Giving us regular (but not to regular) reassuring reports making our holiday so much more enjoyable. They are discreet when needed and extremely fun and social when appropriate. We where invited to a lovely curry dinner at the cottage one evening. A first! Very appreciated!!! We can highly recommend Kay and Jim and hope they will be back with us in the future.

We feel like we hit the Workaway lottery coming here! Richard and Camilla were excellent hosts and made us feel welcome from the very start to the very end of our 3 weeks. Bryan had the important task of giving the beloved tractor some extra love and care while we also both repaired the largest fence around the horses. The work was very manageable and the accommodations were superb. We took care of the animals and the property while they traveled for a long weekend but Camilla gave us a complete rundown of everything so we didn’t ever feel overwhelmed. Mariel and Brian stayed with us for a month and it was the best of experiences. Extremely helpful and able. Whatever we asked they did in no time and more than requested. And once we realized that Bryan can fix any type of machine in whatever state of despair it might be, he enthusiastically started taking broken machines apart and putting them back together again. Washing machines, grass cutters an old rusty motorbike and most importantly, our precius tractor. We basically have a new tractor now for a fraction of what it would have cost at the workshop. Mariel and Bryan are also fun to have around and great company. But at the same time discreet and perfectly fine keeping to themselves. This was our first workaway experience and we are so happy, we arrived as workawayers and left as friends.
Camilla and Richard were perfect hosts, kind and generous, they were kind enough to invite us to dinner on the first evening and from that moment on made us feel like one of the family, introducing us to their friends, family and neighbours

The work was fair and reasonable, we helped in the grounds strimming, mowing, pruning and weeding, we cleaned out some of the out buildings and also made some trestle tables, bench seats and painted some outside furniture and made cushion covers, Camilla left us to manage our own time which worked out great for all of us.
The house you stay in is in a secluded part on the property, it is very cosy, comfortable and has a great shower; Camilla fills the cupboards and the fridge with delightful local produce and made sure you had everything you needed, you have your own space and it has everything you need with great views.
I can highly recommend Camilla and Richard as hosts, thank you for a wonderful time.
