Namaste, my name is Hannah, I'm originally from the UK.
I'm part of a new NGO based in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. We believe that every individual should reach self actualisation and it is our vision to create a social movement whereby people are inspired to become conscious global citizens.
To achieve this, we recognise that a child's education is the key to seeding change for the future. With this in mind we are building a sustainable school in Varanasi where our focus is to fulfill each child's promise of being mindful, responsible and justice orientated global citizens. Yoga, mediation and holistic education will be at the core of our schooling. Construction of the school to commence October 2017.
Along side this, our NGO will play an active part in civic empowerment through social and environmental projects. Projects will include social inclusion through skateboarding workshops and seeding change for the future through planting 1000 trees in this holy city.
We are at the early stages of the project, so please join us as we take our first steps along the journey. Help us to create something amazing for the future.
We have 5 members on the Leadership team of our NGO, currently I am the only member who is based in Varanasi on a permanent basis. Other members of the Leadership team visit Varanasi regularly throughout the year.

This experience will give the workawayer the opportunity to see India in a variety of different lights. As you will be staying in a residential area of Varanasi you will get a taste of what it is like living like a local in one of India's most mystical cities. Also, being only a short distance from the Ghats, you will feel the magical power of the sacred holy Ganaga river and be able to absorb the culture by visiting temples and witnessing the religious rituals. Not only that, with regular visits to the school land you will have the ability to immerse yourself in the village life. With these varying layers you will get a feel for real India.
Upon arrival a free heritage walking tour will be provided so you can become acquainted with the beauty of the city and discover some of its hidden stories and traditions.
A desire to learn Hindi would be beneficial, so that you can communicate with the locals of the village even on a basic level.
As the school is yet to be built, regular visits to the land are made to engage the local children and host workshop classes. At present there are only a handful of children from the community who attend these classes.
We are looking for a volunteer with teaching experience who can commitment to us long term, ideally for a 3 month period however duration of a lesser time will be considered. As the number of students grow, it will be your responsibility to plan lessons to develop the children's English and to host creative workshops. Lessons will be held 3 times a week.
On the other 2 days, this time will be spent adding input to delivering the civic empowerment projects. This could include getting your hands dirty and planting trees, getting creative for fundraising ideas or supporting in social inclusion workshops with the community.
Please keep in mind this project is at the early stages, therefore your direct input will be seeding change for the future. This role is very much working in collaboration with myself, acting as a spearhead to the early chapters of this journey. It's an exciting time to join our NGO and contribute to this social movement as you carve a hopeful future for those who are disadvantaged.
-Teaching experience is essential.
- Ability to commit for 3 months +
- Provide support to development of cvic empowerment projects
**I'm also keen to hear from Skateboarding Enthusiasts**
It is essential for the Workawayer to echo our Values.

Varanasi is the spiritual centre of India and also regarded as the city of Creative Arts. Spending time here will offer any willing individual to deepen their spirituality. It is also the perfect place for those dedicated to practise yoga or learn traditional dance or a classical musical instrument.
For those who like exploring and sight seeing, Varanasi has much to offer. There are a myriad of enchanting temples, a beautiful river to observe the rituals or to enjoy a boat ride and across the river there is a beautiful 17th century Moghul Fort to visit. Puja Ceremonies take place daily at the Ghats. There really is so much to see and discover in Varanasi.
Getting around the city is very easy, all local amenities are within walking distance of the apartment and the famous Ghats are only 10 minutes walk too. The main roads are very busy so it wouldn't be advisable to use a bike unless you are very experienced! all transport to and from the school land is provided.
