Laurence is an amazing person and was a gift to host in our home. She is kind, hard working, and a tremendously creative and artistic person. She adapted perfectly to the rhythm of island life. They even entrusted me with the care of their beautiful home and their beloved animals—3 goats, 15 chickens, and the most marvelous cat I know—while they took a trip off the island. That trust meant the world to me.
Swans Island itself is a wonder—wild and peaceful all at once, where the weather shifts from sunshine to snow in the blink of an eye. But as breathtaking as the island is, it was the time shared with Ann and River that made it truly magical.
I carry our memories with immense gratitude and love. I’m already looking forward to the day we’ll be together again. Thank you, Ann and River—may God bless you always. I love you dearly.
Mauro & Irene are a spectacular young couple and fabulous workawayers -- energetic, positive, hardworking, fun. They stayed with us on Swan's Island for the month of September and we could not have been more pleased! They helped with all kinds of projects: mending the enclosure for chickens, feeding and managing goats, repairing a goat shelter,
… read more constructing a perimeter around a small flower bed and setting up the barn for winter. While we were out of state visiting family, they kept our home and all the animals in good order and happy. Irene made many delectable Italian dishes and treats for us to enjoy together. We enjoyed telling stories and sharing many laughs and happy times, taking adventures by boat, by car and on foot, practicing English and Italian together. Mauro & Irene are like a part of our family and we are grateful to have made such a special and lasting friendship. Many blessings to you both in your travels!

We shared so many joyful moments, enjoyed fantastic dinners (thanks again Ann for your delicious meal!), and engaged in enriching conversations on a variety of topics. Thanks to them, we met many interesting people who made our experience truly unforgettable! The island where they live is breathtaking, leaving us speechless every day with its stunning landscapes and nature, which made us forget any lack of usual services found on the mainland.
Thanks to Ann and River's generosity, we had the opportunity to explore the entire island and other areas of Maine using their van and boat. The work was always well-balanced, and we could always count on their support. Working with the animals was a lot of fun (even with the terrible Jack!), and we learned so much from the activities that included animals, as well as about American and New England culture.
We are sure that the friendship we built during our month with Ann and River is one we will cherish in the future, and we can’t wait to reciprocate all they have done for us by hosting them in Italy and creating new chapters in our friendship. Ann and River, we love you and look forward to seeing you again.

Taking care of the goats, chickens (and chicks!) on a daily basis was supplemented by limbing and clearing brush by the shore as well as weed-wacking and mowing and other general outdoor jobs.

If you like quiet places, where you can walk and breathe peace, Isla Swan's is the right place. Taking care of 4 sheep and 12 hens and chickens was a very entertaining experience. I highly recommend spending some time with this beautiful family.
Pato is kind hearted and trustworthy and helped us a lot during the 2 1/2 months he stayed on Swan’s Island. When he arrived, he knew minimal English and had no experience doing physical labor on a farm or helping on house projects such as scraping and painting. But he was willing to learn! Ranon became part of the family during his month-long stay with us on Swan's Island. Ranon arrived when we had a house full of friends and fit right in, including flexing with sleeping arrangements for a few days. Ranon has an easy going, amenable personality and got along great with our friends and our other workawayer. Ranon has experience in
… read more carpentry and excellent skills for someone so young. He even traveled with his own tools! He spearheaded a small building project in our garage apartment with Garrett, our other Workawayer; we couldn't be happier with the finished product! Ranon also painted lobster buoys and helped set traps, he worked on repairing our goat fence, built a homemade hay-baler and baled some hay, stacked wood, mowed the lawn. He did some deep sea fishing, including catching some fabulous cod which we enjoyed together, and foraged for mushrooms on a few hikes we did together. Ranon is a great cook and made us an amazing gumbo on one of our last nights together. He also held down our little farm, feeding and caring for goats and chickens while we were away for a long weekend visiting our son in the army. We enjoyed playing games and telling stories in the evenings together around the dinner table. I highly recommend Ranon to all workaway hosts!
