We're a family of 5 living in a five bedroom home in Palo Alto, Our three kids were born in 2013 and 2014. Generally, we have 2-4 guests visiting and two to three months has become the ideal minimum stay.

The best way to think about living with us is to consider yourself joining both a family and a "mini-community." A guest called staying with us a "family internship," and that rings true as well. Consider yourself more like an aunt or uncle, meaning you'll help out your sibling, but you aren't their au pair. This models a way of being we want our kids to witness.

You'll want to be sure you are in a stage of life where you enjoy having kids around and a desire to hang out with and teach them. However, guests are not responsible for parenting our kids and we are not looking for nannies.

Our guests help us with logistics (food prep), special projects, and supplementary teaching and homeschooling. We've identified some great curriculums and many visitors have learned how to teach young children.

Special projects have included helping build a yurt, a solar heater for a swimming pool, internet research, etc. Teaching projects have included ukulele, various sports, slack line, Rubik's cube, etc.

We've also had guests lead art classes, yoga classes, chess tournaments, improv, dancing, singing, and a lot of hanging out in the garden we're hoping to get started ()!

We try and live as a small community / big family - with daily communal meals which everyone helps set up and clean up. We try to cook 3 times a week on a MWF schedule and stock the fridge with prepared food that can easily be reheated before meals. Weekday meals are generally shared together when possible, though we all play it by ear on weekends.

Outside of what each guests feels is their appropriate communal responsibility (mainly their portion of shopping, food prep and communal space cleaning) people put their 25 hours in via special projects, homeschooling help, after school classes, and additional kitchen help.

Most days, we try and stick to a regular routine, which helps both us and the kids.

    Our schedule looks like this:

    - 7:00 - A guided morning meditation (optional)
    - 7:15 - A short, but regular and intense 10 minute workout (optional)
    - 7:40 - We all come together and read or write quietly in the living room (as the birds chirp)
    - 8:00 - Breakfast together.
    - 9:00 to 12:30 - Homeschooling (we've found good curriculums and usually do 1 on 1 teaching)
    - 12:30 - Lunch together.
    - 1:15 - After lunch sports - soccer, 4 square, basketball, etc.
    - 2:00 to 5:30 - projects, play time, trip to nature, misc.
    - 6:00 - Dinner
    - 7:00 - Games/Misc
    - 8:00pm - Kids go into the bedroom at 8:00pm with lights out at 8:30, freeing up the common areas of the house for the adults.

If this sounds like something you'd like to be part of, please tell us more about yourself, your skills, aspirations, etc.

    Many Thanks!

We're unusual in that we feel so strongly about living in a more communal way. In our last homes in Madrid, and near San Francisco, we regularly had 3-5 people eating meals with us every day - with 5 languages between us. Here, the kitchen table seats 7 or 8. Our family is a mix of Irish American and Northern Thai.

We look for interesting people and think it important to fit the tasks to the person and their skills.

We have a wide range of tasks you can help with - including:

    1) Leading food preparation and cooking. Beyond the cooking and serving rotation we do among all the adults, you can take extra shirts in the kitchen if you wish to, and count it toward your exchange.

    2) Lead/Teach after school programs - on a topic you'd like to share or teach. Music, Art, Dance, Math, etc.

    3) Help with morning (before lunch) homeschooling - we have good curriculums in reading, math, writing, etc.

    4) Help lead sports or physical skill-practices like basketball, soccer, surfing, etc.

We are most appreciative of people who naturally love to lead and teach.

It really depends on who is staying with us at the time, with a first come first choice policy. Most people stay in either of our three guest rooms, with big windows.

We're 2.5 miles via flat bike ride to Stanford University, and closer than that to downtown Palo Alto, about 45 minutes south of San Francisco - which can be reached directly by train. We're 30 minutes from the ocean at Half Moon Bay and 50 minutes from Santa Cruz surfing.

Yes, and for this entire pandemic we've had a tight bubble. We're now all vaccinated, though not our three children - however we are homeschooling until at least the fall so the bubble will remain intact into the summer. Ideally you're on vacation, or your main job is a covid safe one. Many guests work or go to school online.
