We are a new monastic school, with a view to offering its young monks and nuns a secular education alongside their traditional ritual studies. The school's main objective is to prepare its students to be useful and productive members of society.
An initial group of 190 monks, ranging from ages 5 to 15, were transferred to the Academy from their monastery in October 2015. While continuing with their traditional Tibetan and ritual studies, they are following the normal curriculum of an English medium school. This represents an intensive introduction to English, which has been ongoing since April 2016.
We are looking for native English speakers with adequate training/experience as ESL teachers - to help them acquire the necessary skills to pursue their studies successfully.
The monks are generally joyous, playful and gregarious. A pleasure to be with, they are always eager to communicate with people from other cultures, and to learn from them. The Academy offers a unique experience to anyone who is interested in becoming acquainted with different cultures, and particularly to Buddhism.
The school lies in beautiful mountain surroundings, with easy access to Dehradun City, some 12 km away. Hindu pilgrimage sites such as Rishikesh and Haridwar are nearby and accessible by bus, while Buddhist sites like Bodh Gaya are further afield but easily reachable by air.
Whilst we deeply appreciate all the offers of help that we have been receiving, we regret that we can only accept volunteers with ESL training and experience, as well as a one-year commitment.
Social interaction is beneficial to both the volunteers and the students, and is very much encouraged.
