Hello everyone. Thank you for taking the time to read our page. We are a family of 5 : My name is Alex (50), my girls are; Ariel (28), Evelyn (8), Elena (6), and Grandma (71). We live in Riverside, California, which is in the southern part of California near Disneyland. I am a full time Professor of Counseling and Guidance at Riverside Community College. My oldest daughter Ariel just moved out on her own and is working on her masters degree and working full time. Grandma is retired, lives with me and is enjoying her retirement as much as possible. We have a cat. She is a long haired alley cat named Penny who is the boss of the house.
We are avid backpack travelers and have traveled to dozens of countries. I myself have been to 127 countries. I also have experience teaching English in China, Honduras, Peru, Argentina, and Colombia. Having traveled to so many countries and met so many wonderful people we have often talked about opening up our home to fellow travelers. We have a small 4 bedroom, 2 bath house and one of the rooms isn't being used at the moment. We thought it would be nice to host like minded travelers.
We are open to all diets, though we do not eat red meat very often. I would say we jump between vegan/pescatarian and eating healthy by American standards.
I have very liberal political, social, and religious views. I'd call myself a humanistic, democratic socialist with progressive views. I have a desire for a world without borders, unified peace, collaboration among all cultures, and acceptance among of all people. If you are diehard religious, our home will jot be a good fit for you.
I try to be as active as possible and spend my weekends going to the beach, riding my bike, working on projects around the house, or just staying in and relaxing. Most of my friends and family live 2-3 hours away so I don't have many visitors. Since I have small children I don't stay out late or go to pubs or bars much. As well, I work Monday thru Friday. During those days I stay home and spend time getting things done around the house.
Since this is a household full of women, except myself of course, I would prefer a female traveler, but depending on the situation I will consider all who contact me. I can accommodate up to two people if you don't mind sharing the room. This is a non-smoking household and I ask that you be a completely non-smoker as well. You are welcome to come and go as you please. Longer term guests will be given a key. I only ask that you tippy toe if you come home late since my girls are still young and have school early in the morning.
Our house is noisy all day long for the most part. Both my girls like to sing, scream, fight, and chase Penny around the house. My girls are also used to having workawayers stay with us. They like getting to know you, play with you, and just being around you. If you’re looking for a private and quiet place to stay, our home is definitely not that place for you.
There isn't much to see or do in Riverside, California. We have a small downtown area with several restaurants, pubs, and bars, but it’s definitely not comparable to L.A. One of the California Missions is in Riverside, but that’s about it. We live really close to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Anaheim, and Angels Stadium, but public transportation to those places is not great.
SOME NONNEGOTIABLE AND VERY IMPORTANT HOUSE RULES TO CONSIDER:
1. We are a family. While you are not obligated to constantly socialize with us, this is a homestay and cultural experience/exchange. It would be nice to get to know you and your experiences/hopes/dreams, as well as your perspective on the world. I especially hope, and ask, that you socialize with my girls. They are young and full of energy. They are always excited to meet new workawayers and will love spending time and playing with you. They will demand your attention and always encroach on your space when they are home. If your boundaries cannot accommodate that then we will not be a good fit for you.
2. Please do not sit in your room with the door closed and locked all day. I’ve had a few workawayers do that and it makes the whole family uncomfortable, especially my little girls.
3. You are welcome to have guests, but please let me know if you would like to invite a guest over. We have school, work, projects, extracurricular activities, and just general family time that makes having guests over inconvenient. Overnight and male guests are not allowed.
4. There is no smoking or drug use of any kind on the property.
5. We are a shoeless family. The use of outdoor shoes in the house is not permitted at anytime.
6. Keep your room and bathroom clean, tidy, and in good repair at all times. This includes washing your clothes, towels, and bedsheets weekly, cleaning your bathroom, sweeping, mopping and dusting. If something breaks, please let me know right away so I can repair it.
7. Clean up after yourself when using the common areas. This includes cleaning up after yourself in the kitchen, living room, breakfast nook, dinning room, laundry room, etc..
8. Pets of any kind will not be allowed.
9. Have the means to cover your expenses. Southern California is a very expensive place to visit.
10. Quiet time typically begins at 9pm. Remember, I have school aged girls in my home and they need their sleep.Tipos de ayuda y oportunidades de aprendizaje

The four main things I am hoping to have help with are:
1. Cleaning and tidying up the house on a daily basis.
2. Help entertaining my daughters.
3. Language acquisition and practice (mainly Spanish, but also French, Italian, German, Russian, and Arabic are my current/main interests)
4. Projects around the house such as gardening, DIY home improvements, etc.
In terms of help with my girls, I am mainly interested in having them tutored in Spanish and anything else you can teach them (Us).
Other things I would love to learn are: new food recipes, yoga, healthy living, fitness, sustainable/renewable living, minimalism, eco friendly living, gardening, and anything else you can teach and/or offer me and my girls.Idiomas
