    *April '24 Update:

I have now filled the shortlist, sorry. If the situation changes, I will update the calendar. Please don't apply before then!*

Crew needed to live on board (private, single cabin - sorry, no couples), in one of the most beautiful bays in the world, helping to run Montenegro's highest rated boat trip (tourism). Fantastic opportunity to experience the highs and lows of life off-grid and on the water.

Please note: I receive far more applications than there are positions, so I prioritise the over-30's and who are already in the region. If you sparkle and think you are perfect for the opportunity, feel free to contact me and we can go through the interview process and have a video call if all goes well. Please don't exaggerate your abilities, boat life will expose you. I'm not afraid to ask someone to leave if they've been "economical with the truth".

This is a great opportunity to experience a different way of life and working. You would learn something about the pros and cons of "living the dream" and running a small business.

If you bring the Competent Crew syllabus, I can work through that with you and stamp it too - so you can learn the basics of sailing and crewing on a boat that will help you on other adventures in the future.

All your on-board expenses are covered (including drinks in moderation). I have a car so can collect you and help you go off for the weekend mid-visit.

Montenegro is full of adventures and it's cheap - average wage here is €100 per week. So you would have enough spare time to go off white-water rafting, paragliding, hiking, clubbing, etc. for the weekend.

Crew need to board on a Sunday to allow time to orientate - this is essential and the bonus is dependent on arriving on time. There is an airport and bus station within walking distance and I would pick you up. During your stay, ideally you would get off the boat on Saturday and explore the amazing area. Theoretically you could go away on the Friday after work and return on the Sunday afternoon. There is a lot to see and do, we are surrounded by mountains, and it's all very cheap.

In peak periods we work Monday to Friday normally (but not always, you may need to be flexible), with boat prep starting at 0900, guests on board from 1100 to 1600, finish at 1700 with a beer, glass of wine, swim, whatever you like. The work is primarily hosting - helping me with boat cleaning, making a cold picnic for guests during the trip, making some drinks, washing everything up. Plus taking photos, social media posting, steering the boat, keeping watch, and other boaty stuff. MUST have very good English (for safety reasons) and be able to chat to guests when needed, but also know when to give them space too. It's a really nice job and you can take lots of breaks to take the helm and admire the view. It's the best commute in the world.

In the mornings and evenings, there is time to go swimming, snorkelling and so on. Lots of amazing sunsets, moon rises and lying around on teak deck opportunities! On work days you would cook in the evenings so I can do admin, often something light and quick due to the heat if it's high summer. I would wash up. I am not fussy but I am vegetarian so no meat or fish on board please. If you can't manage without meat or fish (or smoking) for two weeks, please don't apply. The duration of the stay is two weeks.

I will ask you for proof of English level if not native speaking, and comprehensive travel insurance (see links on Workaway website). You must be able to swim confidently, and cope with working in the heat, sometimes up to 37 'C in July and August. You need to be fit and healthy and mobile and not too "big" - it's a confined space and an active environment. There is no danger of sea-sickness, the bay is sheltered. Drinking is fine in moderation (one or two after work) but no hangovers on work days, so no drinking after dinner as a rough rule. No smoking, don't ask. No princesses, grumps, angry conservatives or earnest liberals. Moods need to be managed, there's not enough room.

Same rules for me, I believe in equality!

Please note: the job suits people travelling on their own (due to space on the boat) and travelling light (no bikes on board or pets, sorry!). The environment and experience is fantastic but the actual work is domestic, so not suitable for people who haven't done that sort of thing before (most men!). I will ask you for previous experience. Guests on the trips are expecting to be dazzled by their experience, so skipper and crew need to sparkle - please think about this before you contact me. The interview process is multi-stage and we will always have a video call before committing to anything. I will always reply to your message but please don't be disappointed if it doesn't work out, I get many more applicants than I can take on and there are lots of brilliant hosts and other experiences near by.

The boat is a beautiful old ketch, grp but a teak deck. Very stable and safe, lots of room on deck, swimming platform and all safety gear. Crew have their own quarters (forecabin) which is not cramped by boat standards and is private. Generally we anchor every night behind a deserted island in the bay so we are sheltered. From there you can swim, watch sunset with a glass of something, do yoga to the sunrise, watch the moon rise, look out for dolphins, etc.

We have continuous internet, 3G or 4G depending on where we are. This is free but please, no selfie / smartphone zombies, and absolutely phones off when guests are on board.

Workawayers should have several years of positive experience sharing accommodation with others (not family). Co-habiting in harmony is the most important quality when sharing a space, for both of us. Priority therefore will be given to older applicants (30+).

There is a lovely but eccentric dog on board too who is part of the crew. He is very friendly and funny and interesting. If you don't like dogs, then please don't apply. I will ask you about experience owning / caring for dogs.

Finally - me. I am kind, liberal, humanist, decent, positive, active, former teacher, chatty, good sense of humour, respectful of personal space and to women. Please see my reviews. I clash with bullies and alpha males. I am happy to teach you all about boats, sailing, engineering, off-grid technologies, history, the 90's, weather, cricket and living in a parallel (but not virtual) universe for the long term!

Finally, on any boat in the world there is only one skipper. This is universal and for safety reasons - there is much online written by women and for women about this. Personally I believe in equality and consensus and am very good at co-habiting, and you MUST be too. However, if I ask you to do something on board, please do it without fuss or argument. I am happy to explain why afterwards but not always before. I won't ask you to do anything I haven't done myself a thousand times. Living on the sea is fantastic but can also be dangerous and can never be underestimated. There is always something to learn, and experience is all - so at first you might not understand why you need to do something, you just have to do it and ask later! Again, safety is the most important thing. Feel free to ask me about this. Finally, most people don't bother reading this profile to this point so as a test, please mention my dog Bertie when you apply. If you don't, I'll decline you automatically - don't blame me, it's not my fault! Good luck.
