Beschreibung
Hey there! We are a non-profit association that manage a hostel located on the "Via degli Dei", a path between Bologna and Florence. We are located in Monzuno, about 1 hour from Bologna and Florence, in the wonderful setting of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The hostel offers low-cost accomodations in shared dormitories and tents for pilgrims and hikers, as well as shared dinner and breakfast donation based.
The hostel's life is based on eco-sustainability, revitalization of the area by cultural and musical events, and simple and cheap accomodation.

You will learn to manage a hostel and to manage the organisation of musical and cultural events. You'll discover the "new Camino de Santiago" of Italy and you'll have the chance to meet sooo many nice and interesting travellers walking on the Via degli Dei.
You'll also live a common and simple life, sharing your meals and your time with the other people living the hostel. And you'll have the chance to enjoy italian food of course ;)
Arbeit
Volunteers will be part of the commmunity life, helping to keep the spaces clean & tidy, help in the vegetable garden, taking care of our chickes.
They will also help before and during our cultural events, promoting them around, helping us to create them and to manage them

We are currently searching for:
- people with experience in managing vegetable gardens and green spaces. Knowledge of permaculture is a useful plus ;)

Last summer I spent three memorable weeks volunteering at the Acatú hostel, nestled in the Apennines, south of Bologna. Time flew! Keeping the accommodation ship shape and diners happy were key work areas. Working with and befriending my co-volunteers, as well and Lilith and Nico, was a pleasure. Italy, of course, was also a charm.

WorkAway made… read more sense as I had long summer holidays from the day job (in education) in the UK. Things that appealed included Acatú’s location along the Via degli Dei, and the chance to speak some Italian and reconnect with old friends. Having done WA previously, I appreciated the ethos and experience to be gained.

The work centred on the hostel, mainly – doing the change-over after guests had left in the morning and then supporting dining operations in the evenings. There were also some jobs to do in the orchard and occasional errands (e.g. taking the car to deliver flyers, collect bread etc.). While the work was not difficult, per se, the days could be quite long. (As often on WorkAway, volunteer / employee distinction can be grey :). Nonetheless, it was all hands on deck. Lilith was also quite straightforward and organised regarding the rota and allocating days off etc..

As mentioned, it was a pleasure to live and work alongside fellow volunteers, Manon and Martina. Learning that Manon was the eldest of three sisters, helped explain her instinct to lead! Not work-shy, she took on every task with gusto. She also showed a flair for style and baking, and life in general. Martina was also very able and reliable, and personable, albeit sotto voce. That she’s studying to be a teacher is no surprise; she’ll be great! My approach, as ever, was to get to stuck in, and fit in. By its nature, the hostel generated quite a volume of work (e.g. large floors take a large time to clean!). Lilith and Nico were also very much present and active, in a manner that was neither hands-off nor overbearing.

It wasn’t “all work and no play” (or dull Jacks :), however. Lilith and Nico made a real effort to involve us volunteers in social activities. There were trips to a bar / restaurant up in the hills, for pizza, poetry (‘Delores’ famously performed by a local punk poet) and live music (performed by Nico himself, on occasion – he’s super-talented :). We also took time out to attend the local town festival – turbo-folk music, line dancing, the blessing of tractors and more. On my final evening there was a De André concert, which was really quite special. The hostel itself also put on music and arts events which were really cool, even while busy at work.

In addition to the above, on days off I managed to hike the VdD and visit friends near Genova. Even on workdays, moreover, there was time to chill – a coffee / beer at Bar Franco in the village, reading, journal writing, afternoon naps.
