My partner and I have a house located near the Mediterranean coast of Costa Daurada in the Province of Tarragona in the Catalonian region of Spain, within the district of El Perelló, with the Ebre Delta near by and on route between Barcelona and Valencia.
Situated within 15 acres (5.5 hecates) of private land, cultivated with olive, carob and almond trees. It is on the edge of a forest with panoramic views of mountains, the Mediterranean and rural scenery. The grounds and surrounding countryside are punctuated with dry-stone walls forming terraces of olive and almond trees, all of which are in the heart of the world class olive oil and honey production district of El Perelló.
We have become recently a bit of an unofficial rescue centre for stray animals. Often have, abandond or lost dogs coming to visit and sometimes stay for shelter, food and water that we supply. We have had 3 dogs at somepoints in the year and we usually have at least 2 cats around the house. And because we do not use chemicals on the land and have natural landscaping there is wide range of birds and wildlife in general close to the house and on the land.
The house is remote with minimal entertainment provided but it is hoped that this is what you like about helping us in this location.
Transport links, by road AP7 motorway (exit Junction 39), locally by the A7 or the N340 and local train station L’Ametlla de Mar.
Sorry NO Olive harvest this November which would have normally taken place within the first three weeks of November 2019, during which we are happy to have help with all stages of the process. The harvest depends of the ripeness of the olives at this time of the year and the number of trees in production.
Looking to Febuary 2020 the primary task will be the pruning of the olive trees. Whither this happens or not depends on the growth of the trees from the previous year. If it goes ahead the pruning involves the cutting out within the trees of the excess previous years growth, dead branches and reducing the height of the trees where needed. In addition to this there will be further clearing of the ground under the olive trees of olive shoots, rosemary, long grass, weeds or other plants with the collection and burning of all of the waste material. This preparation is for the coming years new growth and subsequent harvesting of the olives in November.
All the tools used for the olive tree pruning and ground clearing (hand saw, loppers, small axe, pruning sheers) along with work gloves and overalls are provided. You need to provide good work type boots as the ground and the work are hard on footwear. The burning of the waste material can damage clothing due to sparks, so please take that into account regards choosing clothing to work in under the overalls provided.
There may be a requirement to use a ladder to reach into some of the olive trees but if you are happy to climb trees you are very welcome to do so.
Both the olive harvest and tree pruning involve phycical work and require a certain amount of discipline regards starting the working day as well as following a routine during the process of harvesting or pruning the trees. Also treamwork required for the jobs to go smoothly.
In January - March and November the local temperature is normally very pleasant but can be cool, so if you like to work with a chill in the air (some days very cold, thermals required) it might be the right time for you.
In return for helping with this work (olive tree pruning, olive harvesting) we provide at least 3 meals a day and accommodation while you are involved with the work. And if you help us for 5 consecutive days and are with us for more than a full week or more we take 2 days off from working.
Regards the meals and for the purposes of clarity, there will be a basic uncomplicated continental style breakfast followed by a simple lunch and a hot evening meal. And again to be clear, lunch and evening meal will contain all of main food groups at somepoint: meat (fresh and processed), fish, cheese, eggs, milk, cream, butter and vegetables (fresh and ready cooked). We mention all of this because we are not in the position to deal with dietary requests that disrupt the making of these meals.
The house runs to a routine to keep harmony within the house and especially when we have a full house. And meals and their preperation are done and served at set times and you are very welcome to join in with the preparation and setting up etc as well as other aspects of running the house.
Hope all of this is of interest to you and thank you for taking the time to read this.
