    Hi Everyone!

My name is Jin and I’m really excited to discover more about our world through travel and cultural exchange! I first heard of WorkAway from my French teacher who really encouraged and inspired my interest in different cultures and languages, and am especially interested in immersing myself in the customs and traditions of others. I also enjoy sharing aspects of my own culture with others – especially over food!

I’m originally from China but moved to the United States when I was young and have been living in LA ever since – I speak both Mandarin and English fluently! Growing up, I read a lot of “Les Aventures de Tintin et Milou” and a bit of “Asterix et Obelix”. With some exposure to French-Belgian BD’s growing up, I really enjoy learning about the French language and culture. I’ve been taking French classes on-and-off for the last couple years, and am hoping to improve it by meeting more native French speakers – with that being said, please bear with me, my French is a piece of work!

I’m a Medical student in Philadelphia, USA! Outside of studying, I enjoy cycling around town, climbing both indoors and outdoors, spending time outdoors, sitting down somewhere to observe my surroundings, cooking, listening to music, and spending time with my family and friends. I’m pretty active as a person and am ready to take on adventures that await :D.

I have traveled to both Europe and Asia before – I worked a summer in Heidelberg, Germany and occasionally visited family in China. I've participated in WorkAway before in France, but I always appreciate tips and suggestions – there’s always something to learn! When traveling, I have found myself the most happy and in awe when I’m far away from the tourist lines and crowded attractions. To me, it’s the people and culture that makes a place special and because of that, I love to try new foods and meet locals where they are.

I'm passionate about learning and sharing languages and culture! I enjoy learning more about French culture and language, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak French for most of my visit to gain more exposure! Of course, I can also converse in English or Chinese if you want to learn more of those languages as well!

  • Que habilidades tienes?

    Education:
I am a Chemistry undergraduate student graduating in May of this year!
I specialize in analytical chemistry – I’m no expert but It’s an interesting subject :)).

Some Random Things I Know How to Do:
    Building model airplanes
    Tinkering/fixing old road bikes

    Occupations:
I have worked a number of jobs since high school. In high school, I worked as a private tutor to both middle and high school level students in subjects including math, science, and English.

    The jobs I currently work:
    1. Climbing Wall Attendant
I make sure patrons at my local climbing wall are climbing safely and properly. I am also belay certified so I can take people on top-rope climbing. Occasionally, I’ll also help with route-setting.
    2. Certified Nursing Assistant
I have been an elderly caretaker for the past three years. As a nursing assistant, I help with all activities of daily living including showers, using the toilet, eating/feeding, and more.
    3. Lab Researcher
Both at the University of Heidelberg and University of Notre Dame, I’ve worked as a Chemistry researcher. I mainly do computational work so while I can handle wet labs, I am not as well versed!

    Languages Spoken: English and Mandarin

    Practical Tasks:
    1. I enjoy cooking for friends and family – spending time over food is just so much better!
    2. I volunteer with a local organization to help fix bikes. I’m not quite proficient, but am handy with fixing things like bikes or occasional simple fixes around the house. If you show me, I’ll be quick to learn.
    3. I’m fairly active and am in good shape – I don’t mind doing physical tasks and am ready to learn if you show me any mechanical or practical tasks that I can help with!
