About Us
We’re a friendly, multilingual couple living near the coast in Ostend, and we’re looking for motivated and positive Workawayers to join us. We love good food, travel, and cultural exchange, and our home has become a fun, international meeting place with amazing reviews from past helpers who felt like part of the family!

I had the opportunity to spend a little over three weeks in Oostende with Arianne and Bjorn. Overall, it was a mixed experience with both positive and negative aspects. To give future Workawayers as accurate a picture as possible, I want to share some specific examples from my stay.

The biggest highlight was definitely the location. Oostende is a … read more lovely seaside city with a lot to offer. After work, I often walked down to the beach to relax, whether it was for a swim, an ice cream, or simply to enjoy the view. There are also several interesting museums, and I really enjoyed walking along the Belgian coast. Thanks to Belgium's excellent train network, I also visited Ghent and Bruges several times and could easily have explored even more cities. This was by far my favourite Workaway when it came to location.

I also appreciated several thoughtful gestures from Arianne and Bjorn. I am a big football fan and wanted to watch the World Cup while I was there. Since I did not have access to the necessary TV channels, Arianne kindly shared their account with me so I could watch every match. On one occasion, I also asked if I could start work a little later the following morning because a match finished very late, and she had no problem with that. I really appreciated the flexibility.

They also recommended local events, including a food festival where we met up in the evening and had dinner together. We also had a barbecue one evening, which was another enjoyable opportunity to spend time together.

Another positive aspect of my stay was the other Workawayers, Leo and Nashra. They were wonderful people to live and work with, and I really enjoyed learning about their cultures and spending time together after work.

Unfortunately, there were also several aspects of the stay that I think future volunteers should be aware of.

One issue was the food arrangement. We did not live with Arianne and Bjorn, but in the house we were renovating, so we cooked for ourselves. Arianne asked us to write shopping lists, and during the first part of my stay this system worked very well. However, as time went on, buying groceries became increasingly difficult. Since we were three volunteers plus a housekeeper living in the house, we naturally went through basics such as milk, eggs and bananas quite quickly. We were sometimes told that we already had enough food, even though much of what was left in the fridge consisted of items none of us had requested, such as soy milk and cocomilk. We also occasionally shared our groceries with the hosts when they took items from the fridge, which I personally did not mind. However, it became frustrating to be told that we were eating too much when we were simply asking for basic groceries. Towards the end of my stay, I ended up buying some food myself.

Another issue was the workload. Before arriving, I was informed that I could choose between working 5–6 hours a day for five days or 8 hours a day for four days each week. This meant working up to 30–32 hours per week, which is considerably more than the 25 hours suggested by Workaway. The work itself matched the description perfectly and mainly involved painting walls, ceilings and doors, moving heavy furniture, and helping with renovation projects. Instructions were always clear, and questions were always answered.

However, I also worked beyond the agreed hours several times. Most often this meant working about an hour longer than planned, but on one occasion I spent more than three additional hours helping unload a storage container in Bruges before returning to Oostende to move everything into the house. The extra time was never compensated by shorter working days later in the week. While I accepted this at the time, I think it is something future volunteers should know beforehand.

I also felt that parts of the accommodation and the profile could have been described more accurately. The house we stayed in had not been cleaned before we arrived, and there was dust throughout the rooms. The kitchen was very basic, with no oven, freezer or dishwasher. The Wi-Fi worked well in the living room but was unreliable in the bedrooms. It also was not mentioned on the profile that volunteers would cook and eat separately from the hosts. This is not necessarily a problem, but I think it would be helpful for future volunteers to know in advance.

Communication was probably my biggest challenge during the stay. There were several occasions where I received different instructions from Arianne and Bjorn about what I should be working on. Plans also changed at very short notice. For example, one evening I asked Arianne what I would be doing the following day, and her reply was simply, "surprise." On another morning, I was told to be ready to work at one house, only to be informed shortly afterwards that I should stay behind and paint instead. I found that it required a great deal of flexibility and an ability to adapt quickly.

Overall, I still enjoyed my stay because I got to experience a wonderful city, travel around Belgium, and spend time with great fellow Workawayers. The work itself was exactly the kind of renovation work I had expected, and before I left, Arianne told me they were very satisfied with my work.

My intention with this review is not to discourage people from staying here or to criticize Arianne and Bjorn unfairly. Every Workaway experience is different, and yours may well depend on the project, the accommodation and the timing. I simply want to give future Workawayers an honest picture of my own experience while also providing feedback that may help improve the experience for future volunteers.
