Thank you for reading our profile. We are looking for motivated volunteers who want to make a commitment to our school and our students.

We currently have approximately 130 students, aged from 6 years to adult, who would love to learn English with you. The students follow a curriculum, and basic monthly lesson plans are provided to volunteers to give structure, ensuring continuity for the students. The volunteers are also encouraged to bring own their ideas to the lessons (whilst adhering to the basic lesson plan).

There are young student classes and also adult classes taught at the school.
Some of the younger students will have limited ability, whilst some of the adults can speak and understand English well.
The younger students need to follow the lesson plans (designed by an experienced schoolteacher), closely and with guidance.
The adult classes are more fluid, to allow for their interests and needs, but focus primarily on verbal communication, rather than grammar. The more they practice talking, the better their spoken English will become.

The lessons can be fun for both the students and teachers, but the important thing is for the students to learn!

All volunteers are required to teach English, but we also require help in other ways, such as improving the school (making lesson resources, gardening, painting, decorating, or building), working in our library, or helping with fundraising campaigns.
Teaching experience is not required, but volunteers must be confident in their abilities and able to take charge of their own class from 8 to 20 students. Our lowest levels are taught by Khmer teachers, so volunteers must be able to teach simple grammar as they will be teaching lower intermediate/intermediate students.
MINIMUM VOLUNTEER AGE - 20 YEARS. If you are under 20, but are fully committed to a teaching role, you are encouraged to apply with a letter outlining your experiences with English language. If you speak English as your first language, please state this in your application. It is not essential.
It is preferable for a volunteer to stay for as long as possible. Three weeks is excellent. Please state your availability in your application.

The school has a 'no smoking' policy. This includes e-cigarettes and vapes.

A volunteer will stay in the school grounds in a large Khmer style house, (exclusively for volunteers). It has three bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and a large communal area. There is a balcony...with a hammock!

    ABOUT US:

The school is in Kracheh Province, about 4-5 hours drive north of Phnom Penh. Orussey Village (where the school is) is about 10 minutes from Kratie town and the Mekong River. The school's founder, and director, Mr. Yuth, has lived in this area for most of his life. Over time, he has watched children grow up with little or no English, and therefore, restricted job prospects. He wanted to change this and offer the children a better future. In January 2016, Mr. Yuth opened our school, built a house for volunteers, and started free English classes for underprivileged children in Orussey Village and the surrounding area. Currently, 40% of our students are very poor, and receive free classes. The others pay a little, according to their family's means, to help support the school.

Kratie is a beautiful town in a rural district of Cambodia. There are some great things to see! For example, the freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins can be seen (by kayak) nearby, nearby Sombok mountain with it's spectacular pagoda and resident monkeys, as well as beautiful riverside walking and cycling. The island of Koh Trong is on the Mekong just a few hundred metres from the town of Kratie. Here you can see many pomelo fruit trees as well as other farming. Also there are some interesting bats that frequent the island. At times, it is possible to swim off the island's beaches. The people of Kratie are friendly and welcoming.
In short, this is a beautiful area.

Volunteers are expected to perform 3-4 hours per day, Monday-Friday. weekends are 'free'. There are some fascinating places nearby that can be visited in a weekend, Mondalkiri and Ratanakiri, for example.

Aside from the English school, Mr. Yuth heads an NGO that works closely with vulnerable groups, farmers, women, and children by implementing sustainable projects to improve their lives. This is a long-established organization which has been in operation since 1993. Volunteers might be asked to be involved with work for the NGO as different needs arise. If you have an interest in NGO projects, speak directly with Mr Yuth, who can advise.

    CULTURE:
A stay in Kratie is an opportunity to experience rural Cambodia, as few tourists ever will.

In our village, there are no tourists. The local people are very welcoming, ready with smiles and "hellos", and the local children are always keen to practice their English with foreigners.

You will be living in the community, seeing 'real Cambodia', and learning how the locals really live - visiting the local market, eating local food and interacting with local people.
In this way, you will have the chance to learn about the way of life in this rural area of Cambodia.

    EXPLORING:
During your free time , Kratie is a lovely town to explore!

You can visit the town, take a trip to see the river dolphins, take the ferry to visit Kho Trong Island (and maybe even stay a night there in a home-stay or guest house), spend the day at Kampi resort, visit Phnom Sambok Pagoda and see the monkeys there, and discover the local villages and temples by bike.

More information can be found by googling 'Things to do in Kratie', and 'Mekong Discovery Trail'.

You could even go further afield to see more of northeastern Cambodia...
Visits to Mondulkiri or Ratanakiri provinces are both possible to do as a weekend trip.

    A TYPICAL DAY.
A typical day would involve an hour of school improvement in the morning. This could be gardening, cleaning classrooms and the library, making lesson resources, or helping with fundraising. Lesson planning can be done in the morning or the afternoon. In the late afternoon is when things become busy . The library/games room is open from 4- 5pm and the volunteers are responsible for running this, and engaging the students in simple conversation through play. Children's classes follow on from Library time, and end at 6.15. Adult classes are from 7-8pm. this schedule allows for lots of free time during the day for volunteers to explore the area.

Each volunteer will be required to teach two classes each day (one with children/teenagers, the other with adults), and work in our office , library, garden or on school improvement each day.

Teaching at the home-based school - Levels 1 - 7 for young people 6-18 years, and communication-based classes for adults. Levels 1 and 2 are taught by Khmer teachers. Adult classes are beginner/intermediate, and are held in small groups, usually fewer than 10 students for each teacher, to enable conversation/role play based lessons to work well. Our children's classes are from 5 - 6.15pm from Monday to Friday, after the children have attended State school.
Class sizes for children vary from small groups to 20+ students and may contain a variety of ages, as students study by ability.

Teaching experience is greatly appreciated but if you are new to teaching, don't worry, a good standard of written and spoken English, and an ability to teach simple grammar is what we require. Enthusiasm and a commitment to help the kids are also very important. We need our volunteers to have a 'can do' attitude and to be willing to take charge of their class immediately. All volunteers must be adaptable, as numbers of students, and volunteers, fluctuate throughout the year.

The children's lessons are formal, but can include role-playing, conversation and other ideas you have., depending on the English level of the students and the size of the class.  We do not play games in class.
The students study a different topic each month. Volunteers follow the guidelines in each level's file, and write lesson plans, and results, in the file each day.

We have a library/games room that is used by the children before class each day. There is a good selection of books, games, and art supplies. Volunteer duties in the library include involving the students in art projects, reading stories, playing board games, and generally engaging the children in simple conversation in English. It is also their responsibility to keep it clean and organized.

THE SCHOOL IS A STRICTLY ENFORCED NO SMOKING ENVIRONMENT. SMOKING, INCLUDING E-CIGARETTES AND VAPES, IS NOT PERMITTED IN THE SCHOOL OR SURROUNDING AREA.

We ask our volunteers to help for a minimum of 5 hours per day from Monday to Friday. There's plenty of free time, and weekends are free to explore the area and relax.

In return, we provide accommodation in our purpose built volunteer house located right above the school.
The house has three shared bedrooms, with 2 beds in each- Khmer style, mattresses and mosquito nets.
Shared communal areas include a bathroom, kitchen, and a large sitting area. This is a traditional Khmer style house, with some Western elements added. Plumbing is basic, and there is no hot water. The kitchen has no fridge, as is normal in Cambodia, as electricity is very expensive here so the cost of running one is too high. Ice is available to keep things cool. Volunteers are expected to work together to ensure good upkeep and cleanliness of the volunteer house.

    FOOD:
We will provide 3 Khmer meals a day at a cost of US$ 5.00 per day

    INTERNET:
There is no WIFI at the house!
There are coffee shops and a hotel in the area where you can have free WIFI. For onsite internet, local SIM cards are cheap ($6 for a month, 60gb) and easy to use. The shop selling the SIM card should set it up and you're ready to go!

    GETTING AROUND:
Volunteers have free shared access to bicycles for getting to and from town, and exploring the area. Please note that volunteers are responsible for all upkeep / repairs of bicycles. No locks are provided so you should bring your own, or they can bought cheaply at the market in Kratie.
Alternatively, volunteers can rent their own bicycle in the city for around $10-$15 per month, Motorbikes can be rented for a daily rate. Tuk-tuks are also available in the town, or can be booked through Mr. Yuth.

    GETTING HERE:
Minivans to Kratie leave from Phnom Penh Central Market every morning. Travel time is approximately 5 hours. PP vans cannot be booked in advance but we can give advice on how and where to get them. Vans to and from Siem Reap leave at 6am. Travel time is approximately 7 hours.
From Siem Reap, vans can be booked. Please contact us if you would like to arrange this and further details will be provided.

    CONTACT US:

Please write and let us know what date you would like to come to our School (arrival on the weekend please) and the amount of time ( weeks, months) you would like to stay with us. Please note that there is a probationary period of 1 month for all volunteers wishing to stay for 8 weeks or more.

    MORE INFORMATION:
Please read our wonderful feedback to see what other volunteers thought of their time at the school, and for more information and pictures please contact us.

    PRACTICAL STUFF:
Please remember this is a family home and a school environment - so please, no drugs or excessive alcohol.
Formal clothing is not required for teaching, but shoulders must be covered, and shorts or skirts should be knee length. No hats or caps, or sleeveless or cropped tops, in class please.
Rural Cambodia is conservative, and volunteers will be representing Mr. Yuth in his community, so respectable clothing and behaviour when out in the village will be expected and appreciated.

Also, we don't provide towels so please bring your own.

    HOW ELSE CAN YOU HELP?
Please help us reduce costs by bringing whiteboard markers, and other teaching supplies with you.
Donate. We always need picture books and flashcards for our young learners.
Used electronics, especially laptops and tablets are very much appreciated.
Please consider making a cash donation. However small, it will have a big impact on the lives of these children.

Spread the word - like and share our social media page - Cambodia , leave good feedback for us, and tell your friends and other volunteers about the work we do!
