Greetings from our lush 22-acre farm in Dakshina Kannada! We’d love to welcome passionate travelers to join us in discovering the joys of organic cacao cultivation and chocolate making.

After a rewarding corporate career in Bangalore, I chose to follow my passion for the land and sustainable living. Today, we craft bean-to-bar chocolate, practice regenerative farming, and welcome volunteers who wish to learn, share, and contribute.

We share our farm with Five friendly dogs (Munchi, Robin, Malli, Sambi, and Shunthi), a gentle cow (Babu) and her calf Chinku and our cat Pilli 🐶🐂🐱.

🌿 Cocoa Season is March to July! 🌿
When it’s cocoa season, most of our work is focused on harvesting, fermenting, drying, and processing cacao. That is a wonderful time to join us, experience the process firsthand, and watch cacao transform into high-quality chocolate!

We work at our farm, there are neighbouring farms where we bring cocoa from so sometimes, we visit those farms. But the work is on our farm.

🔹 Fermentation & Drying

Fermentation takes about 7–10 days, depending on moisture levels. As a volunteer, you’ll check if the beans are ready by cutting a few open and examining their color.

Once fermentation is complete, the beans are washed and then moved to the drying room.

Drying usually takes about 7 days, or longer during the monsoon. The beans need to be turned daily to ensure they dry evenly.

🔹 Bean-to-Bar Chocolate Making 🍫

Once dried, cacao beans are usually sent to chocolatiers — but we always keep some for making chocolate in-house!

As a volunteer, you’ll get hands-on experience in roasting, winnowing, grinding, and tempering the beans into smooth chocolate.

We make 100%, 80%, and 55% varieties, often sweetened with sugar

🔹 Planting New Cocoa Trees

Most of our cacao trees are currently at our friend’s farm and getting wet beans from other local farmers as well, but we’ve also begun planting our very own cacao orchard.

Since cacao trees take about 5 years to mature and another 3 years to yield high-quality beans, we’re investing in the future of our farm’s production.

🌿 A Few Things to Keep in Mind
* The work is physical & repetitive at times and may not be suitable for those with limited physical stamina.
* The monsoon has started, so there may be periods of heavy rain. The weather can also get quite cool at night, so we recommend bringing a light jacket or warm clothes.
* You’ll often get your hands dirty, especially during bean mixing and farm tasks.
* During fermentation, there is a strong natural smell from the cacao beans.
* We can host up to 4 volunteers at a time. Please include the code word "Solmelu" in your message so we know you've read our profile.
* You’ll be surrounded by animals, as our dogs and cats share the common lobby with volunteers.
* As this is a farm close to nature, you may occasionally encounter small wildlife.
* Farm life can be unstructured and messy at times and may not be ideal for those who prefer highly orderly environments.

We are constantly improving our farm’s infrastructure, branding, and digital presence, so your expertise will make a real impact.

⏳ Work Schedule & Expectations

We usually work 5 hours/day for 5 days, with two days off.

Working hours vary depending on the day's tasks and usually start early in the morning (as early as 6:45 AM). During the monsoon, heavy rain may delay or change our schedule, so we ask volunteers to be flexible, as work may start and finish later than usual.

We usually try to give weekends off to all volunteers. However, depending on the number of volunteers and animal care duties, your two days off may fall during the week, with Saturdays and Sundays being regular working days.

🏡 Accommodation & Food

🏡 Accommodation:
Volunteers stay in a shared dormitory with beds and foldable foam mattresses—comfortable but not luxurious—with a separate space for solo female volunteers. We also have tents available. We provide a safe and welcoming environment where you can relax after a fulfilling day on the farm.

🍽️ Meals & Kitchen Access
We provide nutritious vegetarian meals and can accommodate dietary preferences upon request.

A shared kitchen is available for volunteers. We provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which are prepared by our staff. Volunteers are welcome to make tea, coffee, eggs, and toast on their own, but they will need to buy their own eggs, bread, and other ingredients.

Only on Sundays, each volunteer prepares breakfast for themselves. You can use the kitchen groceries. For lunch & dinner, all volunteers cook together.

Our goal is to create a community-driven space where volunteers can enjoy farm life while learning, sharing experiences, and connecting with others.

Ghizlane and Driss stayed with us for nearly three months, and they became an important part of our farm family during their stay. They are both hardworking, reliable, and genuinely caring people who always approached every task with a positive attitude. Whether it was their regular responsibilities or unexpected jobs that came up during the day, … read more they were always ready to help without hesitation.

One of their biggest contributions was taking care of our daily farm routine. Every morning they helped with milking the cow and delivering fresh milk, and they continued doing it every single day—even on their days off. Ghizlane especially developed a wonderful bond with our cows and genuinely enjoyed caring for them. Together, they took responsibility for feeding and watering the animals, as well as cooking rice over a wood fire for both the cows and our dogs, making sure the animals were always well looked after.

They also brought excellent practical skills to the farm. Using cement, they built a beautiful pathway and prepared the base for floor tiles, which greatly improved the appearance of our property. They both have a keen interest in gardening and landscaping, and their work has left a lasting improvement that future volunteers and guests will continue to enjoy.

During cacao season, they were a huge help with harvesting and processing. They worked on breaking cacao pods, collecting fresh beans, and handling other post-harvest tasks. Driss became especially skilled with the sickle and could split cacao pods quickly and efficiently while always working safely.

As a team, Ghizlane and Driss complemented each other perfectly. They communicated well, divided tasks naturally, and always worked together to complete jobs efficiently. They learned new skills very quickly and soon became volunteers we could depend on without needing constant supervision.

Outside of work, they embraced the local culture and community. They regularly visited the weekly farmer's market, joined other volunteers for Yakshagana performances at nearby temples, and happily accepted invitations to local festivals and family functions. Their curiosity and respect for local traditions made them a pleasure to host, and they formed great friendships with the other volunteers.

They left a lasting impact on our farm, not only through their hard work but also through their kindness, positive attitude, and willingness to help wherever needed. We would highly recommend Ghizlane and Driss to any host looking for dedicated, skilled, and trustworthy volunteers. They would be a valuable addition to any project.

When we first arrived, our plan was simple: stay for one month, learn a few things, contribute where we could, and continue our travels. Life, however, had a different plan. One month became three months, … read more and even after all that time, leaving was one of the hardest things we had to do. If our visa had not come to an end, we would have happily stayed longer in this little piece of paradise that captured our hearts from the very beginning.
Looking back on our travels across India, we can say without hesitation that this was the most meaningful, rewarding, and life-changing experience we had in this beautiful country.
Mayoor is an exceptional host and an exceptional human being. Kind, respectful, generous, knowledgeable, and endlessly patient, he created an environment where everyone felt welcome and valued. Some of our favorite moments were the long conversations we shared with him about farming, education, politics, culture, and life itself. We learned so much from his experiences and his perspective on the world.
What made our stay even more special was Mayoor's willingness to share not only his farm but also the incredible farming community around him. He regularly took us to visit neighboring farms, and every trip became an opportunity to learn something new. We visited fascinating places, met inspiring farmers, and discovered different approaches to agriculture and sustainable living. One of our favorite visits was to the pineapple farm. We always looked forward to those trips, not only because they were educational but also because they ended with the freshest and most delicious pineapple juice imaginable. These experiences gave us a deeper appreciation for the land and the people who care for it.
Over three months, we learned more than we ever imagined possible. We followed the entire bean-to-bar chocolate-making process, from harvesting cacao pods and fermenting beans to drying, roasting, and transforming them into beautiful chocolate bars. Watching this process unfold from beginning to end was fascinating and gave us a whole new appreciation for the work behind every piece of chocolate.
One of the projects we are most proud of was building a pathway completely from scratch. We poured our energy, creativity, and hard work into it, and seeing the final result was incredibly rewarding. Knowing that a small part of us will remain on the farm long after we have left fills us with happiness. We left our mark on the farm, but the farm left an even bigger mark on us.
Yet what made this place truly unforgettable was not the work, the projects, or even the beautiful surroundings. It was the people. And above all, it was Mukunth.There are not enough words to describe how much Mukunth means to us. During our stay, he became so much more than the volunteer coordinator. He became family. From the very beginning, he treated us with kindness, patience, and genuine care. Day after day, we worked together, laughed together, shared meals, stories, and countless moments that slowly built a bond we never expected. Somewhere along the way, he stopped feeling like a friend and started feeling like a son. We will forever think of him as our second son. Mukunth taught us many practical skills, but more importantly, he taught us with patience, trust, and encouragement. One of the greatest gifts he gave me was teaching me how to milk a cow. What started as something completely new soon became one of my favorite daily routines. He trusted me with responsibilities that made me feel useful and valued. Every day I cared for Babu and her calf, milked the cow, delivered fresh milk to the neighbors, fed and bathed the animals, and helped care for the six wonderful dogs who brought so much joy to our lives. The trust he placed in me meant more than he will ever know.
One memory will stay in my heart forever. During my first week on the farm, I casually mentioned my birthday. I thought nothing of it afterwards. Two months later, Mukunth appeared with a birthday cake and warm wishes. He had remembered the date all that time and had gone out of his way to get a cake for me. I was deeply touched. In a world where people often forget small details, he remembered. It was such a simple act, but it spoke volumes about the kind of person he is. I will carry that memory with me for the rest of my life.
We also want to express our deepest gratitude to the incredible tribal women who work on the farm. They welcomed us with open hearts and quickly became some of our closest friends. Despite our different languages and backgrounds, we shared endless laughter, jokes, stories, and unforgettable moments together. Their warmth, strength, and joy made every day brighter. Their children brought so much happiness and energy to the farm, and we loved every moment spent with them.
The volunteer community was another beautiful part of this experience. We met wonderful people from all over the world, but some became especially dear to us. Naguesh and Catherine will always hold a special place in our hearts. Their kindness, friendship, and beautiful spirits made our journey even richer.
As our departure date approached, a feeling of sadness slowly settled in. We realized we were not simply leaving a volunteer placement. We were leaving family. We were leaving friends.
We were leaving a place that had become home.
On our last day, it felt as though a piece of our hearts remained behind among the cacao trees, the animals, the pathways we built, the laughter we shared, and the people we came to love.

Thank you, Mukunth, for your friendship, your patience, your generosity, and for becoming family.
Thank you to the amazing women, children, volunteers, and every single person who made this experience so extraordinary.

And although we had to leave because our visa came to an end, one thing is absolutely certain that we will return home to this beautiful farm.

Kevin and Melissa stayed with us for almost two months, and without a doubt, they are among the best volunteers we’ve hosted so far. They are both very social and easygoing, always happy to chat and connect with others. But when it came to work, they were focused, serious, and highly professional. They worked with minimal supervision and … read more consistently showed strong initiative, often taking full responsibility for tasks on their own. They never worked by the clock — they worked until the job was done. Their attitude was inspiring to other volunteers, and they often went beyond working hours, even helping during their days off.

Kevin is a very wise and experienced person who knows how to get things done. He has a strong practical approach and a lot of life experience. He especially enjoyed working with the soil — he transformed a rough patch of land into a productive vegetable garden, where we are now growing tomatoes. He also created additional garden beds for future crops like eggplant and spinach.

One of his biggest contributions was helping us redesign and rebuild our irrigation system across our 7-acre fruit forest. He carefully studied the old system, mapped it out, and planned new irrigation lines for recently planted saplings. He completed most of this work over a few weeks, with support from another volunteer, Marcus. In addition, Kevin also helped us expand our business connections internationally, including reaching out to contacts in the US and arranging meetings for us. He has been not just a dependable volunteer, but also a great friend.

Melissa is an incredibly strong and proactive person who naturally improves any space she is in. She took great care in maintaining cleanliness around the farm, regularly volunteering to clean dorms and common areas. She also took exceptional care of all our animals — feeding them, bathing them, treating fleas, and giving them lots of attention and affection. She built a special bond with our dogs, especially the puppies, even training them with basic commands like sit and lie down.

She played a key role in improving the health of our animals, including helping nurse our dog Robin back to recovery from a skin infection. She also learned how to milk our cow here and quickly became very skilled at it, taking responsibility for it every morning — even on her days off.

Beyond farm work, Melissa also contributed her engineering skills. She designed plans for an improved cacao fermentation setup and assisted in drafting irrigation system layouts with Kevin. She also added creative touches around the farm, including helpful signboards for volunteers. One of her standout contributions was organizing a chocolate tasting event at a café in Mangalore, where around 20 people attended and experienced multiple chocolate brands along with our own. She handled the entire event with great initiative.

Together, Kevin and Melissa were also involved in cacao pod breaking and the fermentation process. They even extended their stay to experience and contribute to the full cycle. They were always exploring the local area, visiting nearby farms, and engaging deeply with the experience.

They were incredibly supportive of other volunteers — offering help, encouragement, and care. Melissa, in particular, became like an older sister figure to many, always looking out for others and making sure no one felt left out.

We would absolutely love to host them again in the future and highly recommend them to any host. Wishing you both a wonderful journey ahead — you truly are amazing people.

The farm is in a really beautiful location, very tranquil and green. Being there during the monsoon was pretty beautiful. Lots of butterflies around, with neon colours and gorgeous patterns. An endless amount of birds, even peacocks roam around the place. While working we got caught in a lot of monsoon rains, which I didn’t mind seeing as, the thunder storms and rainfall were moments to stop, be still and observe.. and honestly we were pretty much dirty and smelling of fermentation all the time, that it gave the illusion of feeling refreshed haha.

The interaction with the local team was beautiful. I loved working with them and not subsiding from any of the physical work. We all worked really hard and it is undoubtedly a team effort. It’s probably helpful to know that after every exhausting work load there’s an absolutely delicious meal from Kamala waiting for you! She’s such a wonderful cook! Don’t underestimate Mayoor in the kitchen either. Make sure he makes you his delicious mango milkshakes! They are the best! The fresh fruit, butter, milk, curd, kimchi, chocolate, all the food there honestly is outrageously good.

Mayoor was great, welcoming, easy-going, hard-working, dedicated to his farm and its progress and interesting to talk to. He’ll take you around places when there is free time. We visited some other farms, which was fun and educational. From other cacao farms to fruit farms and trips to local villages for food, snacks and some beers. While we were there the euro (football) was on, so it was a great way for us to unwind after a hard days work. When me and my partner arrived there were only 4 of us and by the time we left, we were around double that. Hanging out in the evening with everyone was great, we watched movies, played carrom, uno, talked, cooked together too - it was a really great team!

I would definitely go back and I look forward to doing so sometime in the future when Mayoor needs someone to possibly stay long-term to help him out with the production process or with volunteers but I'll definitely be more prepared during monsoon time as one of the biggest downsides was that my work laptop, as well as my partner's work laptop and camera got completely ruined from the extreme wet/dampness of the room we stayed in, which put a really big downer on our stay considering we had to get them fixed and it required quite a large sum of money.

All in all Mayoor, thank you so much for the experience and for all your teachings. I love this place dearly and I’m really thankful, and I look forward to our paths crossing again.

Mayoor is also a foodie and he love to cook his own food. He is also experimenting with fermented food. During my weeklong stay, I got chance to taste traditional Korean side dish kimchi, Pulao, Andhra style bitter gourd mixed with okra curry, Pubba's Mangalore vegitable cutlet, vadapav, spicy potato twister, traditional pasta with cream and mushroom prepared by Italian workawayer, Rajasthani style Kadhi Chawal, Pasta using eggplant and tomatoes, dosa with Italian basil leaves chutney, Palak panner with potatoes and okra added in it, pomelo salad, Bruschetta and much more...

Volunteering Schedule : When I was there, there was no fixed schedule. Sometimes we start volunteering at 6am, sometimes 11am. If you are a digital nomad or into work from home with fixed schedule, talk to the host beforehand. Host is very flexible....

Volunteering Work: Feeding manure to cacao and coconut plants, packing cacao in bags and loading them into truck, cacao transplanting, digging water pipelines, fixed blocked water tap, digging and preparing pits to plant trees etc.

Accommodation : There was a room on first floor for volunteers with attached washroom where you can have cold water shower.

Other Facilities: There was a stable broadband with the speed around 50mbps.

Food: All of the volunteer and host get together and cook food. There was a community kitchen with grocery for cooking. Most of the vegetables used for cooking was grown in the farm. There was no fixed meal timings.

Nearby places to visit : In less than 2km walk from the farm, there is a Durga devi Goddess temple between the river. Very famous among the locals. There they provide 3 times meals for free to the all visitors. Sometimes there will be free traditional theatre, dance organised by temple management anyone can attend it.

More than that, Host took me and other volunteer to the nearby beach and even we have spent half day around Mangalore. In short, I had great time volunteering here and talking with host in different topics and also with his brother and with other workawayers. Best part for me was Munchi (pet dog of the farm). She came to pick me up on the main gate of the farm and on last day, she came upto the main road to say bye❤️
